For armchair travel, or the real thing, there is no better guide than 'America - a guide to the experience.' Reviews of 'America' "The book gives an up to date impression of America often with an emphasis on the slightly off-beat. All aspects of American life are covered, from cowboy country to the burial of the unknown soldier from Vietnam in Washington, from Dallas to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, Mexico Way and Mardi Gras have attention as do the surfing beaches and Daytona speedway. The reader will discover just how diverse the USA is and the book paints a vivid picture of the 'real' America unlike many other travel guides. David Stuart Ryan travelled over 10,000 miles researching this book during three extended tours of America. He is one of America's prize winning poets. The photographs in the book are truly impressive and each is an original that has never before been published. Altogether a most enjoyable book and one which it will be a pleasure to re-read.' A review from 'The Book Exchange" "The two page spreads are well composed, the lighting is good and the pictures interesting." Photographic Society of America Journal "I look forward to reading it." This book was written as a basis for encouragement to those involved in the preaching ministry. It focuses upon the difficulties and blessings in the life of a preachers family, especially when the preacher reaches the age of retirement. Readers will discover the challenges of living ones life as a designated spiritual leader while still dealing with family issues that come as a result of living in a very physical world. Prayer conversations will guide the reader in having a dialogue with God in the midst of the pressures of this fleeting life.
The book is dedicated to all those who understand that the most essential dynamic of combat power is inspirational leadership. It has always been and will always be. The book provides an opportunity to prepare you for that truest test of character, to cross the line between fear and courage, and to deliver up what is most required in those most challenging of times-honor. How best to do that is a decision you must make. How it's been done and what elements are associated with this fundamental leadership responsibility are provided in the following pages. Everything that is done and everything that is not done is either additive to or subtractive from how both the leader and those led will react in combat or stress. Leaders must be able to make decisions under great stress, based on less than perfect information, knowing that the consequences may be significant for their country, crew, and self. Being a part of creating the old Command Leadership School from scratch and being involved in the writing and facilitating of the earlier school were together by far my greatest accomplishment and contribution to my navy. I urge leaders everywhere, military and civilian, to take these lesson topics to heart and become inspirational leaders. Start today! Teach them today! It's important, and it's needed!
It is riveting. Ryan provides us with one of the best accounts of the Raegan-era foreign policy available, dealing with a portion of history that took place in Central America in the Eighties. For future historians of the Cold War, Ryan's book will be a necessary point of reference.' - Bernardo Sepulveda Amor US-Sandinista Diplomatic Relations examines the reasons why agreement was not reached between the United States and Nicaragua between 1979 and 1990. The traditional US hegemonic approach to the region was applied to the Sandinista revolutionary government which the Reagan administration wanted out of power. Washington's responses to the various attempts at finding a diplomatic solution were to block agreement where possible, but concurrently demonstrate support for diplomacy to encourage Congressional support for the ongoing low intensity conflict.
US Foreign Policy in World History is a survey of US foreign relations and its perceived crusade to spread liberty and democracy in the two hundred years since the American Revolution. David Ryan undertakes a systematic and material analysis of US foreign policy, whilst also explaining the policymakers' grand ideas, ideologies and constructs that have shaped US diplomacy. US Foreign Policy explores these arguments by taking a thematic approach structured around central episodes and ideas in the history of US foreign relations and policy making, including: * The Monroe Doctrine, its philisophical goals and impact * Imperialism and expansionism * Decolonization and self-determination * the Cold War * Third World development * the Soviet 'evil empire', the Sandinistas and the 'rogue' regime of Saddam Hussein * the place of goal for economic integration within foreign affairs.

