By 1976, the National Front had become the fourth largest party in Britain. In a context of national decline, racism and fears that the country was collapsing into social unrest, the Front won 19 per cent of the vote in elections in Leicester and 100,000 votes in London. In response, an anti-fascist campaign was born, which combined mass action to deprive the Front of public platforms with a mass cultural movement. Rock Against Racism brought punk and reggae bands together as a weapon against the right. At Lewisham in August 1977, fighting between the far right and its opponents saw two hundred people arrested and fifty policemen injured. The press urged the state to ban two rival sets of dangerous extremists. But as the papers took sides, so did many others who determined to oppose the Front. Through the Anti-Nazi League hundreds of thousands of people painted out racist graffiti, distributed leaflets and persuaded those around them to vote against the right. This combined movement was one of the biggest mass campaigns that Britain has ever seen. This book tells the story of the National Front and the campaign which stopped it.

During a thirty-year struggle, Arizona reformers called for changes to ward off corporate control of the political system, increase corporate taxation and regulation, and protect and promote the interests of working people. Led by George W.P. Hunt and progressive Democrats, Arizona's brand of Progressivism was heavily influenced by organized labor, third parties, and Socialist activists. As highly powerful railroad and mining corporations retaliated, conflict took place on both political levels and industrial backgrounds, sometimes in violent form. Politics, Labor and the War on Big Business places Arizona's experience in the larger historical discussion of reform activity of the period, considering issues involving the role of government in the economy and the possibility of reform, topics highly relevant to current debates.

David Childress, popular author and star of the History Channel show Ancient Aliens, brings us the amazing story of the so-called Philadelphia Experiment and the many curious events that happened in its aftermath. The Philadelphia Experiment was an event claimed to have been witnessed by an ex-merchant mariner named Carl M. Allen at the United States Navy’s Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on October 28, 1943. Allen described an experiment called Project Rainbow where the US Navy attempted to make a destroyer class ship, the USS Eldridge, disappear and the bizarre results that followed. The story of the “Philadelphia Experiment” originated in late 1955 when Carl M. Allen sent an anonymous package marked “Happy Easter” containing a copy of Morris K. Jessup’s book The Case for the UFO: Unidentified Flying Objects to the US Office of Naval Research. The book was filled with handwritten notes in its margins, written with three different shades of blue ink, appearing to detail a debate among three individuals, only one of whom is given a name: “Jemi.” They commented on Jessup’s ideas about the propulsion for flying saucers, discussed alien races, discussed Project Rainbow and expressed concern that Jessup was too close to discovering their technology. He also sent letters to Jessup. Jessup was then discovered in Florida dead in his car with a hose wired to his exhaust pipe to bring the toxic fumes into the vehicle. It was ruled a suicide. Was Jessup murdered as many people believe? Was he part of Project Rainbow—an effort to teleport a battleship through time and space? Did the Defense Industrial Security Command (DISC), headed by Wernher von Braun, have something to do with his death? Why did the US Navy want a special annotated edition of Jessup’s book published called the Varo Edition?

Both men died in office, both men were humanitarians. Kirk also worked to move the Labour Party away from its cloth-cap heritage to embrace a much broader electoral compass, for it to become, in his words, ‘the natural party of New Zealand’. Prime Minister of New Zealand between November 1972 and August 1974, Kirk's childhood was blighted with poverty, yet he thrived. He moved into a succession of manual trades, before booming into local body politics. His political rise was rapid, from mayor of Kaiapoi at the age of 30 to leader of the Labour Party within a few years. This book examines Kirk’s political leadership; his successes, especially his stunning performances on the international stage, but also his later difficulties when the country’s economy was rocked by international oil shocks. He deferred the 1973 Springbok tour and sent warships into the French nuclear testing zone near Mururoa Atoll, his government set up ohu and the established the DPB. He was New Zealand’s first truly regionalist Prime Minister, drawing New Zealand closer to Asia and the Pacific, as the ties to ‘mother Britain’ slowly loosened. This landmark book takes the full measure of the remarkable New Zealander who was our last working-class Prime Minister.

Though only an average goalkeeper who never made it as a player, he lived the football dream when he went on to manage Rangers twice, winning a whole host of trophies, including two Trebles in three seasons in the mid-seventies. But the road to the top was a tough one for big Jock, including a spell as a jungle fighter with the King's Own Scottish Borderers in war-torn Malaya, and in his fifties he was struck down by Parkinson's disease. In the end, the strain proved too much even for Wallace and he died of a heart attack aged only sixty-two. In this fascinating biography, David Leggat, one of the few journalists who was close to Big Jock, tells his incredible story.

Although it is true that tackling the task of developing a new text on logistics and distribution channel management focuses less on schools of philosophical and social analysis and more on the calculus of managing sales campaigns, inventory replenishment, and income statements, the goal of the management scientist, like the historian, is to merge the facts and figures of the discipline with today's organizational, cultural, and economic realities.
