Essay from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 77%, University of Glasgow (Department of Celtic), course: Celtic Civilisation 2B: Celtic Societies in the Modern World, language: English, abstract: These lines, which were presumably written by the Reverend Mr. Kelly of Campbeltown in the early 1830s and which belong to a poem titled “Farewell to My Country”, concisely express many contemporary Highlanders’ experience of the changes within their society - namely as a process of draining a cultural region of its vital powers. How such a perception of the development of one’s own culture could be formed and in how far it was justified will be analysed in this essay. Thus, the cultural changes will be looked at, at first, with regard to the economic situation, secondly, with reference to the development of the Gaelic language and thirdly, focusing on Gaelic literature and traditions. All this will be dealt with within the context of the political changes of the period from 1745 to 1886 affecting the Scottish Gaelic society. Finally, a conclusion will summarise the gained material and attempt a vision of Gaelic society’s future within Scotland.

Bach has remained a figure of continuous fascination and interest to scholars and readers since the original Master Musicians Bach volume's publication in 1983 - even since its revision in 2000, understanding of Bach and his music's historical and cultural context has shifted substantially. Reflecting new biographical information that has only emerged in recent decades, author David Schulenberg contributes to an ongoing scholarly conversation about Bach with clarity and concision. Bach traces the man's emergence as a startlingly original organist and composer, describing his creative evolution, professional career, and family life from contemporary societal and cultural perspectives in early modern Europe. His experiences as student, music director, and teacher are examined alongside the music he produced in each of these roles, including early compositions for keyboard instruments, the great organ and harpsichord works of later years, vocal music, and other famous instrumental works, including the Brandenburg Concertos. Schulenberg also illuminates how Bach incorporated his contemporary environment into his work: he responded to music by other composers, to his audiences and employment conditions, and to developments in poetry, theology, and even the sciences. The author focuses on Bach's evolution as a composer by ultimately recognizing "Bach's world" in the specific cities, courts, and environments within and for which he composed. Dispensing with biographical minutiae and more closely examining the interplay between his life and his music, Bach presents a unique, grounded, and refreshing new framing of a brilliant composer.
From a widely published expert in the field, this major survey reviews two centuries of modernization and examines the dramatic changes in the economies of Eastern Europe. This is a new and comprehensive overview which incorporates fresh research and recent changes to the region to trace this economic history of Eastern Europe within the wider political and ideological context Uniquely taking the broader historical picture into account, David Turnock brings together the entire scope of the modernization process, from the first phase of modern national development in the Balkans and the impact of imperial systems on the area as a whole, to the feeling of 'unfinished business' at the end of the Second World War. He continues up to the present-day state of transition, evaluating the contrasts in the region between the northern and southern states, domestic division between dynamic and backward areas, and the increasing emphasis on the opening up of frontier regions. Wide in scope and including detailed and informative chronologies, this book will prove an invaluable asset to students of European history and economics.

Within the body of Christ, leaders, counselors, and everyone else are telling you what the Bible says concerning being in relationships. Yes, you understand what the Bible says, but when your relationships are at a standstill, you ask yourself the question, “What do I do? How do I apply what the Bible says?” It does not matter what country you are from, your nationality, or your church affiliation, and this is also for those who do not have a church affiliation. This is written for everyone that is involved in relationships. You will be able to read it and walk away knowing that you can take things mentioned throughout this book and apply them to your own life. Whether you are male or female, young or old, there is something for everyone. Single? Desiring a great relationship? Are you in a relationship that is causing deep pain? Gain insight that will prepare you for relationships with nonbelievers and believers. Gain insight that will prepare you for marriage. Gain wisdom and insight for effective communication. Learn techniques to become more pleasing to God. Learn how to restore peace in your life and how to forgive those that are destroying your happiness. Each chapter is designed to deal with everyday common situations. For those whose emotions are running wild with anger, frustration, and hate, chapter 6, “Just Love Them,” is for you. This chapter will make you look deep into your heart and soul. Individuals filled with resentment and unforgiveness, you will learn how to love according to the will of God and let go of tradition. You might even be in an unhealthy relationship or simply not be able to forgive. This book will help you find guidance based on the foundation of Jesus Christ. By faith, shipwrecked lives of men and women, young and old, will be restored. Many believers that are in relationships know how to apply the Word of God when their relationships are at a standstill. However, other believers throughout the world do not know what to do and how to do it according to the Word of God. They do not always live and conduct themselves as a child of God or say the correct things or respond with the right attitude toward those they are in relationships with. They have to hear time after time again from others, “I thought you were a Christian. I thought you were a born-again believer.” This book is for you! To God be all the glory, and I mean all the glory.
