In these years Eisenhower worked hard to hold the focus of American national politics on the two major objectives he had set for his presidency in 1952: to sustain the policy of containment without precipitating a war with the Soviet Union and to reduce the role of the federal government in U.S. domestic affairs. In both cases, events at home and abroad intruded—diverting attention to immediate problems, endangering the peace, and forcing the White House to devote most of its leadership to the crises of the day. As president during this tense period, Eisenhower maintained an extensive and revealing correspondence with prominent individuals as well as with personal friends. These letters, together with the occasional entries made in his diary, shed considerable light upon the major national concerns of the 1950s. The volumes also include private and secret correspondence previously unavailable to scholars. Some of these items have been only recently declassified, and many appear here in print for the first time. Taken as a whole, the Eisenhower papers from 1957-61 provide firm documentary evidence of the manner in which Eisenhower dealt with the complex internal and external problems faced by all of our modern political leaders.

Originally written for the fiftieth anniversary of the Constitution of Ireland, this book is an account of how the Constitution's requirements have been implemented by the legislature and interpreted by the courts. In this way it provides an integrated and contextual account of constitutional law in Ireland. It goes as far as to place it in context of some foreign constitutions, especially the Constitutions of the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, as indeed the Irish courts refer frequently to other countries for guidance in interpreting the Constitution. The book largely falls into four parts. The first few chapters are introductory and cover the drafting and adoption of the Constitution, some features of the State and its citizens, and the judicial review of laws. The next few chapters deal with the various institutions of government and with the activities of the State in the international arena and in relation to fiscal matters. Then following on from this there are a number of chapters which consider what may be termed the various civil liberties and rights. There is a final brief section, towards the end of the book which deals with the various legal breaches of the Constitution. This new edition has been extensively rewritten to account for the enormous to take into account the tumultuous changes in Irish Constitutional Law in the intervening years. Challenges to articles, referenda, new legislation, and cases are all judicially considered. Michael Forde and David Leonard offer the reader everything they need to know on this complex subject.

This is done largely within the context of natural products synthesis, but includes some unnatural products synthesis. Multiple approaches to each group of synthesis targets are presented, and the approaches are compared with one another with an eye on similarities and differences. General problems in organic synthesis (for example, strategies for the preparation of 6-membered rings and 5-membered rings, the importance of oxidation state, the problem of acyclic diastereoselectivity, the problem of controlling absolute stereochemistry, the importance of functional group relationships) are introduced early in the book and revisited throughout the text within the context of a variety of structurally unrelated natural products. The book includes power-point presentations to provide teachers who do not (or do) specialize in organic synthesis with access to well-organized material they can use in the classroom (with advanced students). The book provides the reader with a somewhat historical overview of organic and natural products chemistry, and spans synthetic methodology that dates from the 1940's to present time. It is written in a style that readers will find entertaining at times. It also contains lots of useful references with complete titles provided. This is much more helpful to the reader than the usual author-journal-year-page information.