- the land of Australia and islands of Fiji Award-winning poet David Stuart Ryan takes you into the very heart of the Australian land and its presences in a vivid journey that includes over 100 original illustrations. Drawing on his Australian roots - his mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all Australian - the poet produces some new insights into the very nature of the land and its history. Illustrations of the native animals as well as its peoples bring this poetic journey alive and challenging in its depictions of the continent. Here is a land at once very old, peopled by equally ancient peoples, yet also a place where newcomers have poured in, virtually unaware of its history and presence. While they mostly cling to the coastal fringes, there is wonder but also fear to be found in the inner regions of a vast and lucky country that has yet to be fully explored. The relationship between the US and Europe in the 20th century is one of the key considerations in any understanding of international relations/international history during this period. David Ryan first sets the context by looking at the trends and traditions of America’s foreign relations in the 19th century, and then considers the changing nature of America's vision of Europe from 1900 to the present. The book examines America’s response to and involvement in the two World Wars, including the structure of international power after the First World War and American reaction to the rise of Nazi Germany. American/European relations during the Cold War (1945-1970) are discussed, and Ryan considers the contentious debate that America was trying to establish an empire by invitation. Finally, the book looks at the ever-increasing unification of Europe and how this has affected America's role and influence.
The Affair is All' is about the affair of a lifetime, which creeps up uninvited and unintended - and shatters an old way of life forever. Whether this is good or bad only the novel itself can reveal. Set mainly in London, but also including scenes from Copenhagen, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne and New York, the novel weaves a spell of the theater world. Scintillating, excessive, dangerous characters trap you in their dreams and schemes. If you have ever wondered just what the creative atmosphere was like in swinging London then this is it. Theater creative people involve you in their schemes and dreams. Review by Printer's Pie ================= 'Damn impressive.
A chronicle of Adams’s rise from alt-country to rock stardom, featuring stories about the making of the albums Strangers Almanac and Heartbreaker. Before he achieved his dream of being an internationally known rock personality, Ryan Adams had a band in Raleigh, North Carolina. Whiskeytown led the wave of insurgent-country bands that came of age with No Depression magazine in the mid-1990s, and for many people it defined the era. Adams was an irrepressible character, one of the signature personalities of his generation, and as a singer-songwriter he blew people away with a mature talent that belied his youth. David Menconi witnessed most of Whiskeytown’s rocket ride to fame as the music critic for the Raleigh News & Observer, and in Ryan Adams, he tells the inside story of the singer’s remarkable rise from hardscrabble origins to success with Whiskeytown, as well as Adams’s post-Whiskeytown self-reinvention as a solo act. Menconi draws on early interviews with Adams, conversations with people close to him, and Adams’s extensive online postings to capture the creative ferment that produced some of Adams’s best music, including the albums Strangers Almanac and Heartbreaker. He reveals that, from the start, Ryan Adams had a determined sense of purpose and unshakable confidence in his own worth. At the same time, his inability to hold anything back, whether emotions or torrents of songs, often made Adams his own worst enemy, and Menconi recalls the excesses that almost, but never quite, derailed his career. Ryan Adams is a fascinating, multifaceted portrait of the artist as a young man, almost famous and still inventing himself, writing songs in a blaze of passion. “Menconi, a veteran music critic based in Raleigh, North Carolina, had a front row seat for alt-country wunderkind Ryan Adams’ rise to prominence—from an array of local bands, to Whiskeytown, and on to a successful and prolific solo career. Here, Menconi enthusiastically revisits those heady days when the mercurial Adams’ performances were either transcendent or tantrum-filled—the author was there for most of them, and he packs his book with tales of magical performances and utterly desperate train wrecks. . . . This interview- and anecdote-laden exposé of the artist's early career will doubtless find a happy home with Adams fans.” —Publishers Weekly
The author's smooth, inviting tone is at once in-depth and profound while maintaining an air of conversational storytelling that makes it seem as if one is having coffee with the author and listening to his tales in person. The global nature of David Ryan's stories, whether in tales of his travels or in stories of meeting people from far-off places, gives an exotic and adventurous feeling to the book. At the same time, descriptions of the UK have a familiar and comforting sense of home. In each story, the author deftly integrates personal experiences and emotions with wider observations of how the world around us is changing, capturing the aura of a place or moment in time while reflecting on its transience. This truly makes for an enjoyable read. 'Close Encounters takes you on a journey to different places and times, but always returns to the heart of Belfast. David Ryan describes Belfast in a way that creates both nostalgia for the past and comment for the future.' Tony Macauley. Bestselling author of Paperboy, Bread Boy, All Growed Up Now and Little House on the Peace Line. 'Honest, insightful and witty are three words that I would use to describe this book. Close Encounters is a brave and bold set of personal reflections on life that are shaped by the experiences of David Ryan himself and it is peppered throughout with a healthy dose of humour. His telling of these stories is thought-provoking and unapologetic in addressing some of the challenging cultural issues of our time.' Dr Adam Boddison, Chief Executive Officer, nasen. 'Written from a Christian perspective and with customary candour and self-depreciating humour, Close Encounters offers us a further cornucopia of keenly observed experiences, conversations and reflections. As with Brief Encounters these stories help us discover more about a wealth of characters in our richly diverse world, but ultimately in the process help us learn more about ourselves, our attitudes and our beliefs.' Dr Noel Purdy, Stranmillis University College, Belfast
This timely study analyses the ways in which competing ideologies and cultural narratives have influenced the Obama administration's decision-making on Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria, situating these decisions within the broader history of American foreign policy.

