From July 13-26, 1863, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan led a daring group of more than 2,000 men across Southern Ohio. His mission: to distract and divert as many Union troops as possible from the action in Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee. Union troops under the command of Major General Ambrose Burnside gave chase. Although they were ultimately successful, ending Morgan's raid was a much harder job than anyone anticipated. Technology's contribution to economic growth and competitiveness has been the subject of vigorous debate in recent years. This book demonstrates the importance of a historical perspective in understanding the role of technological innovation in the economy. The authors examine key episodes and institutions in the development of the U.S. research system and in the development of the research systems of other industrial economies. The debate over offshoring of production, transfer of technological capabilities, and potential loss of U.S. competitiveness is a long-running one. Economic policy debates have devoted increasing attention to the design and implementation of policies to aid the growth of high-technology firms and industries. In the United States this focus on `technology policy' has been influenced by similar debates and policy experiments in other industrial economies, notably Japan and Western Europe. The domestic U.S. debate over support for technology development and national competitiveness has been hampered by two major conceptual flaws -- the demand for immediate economic results from basic research and considering national technology policies independent of developments in the international economy. This volume addresses these deficiencies in the analysis of technology policy by examining a number of issues faced by managers and public officials in industrial and industrializing economies that are now linked closely through international flows of goods, capital, and technology. The book lays out an analytical framework for the study of national policies towards technology and science. In addition, the book addresses the complex issues raised by interdependence among the public and private institutions governing the creation, commercialization, and adoption of new technology in different national economies. Finally, the book reviews the development of two global high-technology industries: aerospace and semiconductor components.
The accounts of Youth Service in Memphis, Inc. and Youth Service, USA reveal a compelling story of how Episcopal priest, The Reverend Donald Edgar Mowery, led these social service agencies well beyond the confines of campgrounds for underprivileged and troubled youths. His efforts helped to create a template for a national program that enjoyed accolades from the highest levels. Father Don carefully crafted his "spiritual network" which grew to include supporters such as Elvis Presley, who grew up in one of Memphis' housing projects, four U.S. presidents and three Joint Chiefs of Staff, who served at various times on the Board of Directors for Youth Service, USA. From 1963 until 1995, Father Don helped to establish four major youth programs locally and expanded three of them to over 120 military bases across the country. No other civilian organization has been awarded the use of military facilities in this manner. His near half-century old radio talk show, Talk It Out with Father Don, is also commendable. The groundbreaking broadcast hosted guests ranging from Bob Hope, Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godfrey, to local citizens and volunteers. Father Don Mowery has devoted his entire career to inspiring and helping young people reach their life goals. Behind every Youth Service program was his fervent Christian concern for the well-being of all people - the fortunate and the less fortunate. Father Don proved to the nation how youth training and development programs can transform young people into productive and positive citizens.
