This study centres around three leading military statesmen who served under Oliver Comwell but were also his kin and shared the experiences of the civil wars, John Disbrowe (1608–80), Henry Ireton (1611–51), and Charles Fleetwood (1618–92). It seeks to develop our picture of their positions from the context of their kin link to Cromwell and how their private worlds shaped their public roles, how kinship was part of the functioning of the Cromwellian state, how they were seen and presented, and how this impacted on their own lives, and their kin, before and after the Restoration. Cromwell's career can be explored further by considering figures in his kinship network to show how the public and private overlapped and influenced each other through their interaction before and after 1660. This study aims to consider the trajectory of elements of Cromwell's network and how its functioning and the interaction of its constituent parts over time shaped the politics of the years 1643 to 1660 but also how the survival of some networks after 1660 were continuing communities of those willing to own their memories of the civil wars, regicide, and Cromwell. A study of aspects of Cromwell's kin also provides examples of the continuities between those who resisted the Stuarts in the 1640s and 1650s and did so again in the 1680s. Suitable for specialists in the area and students taking courses on early modern British, European and American history as well as those with a more general interest in the period.

This book is based on the papers presented at the conference on "Mecha nisms of DNA Damage and Repair: Implications for Carcinogenesis and Risk Assessment," held at the National Bureau of Standards on June 2-7, 1985, This volume deals with mechanisms of DNA damage and repair at the molecular level; consequences of unrepaired or misrepaired damage, with major emphasis on carcinogenesis; drugs which bind selectively to altered and potentially damaging DNA sequences; and potential utilization of DNA damage as an endpoint for assessing risks of UV light, ionizing radiations, chemicals, drugs, and hazardous agents in foods. Because the induction of mutations by radiation and genotoxic chemicals has been observed to follow one-hit kinetics in some instances, it is generally assumed that any level of exposure to a DNA-damaging agent may increase the risk of genetic disease or cancer in an exposed population. At the same time, however, there is evidence that although the DNA of living cells is continually damaged by natural background radiation, free radicals, and other naturally occurring processes, most of the damage is normally repaired.

Our understanding of psychophysiological states are now more broadly defined by the inclusion of the lateralized ultradian rhythms of the autonomic and central nervous systems (ANS and CNS) that play a key regulatory role in mind-body states. These neural rhythms are a unique step in the evolution of the nervous system that have mostly been ignored or missed in our understanding of physiology, mental activities, brain rhythms, and in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The multivariate physiological experiments reviewed in this book provide a new "big picture for how the body's major systems (ANS, CNS, neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, fuel-regulatory, gastrointestinal, immune) are regulated, integrated, and coordinated by the ANS via the hypothalamus during both waking and sleep. The first edition, Prescriptions for Children with Learning and Adjustment Problems, was published in 1972 (Blanco) and was created to fill a specific need of school and clinical psychologists, guidance counselors, social workers, school personnel, and graduate students in those fields. It became apparent to the author that there were insufficient references dealing with intervention techniques and treatment strategies for children with mental and physical problems. Since the third edition (1988), significantly enhanced by co-author, David F. Bogacki, Ph.D., approximately 30,000 copies of the book have been sold, mainly to school and clinical psychologists, counselors, special education personnel, and graduate students. Hundreds of notes and letters sent to the authors revealed the appreciation of readers. Many have requested an expanded edition to include a greater array of prescriptions for children who are disabled, with a focus on children in preschool and who are developmentally delayed; plus, ideas for professionals in private practice. Hence, this revised fourth edition, Prescriptions for Children with Psychological and Psychiatric Problems, follows almost thirty years after the third edition. During this time, considerable changes occurred in the field.