Thomas 'Buck' Whaley was one of the greatest adventurers in Irish history. In 1788 he made an extraordinary 10-month journey from Dublin to Jerusalem for a wager of £15,000, equivalent to several million today. Nearly shipwrecked in the Sea of Crete, he almost died of plague in Constantinople, narrowly avoided a pirate attack, was waylaid by bandits, and met an infamous Ottoman governor known as 'the Butcher'. On his return, he became an overnight celebrity before suffering a catastrophic series of gambling losses that exiled him first to continental Europe (where he attempted to rescue Louis XVI from the guillotine) and then to the Isle of Man. When he died aged 34 in 1800 he had squandered an astronomical £400,000 (around 100 million) 'without ever purchasing or acquiring contentment or one hour's true happiness'. In his lifetime, Ireland was about to erupt in rebellion; France was on the brink of bloody revolution; and the Ottoman Empire was creaking at the seams. Whaley lit up this volatile world like a fast-burning candle but retained his ability to recognise the absurdity of his own actions and the world around him. Buck Whaley tells the full story of his remarkable life and adventures for the first time.

Brief Encounters is a very interesting work at a number of levels. The author had the opportunity to work in a nationwide capacity as an Apple Education Trainer for a two-year period between 2013 and 2015. This work involved a lot of travel, with time spent in airports and hotels. Over the period, he was able to undertake several observations that he would then mould to create Brief Encounters, which would then be written when he was travelling. This book has been written when travelling over 50,000 miles! The ten short stories cover a wide range of modern life, and explore a range of themes that are pertinent to Christian life, including mental health, homelessness, unemployment, grief and loss. They provide unique insights that would be difficult to find in any other literary genre. About the Author The majority of David Ryan's professional life has been spent in the field of education, focussing mainly on special educational needs and gifted and talented education. He has published a number of papers and professional titles in these fields. This is David's first adventure into publishing a Christian book and one that has something meaningful to say about modern life and the challenges faced by real people that he encountered during his travels. David lives in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland with his wife Ruth, and three children, Josh (21), Becky (18) and Rachel (14). He now works in the Education Authority in Northern Ireland. "A kaleidoscope of refreshingly honest glimpses into real lives across the length and breadth of the UK. These reflections provide a rich miscellany of the shocking, humorous, poignant and challenging." Dr Noel Purdy, Stranmillis University College, Belfast

An exploration of ancient taboos Taboo is a novel that explores those areas of life generally considered off limits. It is a mystery, a romance, a probe behind convention to look for reality. The bringing to light of what has been previously hidden from ourselves....this is the process at work in Taboo. Horrors, fears, irrational drives come bubbling up to the surface from an ancient past. Taboo contains a dilemma capable of many possible outcomes, what actually transpires will both surprise and enlighten you. This is the third novel by David Stuart Ryan, in many ways it is his most ambitious and mysterious as he plays with both time and place to produce a non linear picture of our lives. The story begins in modern day Amsterdam but quickly reverts to the invading Russian armies killing and raping the civilian German population as the war comes to its apocalyptic conclusion. This becomes a metaphor for the continuing war between man and woman when communications break down and misunderstandings multiply. The novel takes you back through the preceding weeks to see how the fatal confrontation described in the early chapters took place. The heady initial romance is all the more poignant because we already know the outcome. Or do we? The second part of the novel reverts to linear time and we are able to follow the succeeding involvements and realise how these are affected by what has happened in the past. One image of a woman begins to merge into that of another, especially as these romances are conducted in the same Amstersam hotel room. The original protagonists and lovers now meet up again in Germany, but too much has flowed uder the bridge for the meeting to be anything other than climatic. And what of the other lovers on the way, was one of these the true romance of a lifetime? Only you can judge. Taboo sets out the characters and the circumstances, for you to put the jagged broken pieces back together again and form your own picture.

British author and essayist George Orwell shot to fame with two iconic novels: the anti-Stalinist satire Animal Farm and the dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four. A few years after his death in 1950, the CIA bankrolled screen adaptations of both novels as Cold War propaganda. Orwell's depiction of a totalitarian police state captivated the media in the 1980s. Today, mounting anxieties about digital surveillance and globalization have made him a hot property in Hollywood. Drawing on interviews with actors, writers, directors and producers, this book presents the first comprehensive study of Orwell on film and television. Beginning with CBS's 1953 live production of Nineteen Eighty-Four that mirrored the McCarthy witch hunts, the author covers 20 wide-ranging adaptations, documentaries and biopics, including two lost BBC dramatizations from 1965.
