Pupils and Guides Experiencing Heritage

The study explores the meaning-making of cultural heritage in school field trips to five sites in the region Östergötland in Sweden. It treats the materiality of the place and experiences of the guides and the pupils, obtained in school as well as in other contexts, as meaning-making resources during the site visits. It emphasises that sites should be seen as processes, open to interpretations and reinterpretations. The visitor is steered by expectations and common values as well as by the ways in which the heritage site is displayed and presented. In the present study, both adults (guides) and children (pupils) are defined as visitors. The authors draw on theories from history education research and from heritage studies when interpreting how pupils encounter heritage sites, they underline the centrality of 'the flesh and embodied agency' in the experience of sites. The current second edition has integrated a large set of new data that have been published in numerous scientifc studies and meta-analyses over the past few years. Unfortunately, the harmful sequelae of tobacco smoking are played down by the ind- try and politicians in many industrialized countries. However, about 800,000 people/year in the EU die from the immediate consequences of smoking. The particularly insidious feature of tobacco consumption is that smoking-attributable harmful effects on health do not generally become apparent until three or four decades after smoking initiation. Although some positive changes in the legislative handling of tobacco have appeared in the past fve years, we still need to form a pact, sealed by politicians, the medical prof- sionals, teachers and the media, to target the problem across nations. In this respect, a minority of countries, including the US and the UK, have given positive examples. There are four areas that need to be improved in future: (1) strict bans on tobacco adv- tisement on a global level, (2) better measures to protect against side-stream (passive) smoke exposure, (3) establishment of prevention programs, especially for children and (4) tre- ment of tobacco addiction.

This chapter is written on the premise the neurologist who will take on a new case of epilepsy or will have behavioral problems arise in an old case. “behavioral problems” is preferred to “psychiatric disorders” because the behavior is described by the parents and can be evident to the neurologist. All “behavior” is organized in the brain and can be dysfunctional if cerebral function is impaired by lesions, by genetic aberrations, or by medications. Epilepsy is also liable to give rise to prejudicial responses in all concerned. A detailed history of the family unit is essential from the start. The best possible solution for the child will have to be “negotiated,” rather than prescribed. Psychopathology also arises from “everyday life”; from the fact of chronic illness; and from alienation. These aspects are explored in detail. Mental handicap, specific learning difficulties, ADHD, and autism are frequently specifically associated with epilepsy.
