Traumatic Stress in South Africa deals with the topic of traumatic stress from a number of angles. Traumatic stress, and posttraumatic stress more particularly, has gained international prominence as a condition or disorder that affects people across the globe in the wake of exposure to extreme life events, be these collective or individual. Given the history of political violence in South Africa, extremely high levels of violence against women and children and the prevalence of violent crime, South Africa has the unfortunate distinction of being considered a real life laboratory in which to study traumatic stress. Taking both a historical and contemporary perspective, the book covers the extent of and manner in which traumatic stress manifests, including the way in which exposure to such extremely threatening events impacts on people's meaning and belief systems. Therapeutic and community strategies for addressing and healing the effects of trauma exposure are comprehensively covered, as well as the particular needs of traumatised children and adolescents. Illustrative case material is used to render ideas accessible and engaging. The book also provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of theory and practice in the field of traumatic stress studies, incorporating both international and South African specific findings. The particular value of the text lies in the integration of global and local material and attention to context related challenges, such as how trauma presentation and intervention is coloured by cultural systems and class disparities. The book highlights both psychological and sociopolitical dimensions of traumatic stress.

If you feel stuck with no idea what you should do next, lifestyle celebrity and TV pioneer Debbie Travis's bestseller is for you. Drawing on the lessons she learned in her own leap into a new way of living, along with a multitude of stories, tips and ideas to jumpstart your dreams, Debbie's created an inspiring roadmap for change. And now she is not only living that dream but sharing it with others. Debbie's "commandments" will inspire women (and men) who have lost track of who they are or what they want to be; who are going through the motions of a career that doesn't satisfy them anymore; who are wondering what to do with themselves now that their kids are gone or their marriage is over. On every page, Debbie shares the tools that helped her transform her life. Her common-sense advice, often delivered with her trademark humour, will help motivate anyone who finds themselves standing at a crossroads wondering "What's next for me?

The Mediterranean Diet is lifestyle and pattern of eating that focuses on whole foods, plant-based foods, and healthy fats. It balances the simplicity of a raw food diet with the more complicated parts of reality. It's not a liquid diet or a low-calorie diet, but it offers weight loss and health benefits for those who want to follow it. The Mediterranean Diet is a diet that was designed for people who want to lose weight but also want to feel healthier. The idea behind the diet is simple: eat lots of fruits and vegetables, olive oil, fish, nuts, and legumes. Avoid rice, breads, pastas and sugars. Instead of meat, you should eat poultry or fish. The MedDiet is also high in omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers have found that people who follow this diet have lower blood pressure, a lower risk of heart disease, and better cognitive function. The idea for the Mediterranean Diet came from an area along the Mediterranean Sea. People living there had a lower risk of heart disease and suffered from less chronic illnesses. This area is filled with sea food, fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and olive oil. The most popular version of this diet consists of eating lots of fish and lean meats, nuts, fruits and vegetables, olive oil, beans, and wine in moderation. It's sometimes referred to as the "French Mediterranean Diet" or even the "Cretan Diet," named after Crete which is considered by many as the country where this diet originated from. This book covers ? Breakfast recipes ? Appetizers and snacks ? Main dish ? Vegetables and side dishes ? Soup and stew recipes And much more It's easy to get confused about what the Mediterranean Diet really is. Many people think that it's a low-calorie diet because it contains a lot of fruits and vegetables, but it's not true at all. The fact that "Mediterranean Diet" seems to have different meanings for different people is probably among the reasons why this diet has gained more popularity than before. It's also easy to follow, which makes it a good solution for those who need help maintaining their weight and supporting their health.
The story and WWI reportage of Mary MacLeod Moore, Beatrice Nasmyth, and Elizabeth Montizambert. The three women reported from Britain and France during the First World War, for various Canadian publications. Their articles offer insightful, moving, funny, and compelling observations of a devastating conflict.
This book challenges the dominant intellectual assumptions of mainstream international law scholarship regarding the principle of Sovereign Equality. The animus and scope of this challenge is situated in the context of the decision-making processes in International Governmental Organizations (IGOs) which employ the `one state, one vote' and/or the `weighted voting' rule. Using the theories of Functionalism and Legitimacy to analyze the legal implications and complications of the principal voting mechanisms and voting practices of certain key IGOs vis-à-vis the doctrine of Sovereign Equality, the author establishes that this doctrine has remained far too orthodox for contemporary realities. In this context, she emphasizes the importance of the necessity for functional legitimate decision-making processes in global governance, and, accordingly, advocates the elimination of the anachronistic and non-viable principle of Sovereign Equality from international institutional law. The author also rejects the introduction of any new principle in IGOs - e.g. democratic governance - which will render decision-making even less functional.

