With the rapid expansion of legislation passed by Congress, the increasing mobility of society, and the growth of interstate commerce, the federal courts have assumed an important and sometimes dominant role in major litigation today. In A Lincoln Legacy, Chardavoyne tracks the history of these courts over eleven chapters, from their creation by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 to 2020. He discusses the changes in society that drove the evolving federal litigation and some significant cases heard in the Western District. Additionally, fifteen appendices are included in the book, listing of all the federal circuit and district judges in the Western District; commissioners; magistrate judges and bankruptcy judges; U.S. Attorneys; clerks of the courts; and more. Chardavoyne also identifies auxiliary offices and organizations revolving around the federal court that play a major role in its activities (e.g., the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Federal Public Defender’s Office, the Federal Bar Association, etc.). A Lincoln Legacyprovides a thorough examination of the history of the federal courts of Western Michigan. This book offers a comprehensive primer for the study of intensionality. It explores and assesses those key theories of intensionality which have been developed in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Each of the examined theories is tested as to whether it can account for the problems associated with (A) the intersubstitution salva veritate of co-extensional expressions, and (B) existential generalisation. All of these theories are subsequently compared so as to determine which of them comes closest to successfully solving these problems. The book examines four kinds of intensionalist approaches: the Fregean approach (including Church's formalisation of Frege's theory); the possible-worlds approaches of Carnap, Montague and Cresswell; the theory of properties relations and propositions devised by Bealer; and the Meinongian approaches put forward by Zalta and Priest. The book also proposes an alternative to intensionalism: sententialism. Sententialists argue that the problems of intensionality could be solved by appealing to linguistic items (usually sentences) rather than intensional entities. Drawing on the works of Quine, Davidson, Scheffler and R. M. Martin, it explores the viability and value of sententialism as an alternative to intensionalism.

Both at home and abroad, the events of 2002 contrasted significantly with those of the previous year, something for which most Canadians could be extremely grateful. To no ones surprise, however, the year was dominated by the issues that had captivated the worlds attention at the end of 2001: the attacks on the United States and the subsequent war on terror declared by the Bush Administration. Canada had chosen to stand shoulder to shoulder with its southern neighbour in response to those attacks, and in 2002 the meaning of that commitment became clear as Canada entered into full-scale combat operations in Afghanistan, suffered its first casualties, and ended the year torn over whether to follow the United States should it choose to take its war to Iraq.On the home front, a battle of an altogether different magnitude reached a turning point with the seeming resolution of the long-running struggle between Prime Minister Jean Chrtien and Minister of Finance Paul Martin even though, by years end, it was by no means clear who had actually won. Similarly, a number of the consequences of the 9/11 attacks remained unresolved. Bill C-17 had not been passed; Ottawa software engineer, Maher Arar languished in a Syrian jail where he had been sent by the United States; and the war drums were beating loudly around Iraq. Continuing in the standard for which it has been acclaimed, the Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2002 presents detailed analyses of events that have come to define our nation in recent years.
