Dr. Carlton M. Mills, a native of South Caicos, has been a passionate educator in the Turks and Caicos Islands throughout his professional life. He began his teaching career in 1981 as a history teacher at the Majorie Basden High (formerly Pierson High School). He eventually moved up the ranks to Vice Principal in 1988 and Principal in 1990, becoming the first Turks and Caicos Islander to hold that position. He also served as Principal of the Raymond Gardiner High School in North Caicos from 1992-1997 and the University of the West Indies Representative in the Turks & Caicos Islands from 1998 to 2010. Dr Mills also served as Vice Principal of the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College from 1997 – 2007. He was also an adjunct lecturer for Sociology. After the General Election in 2007, he was appointed as Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture. Following the suspension of the country’s constitution by the British Government in 2009, he was appointed by the Governor to serve as a member of the Advisory Council. He holds a Certificate in Teacher Education, Certificates in Social Work and Public Administration (UWI), B.A. History & Sociology (UWI), Dip. In Education (London), Med. In Education (Bristol) and a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of Sheffield. He has written and published several articles on education and on the history of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the local and regional media. He has also presented papers on education at various conferences in the region and in the UK. He is the General Editor of the book A History of the Turks & Caicos Islands (2008). Dr Mills and his wife, Debby-Lee Mills own and operate MILLS Institute, an elementary school in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. Debby-Lee V. Mills is a native of Bottle Creek, North Caicos. She is a teacher by profession and has served in the government schools for 27 years, ten of those years as a principal. She is currently co-owner (with her husband) of a local private elementary school, Mills Institute, located in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. Mrs. Mills has a passion for education management, mentoring young teachers and teaching of Creative Writing. She is an avid reader who also loves to cook, decorate, garden and entertain friends and family. She has a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Leicester, UK. She is married to local historian and educator Dr Carlton Mills. Mrs. Mills has four adult children, one stepdaughter and is the proud grandmother of six. Early medieval England as seen through the lens of comparative and interconnected histories is the subject of this volume. Drawn from a range of disciplines, its chapters examine artistic, archaeological, literary, and historical artifacts, converging around the idea that the period may not only define itself, but is often defined from other perspectives, specifically here by modern scholarship. The first part considers the transmission of material culture across borders, while querying the possibilities and limits of comparative and transnational approaches, taking in the spread of bread wheat, the collapse of the art-historical "decorative" and "functional", and the unknowns about daily life in an early medieval English hall. The volume then moves on to reimagine the permeable boundaries of early medieval England, with perspectives from the Baltic, Byzantium, and the Islamic world, including an examination of Vercelli Homily VII (from John Chrysostom's Greek Homily XXIX), Hārūn ibn Yaḥyā's Arabic descriptions of Barṭīniyah ("Britain"), and an consideration of the Old English Orosius. The final chapters address the construction of and responses to "Anglo-Saxon" narratives, past and present: they look at early medieval England within a Eurasian perspective, the historical origins of racialized Anglo-Saxonism(s), and views from Oceania, comparing Hiberno-Saxon and Anglican Melanesian missions, as well as contemporary reactions to exhibitions of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and Pacific Island cultures. Beginning in the 1960s in California, erstwhile music producer Tony Alamo became interested in authoritarian religion and, along with his charismatic wife, Susan, began gathering followers. By the 1970s, Tony Alamo Christian Ministries had established particularly strong footholds in Arkansas, as well as maintaining outposts in California. The ministry gained a legion of followers, with branches not only in the USA but in places as diverse as Africa and Sri Lanka. Even through their leader’s eventual imprisonment under federal charges (related to transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes), Alamo’s vision survived—and his community survives him today. Whispering in the Daylight: The Children of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and Their Journey to Freedom is based on numerous interviews from group members and, more importantly, on interviews with the children—second and third-generation followers. Author Debby Schriver chronicles how this group was formed, documenting its many abuses and its gradual adoption of cult-like behaviors and practices. Like many cult leaders, Tony Alamo had different faces. The public saw him as a somewhat self-important but harmless music promoter and designer of bedazzling denim jackets. Schriver chronicles firsthand the condemnation, rejection, and torment that the second-generation survivors of Tony Alamo’s abuses experienced. Schriver’s interviews, particularly those with children, illuminate the real horrors of the Alamos’ behavior, ranging from economic exploitation, extreme forced fasts, and beatings, that resulted in permanent injury. Schriver’s extensive research—including interviews with Tony Alamo himself, harrowing visits to Alamo compounds, and witnessing gut-wrenching confrontations between freed children and their unreformed parents—tells the story of a closed group whose origins and history are unlikely ever to be definitively unraveled.
