This book comprises ten essays on Shakespearean drama, the majority of which focus on the problem of language and more particularly on issues pertaining to names and their meanings. Four of these essays deal specifically with Romeo and Juliet, and examine the work in different sets of terms: as a reply to the aspersions against Shakespeare contained in Greene's Groatsworth of Wit, as a representative site for a kind of archaeology of meaning, as an experiment in the poetics of identity, and as a meditation on the interrelation between rival conceptions of time. Other works subjected to extended analyses in independent essays are Richard II, Julius Caesar and Macbeth, all of which are interpreted as tragedies of language in which the paradoxes inherent in names and naming are enacted in the personal dilemmas of the protagonists. The final two essays in the volume, comparative rather than exegetical in approach, explore the intricate web of allusion linking The Tempest with Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and Jonson's The Alchemist, and consider the contribution that all three plays make to the Renaissance exploration of the role played by art and knowledge in human life.
David Lucking sees Shakespeare’s plays as negotiating tensions between a number of alternative, and sometimes mutually antagonistic perspectives. Some of these perspectives are associated with particular languages, cultures and texts, while others involve philosophical issues such as the nature of personal ontology and distinctions between reality and dream, being and nothingness. In elaborating his insights Lucking draws extensive comparisons with Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, and between Sophocles’ Theban plays and King Lear, and he also pays close attention to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Henry V, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and Antony and Cleopatra. Etymologically speaking, the words “know” and “narrate” share a common ancestry.Making Sense in Shakespeare examines some of the ways in which this distant kinship comes into play in Shakespearean drama. The argument of the book is that at a time in European cultural history in which the problem of knowledge was a matter of intensifying philosophical concern, Shakespeare too was in his own way exploring the possibilities and shortcomings of the various interpretative models that can be applied to experience so as to make it intelligible. While modes of understanding based upon such notions as those of naturalistic causality or rational human agency are shown to be inadequate in Shakespeare's plays, his characters often impart form and significance to their experience through what are essentially narrative means, projecting stories onto events in order to make sense of them and to direct their activity accordingly. Narrative thus plays a crucial role in the construction of meaning in Shakespeare's plays, although at the same time, as the author emphasizes, his works are no less concerned to illustrate the perils inherent in the narrativizing strategies deployed by their protagonists which often render them self-defeating and even destructive in the end.
My reason for writing this book was to have something to do after I got fired from C.W. Post. It was one in a long line of failed jobs over the years. The theme of luck grew out of the fact that through all the job losses there was Millie, my wife, and how having her in my life was a stroke of luck. All the things that happen in your life, good and bad, have a tinge of luck attached to them. By putting things into perspective I was able to cope with what was going on in my life and make peace with it. Ultimately this book is about luck; what it is and how it affects the way one handles life. I was able pour my feelings out and express what I was going through each and every day I was out of work. Writing is a good way to reflect on your life and to examine what role you have in how your life is going. I hope you find it funny as well as poignant and maybe you'll find some good luck in your life after reading it.
The first New Variorum edition of Coriolanus, by Horace Howard Furness, Jr., was published in 1928. The present edition follows Furness's but does not replace it because frequently the more recent scholarship and criticism recorded here could be accommodated only by reducing Furness's fuller treatment of earlier material. The reader who finds this edition useful is urged to consult Furness's as well to obtain a fuller account on many subjects. Niels Herold wrote the section on Music and Sound Effects, and Sylvia Bryant and Ian Aspinall translated German criticism. Megan-Marie Johnson collaborated with me on the Plan of the Work, on the collations necessary to compile the Textual Notes, and on the Commentary.
