The aim of this work is to present, in a unified and reasonably self-contained way, certain aspects of functional analysis which are needed to treat function spaces whose topology is not derived from a single norm, their topological duals and operators between those spaces. We treat spaces of continuous, analytic and smooth functions as well as sequence spaces. Operators of differentiation, integration, composition, multiplication and partial differential operators between those spaces are studied. A brief introduction to Laurent Schwartz’s theory of distributions and to Lars Hörmander’s approach to linear partial differential operators is presented. The novelty of our approach lies mainly on two facts. First of all, we show all these topics together in an accessible way, stressing the connection between them. Second, we keep it always at a level that is accessible to beginners and young researchers. Moreover, parts of the book might be of interest for researchers in functional analysis and operator theory. Our aim is not to build and describe a whole, complete theory, but to serve as an introduction to some aspects that we believe are interesting. We wish to guide any reader that wishes to enter in some of these topics in their first steps. Our hope is that they learn interesting aspects of functional analysis and become interested to broaden their knowledge about function and sequence spaces and operators between them. The text is addressed to students at a master level, or even undergraduate at the last semesters, since only knowledge on real and complex analysis is assumed. We have intended to be as self-contained as possible, and wherever an external citation is needed, we try to be as precise as we can. Our aim is to be an introduction to topics in, or connected with, different aspects of functional analysis. Many of them are in some sense classical, but we tried to show a unified direct approach; some others are new. This is why parts of these lectures might be of some interest even for researchers in related areas of functional analysis or operator theory. There is a full chapter about transitive and mean ergodic operators on locally convex spaces. This material is new in book form. It is a novel approach and can be of interest for researchers in the area.

A major contemporary playwright and director. By the late 1970s, internationally known performance groups such as Els Joglars, La Fura dels Baus or La Cubana had precipitated a decline in text-based Catalan theatre, reversed in the mid 1980s with the appearance of a younger generation of playwrights led by Sergi Belbel. Influenced by contemporary European rather than Spanish or Catalan drama, his work was very different from the realist idiom favoured by playwrights of the Franco generation. Butplaywriting is only one aspect of Belbel's work as a theatre practitioner. He also has a highly successful career as a director of Spanish, Catalan and foreign plays [a number of which he himself has translated], and, since 2006, he has held the position of Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Catalonia. This study examines these three key aspects of his career, as well as Ventura Pons's film adaptations of his plays. Finally, it considersthe reception of his plays in several countries, analysing his evolving relationship with critics at home and abroad. This book examines troupes, plays, festivals, performative practices, and audiences active during the final years of the Franco dictatorship and the beginning of the transition to democracy. This period, spanning 1968 to 1982, is considered the historical moment that most directly shaped contemporary Spanish politics and society. The dominant narrative of the Transition has long portrayed it as a normalized, non-confrontational, and consensual process steered by political elites. But the world of Spanish theater tells a very different story - one in which ordinary Spaniards played a vital role in the transition to democracy. The chapters of this book draw on censorship files, photographs, audiovisual and textual material, and the author’s own interviews with more than a dozen audience and troupe members. Using these sources, David Rodriguez-Solas examines the notable experimentation during this period with theatrical performance and music; the establishment of performing spaces and festivals; the development of touring networks as a way to evade censorship; and the creation of networks of support that opposed diverse forms of violence and repression. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in theater and the cultural and political history of Spain in the 1960s and 1970s.

Importantly, he explains that the Victorian Royal Navy, far from being the reactionary body it is so often depicted as, was, in fact, at the forefront of technological change, for example in the employment of torpedoes and the development of countermeasures to them. D K BROWN was a distinguished naval architect who retired in 1988 as Deputy Chief Naval Architect of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors. He published widely on the subject of warship design and built a reputation as a clear and brilliant commentator on the development of the ships of the Royal Navy. He died in 2008.

This book highlights the results from over a year of ethnobotanical research in a rural and an urban community in Jamaica, where we interviewed more than 100 people who use medicinal plants for healthcare. The goal of this research was to better understand patterns of medicinal plant knowledge, and to find out which plants are used in consensus by local people for a variety of illnesses. For this book, we selected 25 popular medicinal plant species mentioned during fieldwork. Through individual interviews, we were able to rank plants according to their frequency of mention, and categorized the medicinal uses for each species as “major” (mentioned by more than 20% of people in a community) or “minor” (mentioned by more than 5%, but less than 20% of people). Botanical identification of plant specimens collected in the wild allowed for cross-linking of common and scientific plant names. To supplement field research, we undertook a comprehensive search and review of the ethnobotanical and biomedical literature. Our book summarizes all this information in detail under specific sub-headings.

Drooling of saliva is a relatively common occurrence following a number of neurological insults; however, it remains under-recognised by clinicians as a problem. Even when recognised, it is often managed sub-optimally. The pro-active and multi-disciplinary management of drooling can significantly improve the quality of life for patients and their carers. In this book,42 we aim to improve the knowledge of this common and often debilitating problem amongst clinicians of varied backgrounds. We feel it will be of particular value to physicians in neurology and rehabilitation medicine, but also to general physicians, nurses and speech and language therapists who manage patients with chronic neurological conditions.
