Contentious Spirits explores the role of religion in Korean American history during the first half of the twentieth century in Hawai'i and California. Historian David K. Yoo argues that religion is the most important aspect of this group's experience because its structures and sensibilities address the full range of human experience. Framing the book are three relational themes: religion & race, migration & exile, and colonialism & independence. In an engaging narrative, Yoo documents the ways in which religion shaped the racialization of Korean in the United States, shows how religion fueled the transnational migration of Korean Americans and its connections to their exile, and details a story in which religion intertwined with the visions and activities of independence even as it was also entangled in colonialism. Contentious Spirits explores the central role of religion, particularly Protestant Christianity, in Korean American history during the first half of the twentieth century in Hawai'i and California.
Performing experiments for system identification of continuously operated plants might be restricted as it can impact negatively normal production. In such cases, using historical logged data can become an attractive alternative for system identification. However, operating points are rarely changed and parameter estimation methods can suffer numerical problems. Three main drawbacks of current approaches in this research area can be discussed. Firstly, detection tests are not adapted for dynamical systems. Secondly, methods to define upper interval bounds are not robust to colored noise that is more likely to be found in real applications. Thirdly, model estimation with the retrieved data is not supported and the performance of the method cannot be assessed. In the method proposed in this work, called data selection for system identification (DS4SID), previous drawbacks are addressed and robust tests are designed and implemented. The performance of DS4SID is evaluated in a simulated and laboratory multivariate processes. A process unit of the lab-scale factory “μPlant” is used as industryoriented case study. Models estimated with selected data are shown to have similar performance than estimates with the entire data set.

The widespread diffusion of digital, connected objects such as smartphones or tablets as well as the increasing integration of computing and connectivity capabilities into everyday artifacts like TVs and cars have significantly changed individual behavior in recent decades: it has become the norm to interact with technology and to be connected with online resources regardless of time and place. Social interactions have increasingly become intertwined with technology, making it almost impossible to fully participate in everyday life activities without IT. As a final example, with the integration of network connectivity, digital technologies, products, and services are not used in isolation anymore, but working together as assemblages, thereby expanding the range of what they and their users can do. Overall, we have witnessed that IT has become deeply socially embedded in everyday life and routines. Understanding individual behavior has a long tradition in information systems research. However, given the fundamental changes in recent years related to technology use, it is questionable whether traditional models and theories are still applicable in the digital age. The goal of this dissertation is to address respective shortcomings. As a first step, a comprehensive review of the literature on digital transformation is performed for a better understanding of this phenomenon surrounding the changes we have witnessed regarding individual behavior. Afterwards, new concepts to explain and measure individual behavior and expectations related to connected objects are developed and examined. Furthermore, as the topic of connected objects is closely connected to the concept of personalization, a design study is performed that 1) provides an artifact to handle the efficiency-personalization trade-off in the provision of firm offerings and 2) illustrates how personalization influences the user perceptions of respective products and services. Based on the findings, a framework for the study of connected objects is synthesized and presented. Overall, the findings of this dissertation have relevant implications for research and practice in the fields of technology acceptance, digital life, and digital transformation.
In connection with the recent treatment of radium and the actinides, the Gmelin Institute is carrying out the description of thorium and its compounds. The supplement volumes A 2, A 3 and A 4 with the history, isotopes, uses, the recovery of thorium and general properties of thorium atom and ions, the thermodynamics of its compounds and solutions, and spectroscopic data have already been published. The supplement vol- umes C 1, C 2 and C 3 describing the compounds with the noble gases, hydrogen, oxygen compounds and nitrogen compounds are also available; also has been pu- blished Supplement Volume C 5 describing the compounds with sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and boron. The Supplement Volume D 1 and D 2 describing the properties of thorium ions in solution and the solvent extraction of thorium as well as Supplement Volume E de- scribing the coordination compounds also have been published. The present supplement volume A 5 of the Gmelin Handbook "Thorium" is devoted to the analytical chem- istry of this element, to its biological behavior and to health protection and safety control, including the monitoring of occupational exposure received by personnel. The analytical chemistry of thorium relies mainly on the so-called "classical" determination methods like gravimetric, volumetric, and spectrometric methods. Radiometric methods find also large application in the analytical chemistry of thorium. Presently we have a good understanding of the biological behavior of this danger- ous radioelement, together with a broad knowledge of its metabolism and its effects on humans. The therapeutic decorporation of thorium is also treated in this volume.
