Nathan Feldman, a fortyish Jewish professor of philosophy, returns to his condo complex after a Saturday morning walk only to find that his name is no longer on his mailbox. The key to his condo isn’t in his pocket, and a resident across the hall, a good friend, refuses to buzz him in because she claims not to know him. As it turns out, no one recognizes him. He cannot find his wallet or cell phone. He suddenly has no way to prove who he is. He walks to his university and finds a different name on what he thought was his office door. Although he can provide detailed information about their lives to individuals whom he thought were friends and acquaintances, they treat him as a complete stranger. The life he remembers, including his name, seems to be nothing more than fiction. He suddenly finds himself homeless and penniless. Is he suffering from a strange form of amnesia characterized by false memories? His nightmare is only beginning. What he ultimately discovers about his true identity will completely unnerve him.

Gene therapy was conceived during the early and mid part of the 20th century. At first, it was considered a revolutionary biomedical procedure, which could potentially cure any disease for which the molecular bases were understood. Since then, gene therapy has gone through many stages and has evolved from a nearly unrealistic perspective to a real life application. Clinical efficacy in humans was demonstrated at the beginning of this century after its successful application in small-scale clinical trials to cure severe immunodeficiency in children. However, their successes were overshadowed some time later by the occurrence of vector-related leukaemia in a number of treated children. It is in this context that lentiviral vectors have appeared, with improved efficiency and, possibly, increased biosafety. Very recently, the first clinical trials with lentivectors have been carried out with some success. This Brief firstly defines gene therapy, and places lentivectors within this fascinating therapeutic strategy. Then follows a comprehensive description of the development of retroviral and lentiviral vectors and how to specifically target distinct cell types and tissues. The authors also discuss the application of lentivector gene therapy for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, ending with the application of lentivectors in human gene therapy clinical trials.

This lively portrait of English Jews reformulating their tradition in light of Enlightenment categories illuminates an overlooked corner in the history of Jewish culture in England and Jewish thought during the Enlightenment. Ruderman overturns the conventional view that the origins of modern Jewish consciousness are located exclusively within the German-Jewish experience, particularly Moses Mendelssohn's circle. James Friedman, a retired philosophy professor living in Houston, receives an invitation from a woman, identifying herself only as Shekhinah, who claims she was once God. She wants to talk to him about her decision to abandon heaven for earth. Accepting the invitation, Friedman encounters a tall, ebony-skinned, twenty-three-year-old, same-gender-loving woman who is wearing a "Black Lives Matter" t-shirt. She tells Friedman a creation story about a loving God who, at the moment of creation, fourteen billion years ago, gave up power over the world out of respect for human freedom. This view of God is similar to one Friedman has expounded. According to Shekhinah, to God's horror and surprise, countless human beings have misused their freedom to cause massive injustice--bigotry, genocide, cruelty, etc.--and to put the earth itself in peril. Powerless as God, Shekhinah asserts that the Creator could make a difference in the world only by becoming a human being--which meant the death of God. God, she claims, entered the world as a Black, Same-Gender-Loving Woman to divinely affirm three often disrespected identities. For reasons she reveals, Shekhinah, now a socially engaged secular Buddhist, chose Houston as the place to partner with others and begin her project of saving a damaged planet and achieving justice for all human beings.
