The idea for publishing these books on the mechanism of action and on the biosynthesis of antibiotics was born of frustration in our attempts to keep abreast of the literature. Gone were the years when we were able to keep a biblio graphy on antibiotics and feel confident that we could find everything that was being published on this subject. These fields of investigation were moving for ward so rapidly and were encompassing so wide a range of specialized areas in microbiology and chemistry that it was almost impossible to keep abreast of developments. In our naivete and enthusiasm, however, we were unaware that we were toying with an idea that might enmesh us, that we were creating an entity with a life of its own, that we were letting loose a Golom who instead of being our servant would be our master. That we set up ideals for these books is obvious; they would be current guides to developments and information in the areas of mechanism of action and bio synthesis of antibiotics. For almost every subject, we wished to enlist the aid of an investigator who himself had played a part in determining the nature of the phenomena that were being discussed. One concept for the books was that they include only antibiotics for which a definitive, well-documented mechanism of action or biosynthetic pathway was known.

While much of the book focuses on a U.S. soldier and a German woman he befriends, there are many combat scenes as observed from both the American and German sides. From the book’s cover notes:February, 1945, and the German Wehrmacht everywhere in retreat before the advancing British and Americans, falling back on the Rhine, ready to cross that historic barrier, blow the spans that traversed it and then, in safety, recuperate for the struggle that would decide the fate of the Fatherland itself. It was natural for all eyes to turn to the north, to the wide reaches of the lower Rhine where the ultimate assault would be mounted. But this is a story of another sort and place: of a town standing beside the rushing waters of the upper Rhine and of a bridge, a four-hundred-yard steel ribbon over a river that flowed deep and swift between the cliffs. It is the story of how that doomed country cousin of a bridge became, in the span of minutes, the most important bridge in world history. The Bridge is a novel of many and varying characters, from the Generals of both sides down to the carpenters and slave laborers working on the bridge itself. But chiefly it focuses on a few individuals to whom the bridge became a symbol of all that was worth striving for in life. Among them, Douglas Stanton, called Doke, a casualty certified as recovered from his wounds and fit for duty, is sent to rejoin a “recon” troop, although his courage has left him and he is terrified that his luck has run out; and Major Clay Stanton, West Pointer and career officer, who has tried to get his younger brother off the hook. In the tremendous swirl of battle and death each came to know and understand more about the other—and himself.

Age of Promises explores the issue of electoral promises in twentieth century Britain - how they were made, how they were understood, and how they evolved across time - through a study of general election manifestos and election addresses. The authors argue that a history of the act of making promises - which is central to the political process, but which has not been sufficiently analysed - illuminates the development of political communication and democratic representation. The twentieth century saw a broad shift away from politics viewed as a discursive process whereby, at elections, it was enough to set out broad principles, with detailed policymaking to follow once in office following reflection and discussion. Over the first part of the century parties increasingly felt required to compile lists of specific policies to offer to voters, which they were then considered to have an obligation to carry out come what may. From 1945 onwards, moreover, there was even more focus on detailed, costed, pledges. We live in an age of growing uncertainty over the authority and status of political promises. In the wake of the 2016 EU referendum controversy erupted over parliamentary sovereignty. Should 'the will of the people' as manifested in the referendum result be supreme, or did MPs owe a primary responsibility to their constituents and/or to the party manifestos on which they had been elected? Age of Promises demonstrates that these debates build on a long history of differing understandings about what status of manifestos and addresses should have in shaping the actions of government.
