Finally, it describes the author's efforts at preserving environmental and historical resources in Southeast Massachusetts. Throughout, the book recounts and acknowledges the important roles of teachers, colleagues, friends and family in enriching the author's fortunate life.

After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, David Lusk lived the greater part of his life with African-Americans, and he found it almost impossible to communicate with them. They simply didn’t want to communicate with White people. He gave up in 1975 when a Black neighbor threatened to kill him over a misunderstanding. David witnessed the economic collapse of southern Dallas in the 1980s due to White Flight; during which the City of Dallas became the Crime Capital of the United States. He then saw most of the city transformed by Black Emergence and White Flight as black people merged into other sectors of the city. David saw the very core of Dallas change by the year 2000 because of the Civil Rights Act! He then saw the rebirth of the southern sector during the first two decades of the 21st century as developers returned to south Dallas. They had no place else to go because the rest of the city had been developed! During the early 21st century, Black people who controlled an airport harassed David with aircraft for 20 years because he was a White person jogging in a Black neighborhood. Dallas Police participated in this racial persecution, and the FBI eventually had to step in to stop the police involvement. This unbelievable story is told in Invasion of the Roach People, which David wrote for the benefit of future generations of Whites and Blacks. The future begs for cohesiveness between Whites and Blacks, but can it ever happen?

The book makes clear that we have the ability to shape our racial landscape--to reconstruct, even if not perfectly, the texture of our relationships. There is an assessment of the complexity confronting blacks and whites alike as they struggle to recognize and define the racial motivations that may or may not be present in a thought, a word, a deed. The book does not prescribe, but it documents the silences that prevail, the listening that doesn't happen, the conversations that don't take place. It looks at relations between minorities, including blacks and Jews, and blacks and Koreans. It explores the human dimensions of affirmative action, the intricate contacts and misunderstandings across racial lines among coworkers and neighbors. It is unstinting in its criticism of our society's failure to come to grips with bigotry; but it is also, happily, crowded with black people and white people who struggle in their daily lives to do just that. A remarkable book that will stimulate each of us to reexamine and better understand our own deepest attitudes in regard to race in America.

Christians do not love Jesus enough! Indeed on a scale of 1 to 10, the average Christian's love for Him scores no more that 10. This is the startling message of Lloyd David Elcock's first volume of a series of scriptural expositions that he proposes to publish under the rubric: What the Gentiles Have done to Christianity. The foundation upon which he has built this series includes the following three cornerstones: "Biblical Christianity" can accurately and justifiably also be called "Jewish Christianity". After the control and direction of Biblical/Jewish Christianity was passed from Jewish to Gentile hands at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, the Gentiles comprehensively deformed it, and 1200 years later, partially reformed it. The salvage and recovery of Biblical/Jewish Christianity, begun five hundred years ago by Luther, Calvin and the other Gentile Protestant Reformers, is only fifty percent completed; in particular, a number of the most fundamental doctrines of Biblical/Jewish Christianity are yet to be recovered, and their absence from today's Evangelical Church is the sole and single reason for the widespread carnality, and stunted spiritual growth that characterizes the lifestyle of the overwhelmingly vast majority of born again Christians everywhere in the western world. In this first volume, the author puts forward the view that one of those as yet unretrieved fundamental doctrines is the major key to the Spirit filled life of love, faith and power that is the ultimate goal of both Biblical Christianity and Gentile Evangelical Christianity. That key, he says, is hidden (in plain view, out in the open) in the pages of the fourteenth chapter of the Gospel according to the apostle John.

David went on a two-year mission trip to Brazil like his father before him, and Mike stayed in the States, finding himself in and out of prison. When David returned, in the middle of the still-unnamed opioid epidemic, things had irrevocably changed, and in 2021, Mike unexpectedly died in prison. Martinez writes with a serrated edge, as viscerally felt as an exposed nerve, and transforms from a stoic boy constantly seeking escape to a vulnerable man eager to contextualize the legacies and losses that have shaped his life. With a wild, ragged velocity—flipping and soaring like a pro skater—Martinez defies a linear telling of his life and tackles topics from abuse and racism to writing and capturing the meaning of the specific nostalgia of saudade. Hash III–right down to the smartly pressed suit, dashing necktie, and sensible horn-rims. As luck (or some darker design?) would have it, no one witnesses this astonishing feat of shapeshifting. And in a serendipitous twist of fate (luck’s fickle cousin), the genuine Bob T. Hash III–having apparently absconded to Acapulco with his charming assistant–is conveniently AWOL. Thus the coast is clear for the puzzled (but not entirely displeased) parrot to exit the wings and do what parrots do best: imitate their owners–a charade the avian impostor rises to effortlessly, slipping with nary a misstep into the shoes, the career, and even the marital bed (!) of Bob T. Hash III. But when, having taken the reins as CEO of the Acme International Institute of Languages, he stumbles upon a heinous act of corporate (and grammatical) sabotage, Comenius begins to suspect he’s being stalked–by himself–and it suddenly looks as if his best laid plans might just be heading south. Think Kafka, inverted, upended, and gleefully reverse-engineered by Monty Python. Think Borges, deconstructed by Lewis Carroll and reassembled with spare parts scavenged from The New Yorker and MAD. Analogies abound, yet nothing can truly compare to the comic broadsides, dazzling wordplay, cheeky wit, and wholly original flights of imagination working their magic in David Deans’s inventive new novel.
