After a series of portentous dreams, Richard Moss is drawn to a secluded spot in Ashdown Forest. He witnesses a spacecraft landing and is taken to a distant planet called Terra Nova where inhabitants of Earth migrated 5,125 years ago. Terra Nova is ruled by a 'Great Leader' named Ezra who oppresses his people. Richard is imprisoned but then rescued by a cosmonaut named Noah and he joins the resistance, forcing Ezra out of power. Richard learns he was brought to Terra Nova to equip him to return to Earth to help avert a similar disaster recurring there. He hears a Mayan prediction of an impending cataclysmic event as another cosmic cycle of 5,125 years is about to end. A deadly asteroid is heading for Earth which will lead to the extinction of its inhabitants unless a way can be devised to divert it.

The book opens when I receive an unexpected phone call from Hector Elizalde, an employee at Don King's office in Florida. He is en route to a meeting in Europe and will return to the UK in a week's time. He promises to call again upon his return. He is as good as his word and phones with an offer to join Don King’s organisation where the expertise I gained while working for CNN International for ten years, can be put to good use. Satellite broadcasting provides a means of distributing current or delayed footage of boxing programmes to subscribers throughout the world. Consequently, my knowledge will generate more income from the sale of Don King’s boxing programmes. Subscribers download the satellite’s signals and, depending on time zones, they can broadcast the programming immediately or at a time of their choosing. Two broadcasts of the programme are permitted under the contract for each programme received. The book, while concentrating on the Don King story, intercedes with my life story up to the time when I eventually join Don at his office in Florida. My knowledge of an annual event, named Sportel, which is held in Monaco, persuades Don King to rent a booth where sales of programming are made to buyers eager to meet Don King. This results in increased sales of his boxing programmes and opens the way for Sportel to extend its reach to an annual event in Miami. Don King Came Calling, with its twists and turns is a remarkable book that will captivate its readers.

This second selection of essays by David Fallows draws the focus towards individual composers of the 'long' fifteenth century and what we can learn about their songs. In twenty-one essays on the secular works of composers from Ciconia and Oswald von Wolkenstein via Binchois, Ockeghem, Busnoys and Regis to Josquin, Henry VIII and Petrus Alamire, one repeated theme is how a consideration of the songs can help the way to a broader understanding of a composer's output. Since there are more song sources and more individual pieces now available for study, there are more handles for dating, for geographical location and for social alignment. Another theme concerns the various different ways in which particular songs have their impact on the next generations. Yet another concerns the authorshop of poems that were set to music by Binchois and Ciconia in particular. A group of essays on Josquin were parerga to the author's edition of his four-voice secular music for the New Josquin Edition (2005) and to his monograph on the composer (2009).

The University of Alabama (UA) is one of the most prominent and fascinating universities in the United States. Volume One of this series explored UA’s 1819 birth, its formative years, its burning by Union soldiers, and its subsequent rebirth in 1871. Volume Two introduces a number of important elements into the ongoing narrative, including: the University’s continual hassle with the radical state government through 1877; a span of only seven years wherein three UA presidents either die in office or in Tuscaloosa shortly after resigning, creating a terrible period of psychological mourning that affected everyone associated with the University; the strict admission of women students, and the effect of this on the faculty, administration, and the cadets; and the establishment of student-written works including a journal, a newspaper, and a yearbook. The volume also looks at the history of unofficial student sports dating from the 1870s and the official birth in 1892 of a school-sanctioned athletic program for football and baseball, the germ of what would eventually be named the Crimson Tide, including the first twelve rocky years of the program. It also explores the successful 1900 Student Rebellion against the military style of student government, a rebellion that would rock the very soul of the school, involving the state press, the legislature, the governor, the alumni, and the citizens of Alabama, and which witnessed the fall of the commandant and eventually of the president, thus wrenching the students out of their fluctuating but often sorrowful psychological state of mind into an ever-evolving psychology and experience of success.
