Praise for previous volumes of To Improve Health and Health Care: "The particular strength of the book is the critical nature of the articles. These are not glossy renditions of the good deeds of the foundation; rather they examine in depth both what went right and what went wrong with the projects the foundation sponsored. Anyone with an interest in improving health care in America will want to know what can be done, and perhaps even more importantly, what cannot be done even by an independent institution with substantial resources to invest in new ideas." -- Jeremy Holtzman, MD MS, University of Minnesota Medical School, Doody Publishing (2002). "This is a useful guide to both the grant seeker and the planner of similar projects who address health and healthcare needs in communities." -- Ann H. Cary, PhD, MPH, RN, George Mason University, (Doody Publishing, 1999.) Since 1972, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health. To further its mission of improving the health and health care of all Americans, the Foundation strives to foster innovation, develop ideas, disseminate information, and enable committed people to devote their energies to improving the nation's well-being. As part of the Foundation's efforts to inform the public, To Improve Health and Health Care, the on-going anthology of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides an in-depth look into the programs it funds. Written for policy makers and practitioners, as well as interested members of the public, the series offers valuable lessons for leaders and educators developing plans for the coming years. This volume of the anthology covers Improving Quality of Care, Vulnerable Populations, Combating Substance Abuse, and other areas of concern

What if you can't afford nine-dollar tomatoes? That was the question award-winning journalist Tracie McMillan couldn't escape as she watched the debate about America's meals unfold, one that urges us to pay food's true cost--which is to say, pay more. So in 2009 McMillan embarked on a groundbreaking undercover journey to see what it takes to eat well in America. For nearly a year, she worked, ate, and lived alongside the working poor to examine how Americans eat when price matters. From the fields of California, a Walmart produce aisle outside of Detroit, and the kitchen of a New York City Applebee's, McMillan takes us into the heart of America's meals. With startling intimacy she portrays the lives and food of Mexican garlic crews, Midwestern produce managers, and Caribbean line cooks, while also chronicling her own attempts to live and eat on meager wages. Along the way, she asked the questions still facing America a decade after the declaration of an obesity epidemic: Why do we eat the way we do? And how can we change it? To find out, McMillan goes beyond the food on her plate to examine the national priorities that put it there. With her absorbing blend of riveting narrative and formidable investigative reporting, McMillan takes us from dusty fields to clanging restaurant kitchens, linking her work to the quality of our meals--and always placing her observations in the context of America's approach not just to farms and kitchens but to wages and work. The surprising answers that McMillan found on her journey have profound implications for our food and agriculture, and also for how we see ourselves as a nation. Through stunning reportage, Tracie McMillan makes the simple case that--city or country, rich or poor--everyone wants good food. Fearlessly reported and beautifully written, The American Way of Eating goes beyond statistics and culture wars to deliver a book that is fiercely intelligent and compulsively readable. Talking about dinner will never be the same again.

Written by an author with plenty of experience holding a scalpel, Dr. David Schneider’s The Invention of Surgery is an in-depth biography of the practice that has leapt forward over the centuries from the dangerous guesswork of ancient Greek physicians through the world-changing developments of anesthesia and antiseptic operating rooms to the “implant revolution” of the twentieth century. The Invention of Surgery is history of surgery that explains this dramatic, world-changing progress and highlights the personalities of the discipline's most dynamic historical figures. It links together the lives of the pioneering scientists who first understood what causes disease and how surgery could powerfully intercede in people’s lives, and then shows how the rise of surgery intersected with many of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the last century. And as Schneider argues, surgery has not finished transforming; new technologies are constantly reinventing both the practice of surgery and the nature of the objects we are permanently implanting in our bodies. Schneider considers these latest developments, asking “What’s next?” and analyzing how our conception of surgery has changed alongside our evolving ideas of medicine, technology, and our bodies.
In less than four months, beginning with a staff of five, an obscure office buried deep within the federal bureaucracy transformed the nation's hospitals from our most racially and economically segregated institutions into our most integrated. These powerful private institutions, which had for a half century selectively served people on the basis of race and wealth, began equally caring for all on the basis of need. The book draws the reader into the struggles of the unsung heroes of the transformation, black medical leaders whose stubborn courage helped shape the larger civil rights movement. They demanded an end to federal subsidization of discrimination in the form of Medicare payments to hospitals that embraced the "separate but equal" creed that shaped American life during the Jim Crow era. Faced with this pressure, the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations tried to play a cautious chess game, but that game led to perhaps the biggest gamble in the history of domestic policy. Leaders secretly recruited volunteer federal employees to serve as inspectors, and an invisible army of hospital workers and civil rights activists to work as agents, making it impossible for hospitals to get Medicare dollars with mere paper compliance. These triumphs did not come without casualties, yet the story offers lessons and hope for realizing this transformational dream.
At one moment in time or another, each of us has wondered about the lives of their ancestors. From where did our forebears come? Were they running away from their past or running toward their future? Were they just ordinary people or were they famous, or even infamous, individuals for their time? What views, inclinations, preoccupations or biases did they harbor that have been unknowingly passed down to us? David A. Burpee has spent three decades researching his family background. Through this fascinating journey, he has accumulated a vast amount of information on his ancestors dating back to the original immigrants to North America. In Biographical Sketches of Extraordinary Burpees from North America, Mr. Burpee profiles relatives who have made significant contributions to not only their immediate families but also to their local communities, states/provinces and Nations. Through these sketches, he lays out their personal motivations, beliefs, callings, accomplishments, challenges and disappointments. As one reads these fascinating accounts, it becomes apparent that there are two common factors that connect all of these individuals over time and distance. First, they all accomplished something significant in their lives that separated them from others around them. Second, they were all related in some way to each other. Biographical Sketches of Extraordinary Burpees from North America speaks not only to the heritage of one family but to all those readers eager to know more about the achievements and contributions of their own ancestors.
Nathaniel Southgate Shaler and the Culture of American Science is the first book-length study of the man who served as Harvard's Professor of Geology and Paleontology during the Darwinian era. Shaler was a student of Louis Agassiz and went on to a successful, multifaceted career as a geologist, geographer, educator, humanist, and poet. Livingstone employs a thematic approach to chart Shaler's career against the broader intellectual currents of America's Gilded Age. After tracing Shaler's life story from his boyhood in Kentucky through his student years at Harvard, his service with the Geological Survey, and eventually his years as Dean of Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School, the author examines Shaler's evolutionary vision and portrays his strategic efforts to reconcile the nineteenth century's scientific and religious world views. Livingstone assesses Shaler's prolific writings, including those on race, which demonstrate a typical concern to provide a "scientific" perspective on the political questions of immigration restriction and eugenic control. IN addition, the book explores his efforts to interweave geography and history, particularly in relation to the American frontier; and his contributions to geology and geomorphology. The portrait of Shaler is completed with a review of his educational thinking and his role in establishing the American Summer School and in furthering scientific and technological education. Nathaniel Southgate Shaler emerges from Livingstone's work as a distinctive figure in the development of the new scientific culture, a figure who provides a focal point for assessing the impact of evolutionary naturalism on late-nineteenth-century American thought.
