Joseph Brodsky, one of the most prominent contemporary American poets, is also among the finest living poets in the Russian language. Nevertheless, his poetry and the crucial bilingual dimension of his poetic world are still insufficiently understood by Western audiences. How did the Russian-born Brodsky arrive at his present status as an international man of letters and American poet laureate? Has he been created by his bilingual experience, or has he fashioned the bilingual self as a necessary precondition for writing poetry in the first place? Here David Bethea suggests that the key to Brodsky, perhaps the last of the great Russian poets in the "bardic" mode, is in his relation to others, or the Other. Brodsky's master trope turns out to be "triangular vision," the tendency to mediate a prior model (Dante) with a closer model (Mandelstam) in the creation of a palimpsest-like text in which the poet is implicated as a triangulated hybrid of these earlier incarnations. In pursuing this theme, Bethea compares and contrasts Brodsky to the poet's favorite models--Donne, Auden, Mandelstam, and Tsvetaeva--and analyzes his fundamental differences with Nabokov, the only Russian exile of Brodsky's stature to rival him as a bilingual phenomenon. The life of a human community rests on common experience. Yet in modem life there is an experience common to all that threatens the very basis of community—the experience of exile. No one in the modem world has been spared the encounter with homelessness. Refugees and fugitives, the disillusioned and disenfranchised grow in number every day. Why does it happen? What does it mean? And how are we implicated? David Patterson responds to these and related questions by examining exile, a primary motif in Russian thought over the last century and a half. By “exile” he means not only a form of punishment but an existential condition. The 1981 Cargese Summer Institute on Fundamental Interactions was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (M. LEVY and J-L. BASDEVANT), CERN (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholique de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Kotholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. GASTMANS), which, since 1975 have joined their efforts and worked in common. It was the 24th Summer Institute held at Cargese and the 8th one organized by the two institutes of theoretical physics at Leuven and Louvain-Ia-Neuve. The 1985 school was centered around two main themes : the standard model of the fundamental interactions (and beyond) and astrophysics. The remarkable advances in the theoretical understanding and experimental confirmation of the standard model were reviewed in several lectures where the reader will find a thorough analysis of recent experiments as well as a detailed comparaison of the standard model with experiment. On a more theoretical side, supersymmetry, supergravity and strings were discussed as well. The second theme concerns astrophysics where the school was quite successful in bridging the gap between this fascinating subject and more conventional particle physics. Quid Pro Quo: I have tried to tell a creative tale of the people and events contemporaneous with a riot. The description I have given in Quid Pro Quo is not to be considered to represent all or most riots that have occurred in the United States during the so called civil rights revolution. Although I have seen riots, and similar civil disturbances at first hand, my concern is not with riots per se. My interest is with the people of this fictional city during the eight days-Friday to Friday-about whom this story is told. Perhaps the tale provides some insights, and it is hoped that corrective and ameliorative measures will follow comprehension of the problem. The Cleavage: In Book one there is the Jordan family: Sharon, a senior in college; her mother, Vera Jordan, an elementary school teacher, her father, Charles Jordan, a postal clerk, and her brother, Chuckie. The story is set in a northeastern community in the United States. The principal characters are Negroes. Sharon Jordan is on campus in an eastern university which is predominantly Negro. Her fiance is Henry Broadspan, a sophomore in medical school. The novel attempts to show in this instance, as in each of the other two books of The Cleavage, the basic separation existing within the Negro community between the black middle class and those below it. The distinctions of separation are based upon education, power, money, and family tradition. Family tradition is primarily evaluated on the number of generations of a given Negro family is removed from the south. In this novel are descriptions of the various separations within the group, of course, within the frame of reference of the northeastern United States.
