This second book by David Esling is a worthy companion for its predecessor “A FLOWING THROUGH”. We read again the narrative of a teacher’s creative approaches for teaching and learning within a primary school in a socially disadvantaged suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, towards the end of his career. “A FLOWING THROUGH TOO” discusses a series of artistic explorations that flow from simple staring points, pass by milestones and finish with polished achievements. The inspirational stories of his explorations with the children by his side will captivate the hearts and minds of student teachers, teachers, teachers of teachers and all those who love to work alongside children. The text of each explorative journey is accompanied by the teacher’s photographs and include relevant and interesting conversations between the participants. Together, they bring the stories back to life and invite the reader to sit alongside and participate in the explorations. The children’s art, mainly drawing, was often outstanding, but the journey rather than the destination carried the greater significance. Their emerging skills as observers and the developing expertise in their interpretations of what they could see were remarkable. However, David used art as a means of reaching out to children, many of whom had no wish to attend school. Their shared successes brought about a dramatic rise in the children’s self-esteem, a more positive attitude towards learning, and improving the relationships with each other. School became an exciting place as the teacher and the children together played the active roles of teachers and learners. They were learning how to learn.

Cognitive Development: The Child's Acquisition of Diagonality is an empirical and rational enquiry into the child's development of a conceptual system relating to the concept of the diagonal during the age range three to six years. A detailed examination will be made of why a young child has difficulty with such a problem, and what occurs during development that removes this difficulty. In the context of these empirical arguments, the book considers such theoretical questions as the nature of intellectual skills and conceptual or symbolic knowledge, as well as the role of experience and instruction in their development. The study concludes with a description of the child's reconstruction of the diagonal in terms of what at least poses as a general model of perceptual and intellectual development, and accounts for, among other things, man's increasing ability to apprehend and theorize about the motion of the stars. It shows that it is the elaboration of the child's perceptual knowledge in the context of his performatory attempts in such cultural media as language and geometry that accounts for his ability to copy a diagonal in particular and his intellectual development in general.

When Richard Alan Stikeman, an incredible businessman, community leader, and family man, died from malignant mesothelioma, his family, friends, and community established the Stikeman Fund for Surgical Advancement and the Stikeman Visiting Professorship in order to commemorate him. Dr Dag Munro, Stikeman's treating surgeon, proposed the concept of an annual visiting professor as a unique way to honour his patient. The primary goal of the fund was to enhance surgical education for students, residents, and faculty in the McGill University Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. In the words of one of the founders – Richard's brother Heward Stikeman – it should "sharpen people" and keep McGill's program at the forefront of cardiothoracic education. Former residents were invited to return on an annual basis. Surgical research was added to the program and benefited from the wisdom of fifty world-class visitors. This contributed to a high degree of loyalty, adhesion, and philanthropy to the division. The Stikeman Visiting Professorship has thus unified cardiothoracic surgery under the McGill umbrella: Dr A.R.C. Dobell identified the professorship as the glue that holds the division together. The Stikeman Visiting Professorship has emerged over the years as an important McGill legacy, its growth and duration a tribute to its founders, builders, and supporters. This book is a celebration of that legacy.
