This is the second book in the dolphin trilogy The Perfect Pair, the factionalised memoir of Europe’s top 1970s dolphin trainer. It reveals the plight of the captive dolphin and gives an insight into the relationship between one particular trainer and his dolphins, whisking the reader on a journey deep into the dolphin psyche. Sometimes heart-breaking, sometimes funny – always compelling. Within these pages dwells a graphic story of the plight of the commercial dolphin. However, there are also heart-warming tales of the trainers and handlers who work with them. The Perfect Pair: The Mirror Cracks is the continuation of The Perfect Pair: The Enchanted Mirror (Matador, 2012) – now a core text for the BA(Hons) English and Creative Writing Course at The University of Salford. It is an immensely personal account of a young boy’s first love – a special love that takes him on a mystical journey deep into the world of the dolphin, effectively casting him into a reality that constantly questions man’s overall appraisal of these very special people of the sea. It tells of a mind connection – a psychic bond so strong that it enables the boy and his dolphins to become Europe’s top performing team… the best of the best. An analysis of how economic theories can be used to understand disordered and pathological gambling that calls on empirical evidence about behavior and the brain and argues that addictive gambling is the basic form of all addiction. The explanatory power of economic theory is tested by the phenomenon of irrational consumption, examples of which include such addictive behaviors as disordered and pathological gambling. Midbrain Mutiny examines different economic models of disordered gambling, using the frameworks of neuroeconomics (which analyzes decision making in the brain) and picoeconomics (which analyzes patterns of consumption behavior), and drawing on empirical evidence about behavior and the brain. The book describes addiction in neuroeconomic terms as chronic disruption of the balance between the midbrain dopamine system and the prefrontal and frontal serotonergic system, and reviews recent evidence from trials testing the effectiveness of antiaddiction drugs. The authors argue that the best way to understand disordered and addictive gambling is with a hybrid picoeconomic-neuroeconomic model.

This study investigates the situation of Universal Health Care (UHC) in China from a health economic perspective. The first chapter introduces the historical background, analyzes the relevance of UHC and sheds light on the current health insurance status. In this chapter a new holistic health insurance theory is proposed that allows the inclusion of preventive medicine. The second chapter introduces the "Definition and concept" consisting of three dimensions: Firstly, the height dimension with the leading question "What proportion of the costs is covered?". Secondly, the depth dimension that is concerned with the question "Which benefits are covered?". This chapter puts a special focus on the important economic role of non-communicable diseases. Thirdly, the breadth dimension which investigates the question "Who is insured?". The third chapter, looking at the first dimension, found a high but shrinking amount of out-of-pocket payments and catastrophic health payments. Comparing the payment and benefit distributions, it found the ability to pay principle and insufficient separation of health service payments from its consumption. The second dimension discovered problems concerning the roles of ministries, financing and the benefit package. Reforming these areas will be necessary to provide people with appropriate health care. The third dimension showed that migrant workers are exposed to more health risks, have less access to health care and a lower health status. The de facto coverage rate for the Chinese population (including migrant workers) was calculated to be 81.19% in 2011 and 82.16% in 2020. The goals of the Chinese Communist Party (90% in 2011 and nearly 100% in 2020) are hence not reached. The study closes with a "Summary and conclusion, a "Boundaries and discussion" and an "Outlook" section.