This book examines the ways in which German authors have used the child's perspective to present the Third Reich. It considers how children at this time were brought up and educated to accept unquestioningly National Socialist ideology, and thus questions the possibility of a traditional naive perspective on these events. Authors as diverse as Günter Grass, Siegfried Lenz, and Christa Wolf, together with many less well-known writers, have all used this perspective, and this raises the question as to why it is such a popular means of confronting the enormity of the Third Reich. This study asks whether this perspective is an evasive strategy, a means of gaining new insights into the period, or a means of discovering a new language which had not been tainted by Nazism. This raises and addresses issues central to a post-war aesthetic in German writing.
Lifestyle pioneer and bestselling author Debbie Travis is back with a book of ridiculously funny, touching and true stories drawn from her own life and dedicated to everyone in desperate need of a good laugh. A decade ago, Debbie Travis gave up her hectic life as the producer and star of several hit TV shows to move to a 13th-century crumbling farmhouse and vast olive orchard in Tuscany, which she and her husband then turned into the boutique hotel and wellness retreat. That was a big change in direction—and Debbie’s shared the best of what she learned on that journey in two bestselling books full of humane, heartfelt and sensible advice on pursuing your true passion (Design Your Next Chapter) and making room for happiness, health and connection (Joy: Life Lessons from a Tuscan Villa). Now, in Laugh More, Debbie digs down to what really keeps her going, especially when the going gets tough: her talent for telling a good story and sharing a good laugh. Organizing them around the passing of the seasons at the Villa Reniella, Debbie gathers up a brilliant mix of stories from her daily life and from her past—growing up headstrong in a struggling family in northern England (her mum perfected dog-food shepherd’s pie), travelling the world as a model (not so glamorous), becoming one of the first home renovation TV stars (by the seat of her overalls) and encountering the famous and the delightful (especially her wicked and wonderful grandmother, Joyce). Snortingly funny, poignant, inspirational and full of the human foibles Debbie loves so much, Laugh More is a warm and cozy book to curl up with, and even better to read aloud. And since memories are so often ignited by great eating, Debbie has added a bonus: fifteen of her favourite, seasonal recipes.
Stories of ghostly spirits who return to this world to warn of danger, to prophesy, to take revenge, to request proper burial, or to comfort the living fascinated people in ancient times just as they do today. In this innovative, interdisciplinary study, the author combines a modern folkloric perspective with literary analysis of ghost stories from classical antiquity to shed new light on the stories' folk roots. The author begins by examining ancient Greek and Roman beliefs about death and the departed and the various kinds of ghost stories which arose from these beliefs. She then focuses on the longer stories of Plautus, Pliny, and Lucian, which concern haunted houses. Her analysis illuminates the oral and literary transmission and adaptation of folkloric motifs and the development of the ghost story as a literary form. In her concluding chapter, the author also traces the influence of ancient ghost stories on modern ghost story writers, a topic that will interest all readers and scholars of tales of hauntings.
Debbie Rodan adds breadth and depth to the field of literary, cultural and gender studies through a meticulous investigation of notions such as re-presentation, justice and legitimation. She examines their historical and philosophical trajectories as well as their politico-juridical underpinnings through an ambitious and timely recuperation of the Enlightenment projects of rationality and emancipation. The point of departure is a critical engagement with the theoretical work of John Rawls, Jürgen Habermas and Jean-François Lyotard. Rodan claims each can be read as foregrounding diverse ways of constituting identity within the social world. Recognition of other people's identity at the social, cultural and national level is crucial to the possibility of justice. Rodan tests the concepts of justice, legitimation and identity through detailed critical readings/analyses of a range of texts. The range includes the film East is East, a number of auto/biographical narratives as well as the Australian government report, Bringing Them Home, which is concerned with the removal of Aboriginal children from their families. She avoids polarising Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal notions of justice, identity etc. by including texts which raise and problematise questions of ethnicity and gender.

