In 2003, a cadre of researchers set out to determine what combination of supplemental or natural nutrition and white-tailed deer population density would produce the largest antlers on bucks without harming vegetation. They would come to call this combination “the sweet spot.” Over the course of their 15-year experiment, conducted through the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, Timothy E. Fulbright, Charles A. DeYoung, David G. Hewitt, Don A. Draeger, and 25 graduate students tracked the effects of deer density and enhanced versus natural nutrition on vegetation conditions. Through wet years and dry, in a semiarid environment with frequent droughts, they observed deer nutrition and food habits and analyzed population dynamics. Containing the results of this landmark, longitudinal study, in keeping with the Kleberg Institute’s mission, this volume provides science-based information for enhancing the conservation and management of Texas wildlife. Advanced White-Tailed Deer Management: The Nutrition–Population Density Sweet Spot presents this critical research for the first time as a reference for hunters, landowners, wildlife managers, and all those who work closely with white-tailed deer populations. It explains the findings of the Comanche-Faith Project and the implications of these findings for white-tailed deer ecology and management throughout the range of the species with the goal of improving management.

Ralph Verney was born in 1879. His grandfather, Sir Harry Verne, had married as his second wife, Parthenope, Sister of Florence Nightingale, who was Ralph's Godmother. In 1900 he joined the Riffle Brigade and was sent to South Africa where the Boer War was then in progress. A dutiful son, he wrote regularly to his parents, describing every detail of his daily life. Fortunately these letters have survived and have now been edited for publication by Ralph's own son, David. Quite apart from the intrinsic interest of what the letters actually say, they have another rarer quality, in that they lay bare the standards by which a young man of aristocratic birth was then guided. Old-fashioned they may sound, but not a few still regret their passing. In 1907 Ralph became ADC to Lord Chelmsford, then Governor of Queensland, and two years later falls in love and marries Nita Walker, daughter of a distinguished Australian banker and politician. Now some of Nita's letters enliven the correspondence and soon a baby is on the way. So too is the First World War and Ralph finds himself back with his regiment in France, where he has what must, ironically, be regarded as the good fortune of the wounded. At the end of his first volume we leave him on the road to recovery and to India where he will shortly rejoin Lord Chelmsford.

During the past decade there has been a dramatic change in the nature of mobile communications technology and its impact on the general communic ations environment. In the 1970s, mobile radio was a minority activity in communications, based on relatively unsophisticated technology. The 1980s, however, have seen the emergence of analogue cellular systems and the definition of future digital systems, and the predicted demand for these services is such that investigations into the use of higher frequency bands have already begun. It is predicted that, by the late 1990s, the 'personal communications' world will have resulted in the majority of adults in Europe and North America being dependent on radio-connected terminals of various kinds for more than 50% of their total telecommunications needs. The technology which will form the basis of this revolution has now been defined, at least in outline, and the fixed and mobile equipment that will be used in systems of the future will bear little resemblance to that available even ten years ago. It is impossible within the confines of a single, relatively short book to cover all the subject areas needed for a study of this exciting and expanding field of technology. We have, perforce, been selective and have chosen those topics which we believe to be of primary importance at the present time.

The renowned British railroad historian delivers “a well-illustrated account of the rationale behind Collett’s construction of this 80 strong class” (West Somerset Railway Association). English railway engineer George Jackson Churchward proposed a 5ft 8in wheeled 4-6-0 for mixed traffic duties in 1901 and it was seriously considered in 1905, but it took until 1936 before his successor, Charles Collett, realized the plan by persuading the GWR Board to replace many of the 43XX moguls with modern standard mixed traffic engines that bore a remarkable likeness to the Churchward proposal. David Maidment has written another in his series of “Locomotive Portfolios” for Pen & Sword to coincide with the construction of a new “Grange” at Llangollen from GW standard parts to fill the gap left by the total withdrawal and scrapping of one of that railway’s most popular classes—to their crews at the very least. Thirty-five years ago a Masonic researcher working in the Guildhall in London came across the records of an obscure Military Order formed during the 3rd Crusade, which adopted St. Thomas a Becket as its Patron Saint. Although never large, it eventually became important to the people of London but was one of the casualties and disappeared during the Dissolution of the Monasteries ordered by King Henry VIII. Impressed by its entirely-English character and the laudable reasons for its foundation, he described it to a handful of masonic friends who thought it worth 'reviving' and did so on a limited basis in a private house in Blackheath. In 1998 it was decided to open its membership beyond the limit imposed by their cramped meeting place. This book is an account of what happened after that decision was taken.
