An important case study of chiefdom collapse and societal reemergence Caborn-Welborn, a late Mississippian (A.D. 1400-1700) farming society centered at the confluence of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers (in what is now southwestern Indiana, southeastern Illinois, and northwestern Kentucky), developed following the collapse of the Angel chiefdom (A.D. 1000-1400). Using ceramic and settlement data, David Pollack examines the ways in which that new society reconstructed social, political, and economic relationships from the remnants of the Angel chiefdom. Unlike most instances of the demise of a complex society led by elites, the Caborn-Welborn population did not become more inward-looking, as indicated by an increase in extraregional interaction, nor did they disperse to smaller more widely scattered settlements, as evidenced by a continuation of a hierarchy that included large villages. This book makes available for the first time detailed, well-illustrated descriptions of Caborn-Welborn ceramics, identifies ceramic types and attributes that reflect Caborn-Welborn interaction with Oneota tribal groups and central Mississippi valley Mississippian groups, and offers an internal regional chronology. Based on intraregional differences in ceramic decoration, the types of vessels interred with the dead, and cemetery location, Pollack suggests that in addition to the former Angel population, Caborn-Welborn society may have included households that relocated to the Ohio/Wabash confluence from nearby collapsing polities, and that Caborn-Welborn’s sociopolitical organization could be better considered as a riverine confederacy.

Our knowledge of postoperative thromboembolic complications has increased enormously over the past 2 decades, particularly where diag nosis and prophylaxis are concerned. The 125 I-fibrinogen method of diagnosing thrombosis has completely changed our concept of the frequency, occurrence, and natural course of thrombosis, and it has formed the basis of most thromboprophylactic studies. Concurrently with the development of this diagnostic method, two methods for the prophylaxis of thrombosis have come into vo gue, namely low-dose heparin and dextran. Both these methods were tested in very extensive studies during the seventies, and their value has been unequivocally proved, for reducing both the frequency of thrombosis with and without symptoms, and the frequency of fatal pulmonary embolism. Thromboprophylaxis is not particularly common in surgery; how ever, and its general use is far from uncontested. It has been argued that not only does it complicate surgical activities and make them mo re expensive, but it also involves an unacceptable number of other complications.

That a close relationship exists between the specialties of peripheral vascular diseases and of orthopedic and general surgery has frequently been brought sharply into focus for both of us during many years of clinical experience in our respective fields of endeavor. Frequently, trauma to musculoskeletal struc tures has also been responsible for the production of a seriously compromised local blood flow, thus requiring a combined therapeutic approach to the solution of the problem. Improper utilization of appliances and conventional surgical procedures for common orthopedic conditions has on occasion likewise been followed by disastrous vascular complications. The fact that these possibilities exist in clinical practice has been the prime motivation for the development of this monograph. The purpose of the volume is first to make readily available to the orthopedic or the general surgeon information that will allow him to determine whether a limb which he is treating is also suffering from an underlying impairment of arterial, venous, or lymphatic circulation. On the basis of such data, he should be in a better position to institute an appropriate and safe therapeutic program. Second, the subject matter should acquaint him with the necessary steps for early recognition of vascular complications of musculoskeletal disorders pro duced by trauma, with their differential diagnosis, and with their management. Finally, it should make him aware of the fact that a relatively large number of clinical entities possess both vascular and orthopedic components, and that it is essential to distinguish one from the other.

Egypt's own view of itself has been neglected; views of it in the ancient past, in more recent times and today have remained underexposed. Encounters with Ancient Egypt is a series of eight books which addresses these issues. The books interrelate, inform and illuminate one another and will appeal to a wide market including academics, students and the general public interested in Archaeology, Egyptology, Anthropology, Architecture, Design and History. Geographically, Egypt is clearly on the African continent, yet Ancient Egypt is routinely regarded as a non-African cultural form. The significance of Ancient Egypt for the rest of Africa is a hotly debated issue with complex ramifications. This book considers how Ancient Egypt was dislocated from Africa, drawing on a wide range of sources. It examines key issues such as the evidence for actual contacts between Egypt and other early African cultures, and how influential, or not, Egypt was on them. Some scholars argue that to its north Egypt's influence on Mediterranean civilization was downplayed by western scholarship. Further afield, on the African continent perceptions of Ancient Egypt were coloured by biblical sources, emphasizing the persecution of the Israelites. An extensive selection of fresh insights are provided, several focusing on cultural interactions between Egypt and Nubia from 1000 BCE to 500 CE, developing a nuanced picture of these interactions and describing the limitations of an 'Egyptological' approach to them.