While teacher knowledge is well-researched and conceptualized, parent knowledge remains largely unstudied. In response, this book details Pushor’s conceptualization of parent knowledge, the unique knowledge that arises from the lived experiences of being a parent, knowledge that is relational, bodied and embodied, intuitive, intimate, and uncertain. Drawing from her narrative inquiry into parent knowledge, Pushor shares and unpacks the stories of one participant as a way to provide a close up view of the parent knowledge a First Nations father held and used in living with and educating his children. Twelve teachers and parents then put forward their individual and contextual experiences immersed in explorations and use of parent knowledge, attending to the questions, How can what parents know enhance schooling experiences for children? How can parent knowledge, used alongside teacher knowledge, inform decisions made in schools and enhance curricular programming and outcomes for children? Using the metaphor of maps ... of mapmaking ... of living as mapmakers, this book is a storied account of the new practices in which parents and teachers engaged to enable parent knowledge to guide their work with children. It is an honest and vulnerable account of their journeys. The authors puzzle over the complexities and the successes of their work and the resulting impact on children, parents, and teachers. This book is an invitation to educators and parents to consider how to walk alongside one another, using both teacher and parent knowledge, for the benefit of children’s learning and wellbeing.

But when he meets a beautiful young prostitute he embarks on a liaison that plunges him into a dark world of passion, threatening to destroy everything he has worked for and holds dear. Holidays in the Danger Zone exposes the mundane and everyday interactions between two seemingly opposed worlds: warfare and tourism. Debbie Lisle shows how a tourist sensibility shapes the behavior of soldiers in war—especially the experiences of Western military forces in “exotic” settings. This includes not only R&R but also how battlefields become landscapes of leisure and tourism. She further explores how a military sensibility shapes the development of tourism in the postwar context, from “Dark Tourism” (engaging with displays of conflict and atrocity) to exhibitions of conflict in museums and at memorial sites, as well as advertising, film, journals, guidebooks, blogs, and photography. Focused on how war and tourism reinforce prevailing modes of domination, Holidays in the Danger Zone critically examines the long historical arc of the war–tourism nexus—from nineteenth-century imperialism to World War I and World War II, from the Cold War to globalization and the War on Terror.
This book challenges the very idea of "profound and multiple learning disabilities" (PMLD) itself, and what constitutes appropriate educational provision for children described as having PMLD. It considers the role of ambiguity in articulating the life-worlds of children with PMLD.

A Mediterranean diet has been known to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and makes people healthier in general. In particular, it reduces the incidence of heart attacks by 30-40% and deaths from heart disease by 20%. It may be one reason why people living in the Mediterranean region have longer life expectancies than those living in other parts of the world. It is characterized by a pattern of eating that includes fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, olives and olive oil. Fish and dairy products are eaten in small amounts. Red meat is consumed rarely. The term 'Mediterranean' itself was introduced by Ancel Keys in the 1970s. The original designations were 'Mediterranean Cause', because this diet was being publicized as a preventative for cancer, and 'Mediterranean Life' as it promoted longevity. Over the years, these designations have been associated with many specifics such as "Mediterranean DASH", "MedDiet", and "High Fiber". Moreover, studies have revealed that the Mediterranean diet is also associated with higher cognitive function in older adults. A study published in 2007 by researchers at Harvard University showed that people who closely adhere to a Mediterranean diet (Modified Mediterranean Diet Score, i.e. MDS) have better cognitive function than people who do not adhere to a Med diet. This book covers ? Breakfast recipes ? Appetizers and snacks ? Main dish ? Vegetables and side dishes ? Soup and stew recipes And much more A Mediterranean style diet is one rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes and healthier fats like avocado. This type of diet has been found to lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and much more. The Mediterranean Diet has been in the news extensively and is a subject of discussion on standard news networks. The Mediterranean Diet is often misrepresented as a fad diet, but it has been proven to have remarkable health benefits.
