In medieval Scotland, an outlaw seeks his freedom—from both the merciless khan who conquered Europe, and the demon spirit that possesses him. All of Europe is ruled by the Khan, whose Golden Horde swept its conquering way across Europe in 1244. The Scottish outlaw Toby Strangerson, known as Longdirk, is ruled by an even harsher master. He is possessed by a “hob,” a demon spirit murderous as a child, although inherently neither good nor evil. Toby wants his freedom—and the spirit of the tyrant‐demon Nevil, ensorcelled in amethyst, can be traded for the exorcism of the hob. In order to make the exchange, though, Toby and his friend and ally Hamish must face the hexer Oreste on his own ground, in the dank and fetid dungeons of Barcelona, where souls are racked and tortured and destroyed on the relentless wheel of the Inquisition. This book was originally published under the pseudonym Ken Hood.

Longdirk, the hero of medieval Europe, faces his greatest threat. “Duncan excels at old-fashioned swashbuckling fantasy” (RT Book Reviews). The Scottish outlaw Toby Strangerson, known as Longdirk, has used gramarye, dark magic, to defeat the Fiend and save Europe from abject slavery—but he has also made himself the most feared and envied man in all of Italy. The hordes are reorganizing and plan to sweep over the Alps once more and retake their lost prize of power and conquest. Toby and his friend Hamish struggle to unite the quarreling city‐states into a single, powerful force to resist the invasion in a world where no ally can be trusted and traitors lurk in every shadow. But there is more at stake than freedom and the destiny of a continent. A woman’s love is also hanging in the balance. This book was originally published under the name Ken Hood.
The complete fantasy trilogy of a feared Scottish outlaw—from the author of the Seventh Sword series and “one of the leading masters of epic fantasy” (Publishers Weekly). In his action-packed fantasy saga, originally written under the pseudonym Ken Hood, Scottish-born, Aurora Award–winning author Dave Duncan tells the tale of Scottish outlaw Toby Strangerson, known and feared by the name Longdirk. In 1244, all of Europe is under the control of Genghis Khan, whose conquering Golden Horde has cut a swath of devastation. Scotland, in addition, lies under the heel of England. But out of the battle-scarred highlands, a hero will rise . . . Demon Sword: Young Toby Strangerson, a half-English bastard reared by a witchwife, wants only to shed his hated Sassenach blood and free his beloved highlands. As the outlaw Longdirk, Toby wields a sword that can cut down men like stalks of corn. But stranger winds are swirling across the lochs—eldritch winds that are ridden by hobs and wisps and demons. The enemy Sassenach king is also a sorcerer. His demon soul needs a body, and his Black Arts can free Europe from the Khan’s Golden Horde. Demon Rider: Longdirk has become possessed by a hob, a murderous demon spirit, as amoral as a child, neither inherently good nor evil. Toby wants his freedom—and the spirit of the tyrant-demon Nevil, ensorcelled in amethyst, can be traded for the exorcism of the hob. In order to make the exchange, though, Toby and his ally Hamish must face the hexer Oreste on his own ground, in the dank and fetid dungeons of Barcelona, where souls are racked and tortured—and ultimately destroyed on the relentless wheel of the Inquisition. China, then one of the most stable and powerful civilizations in the world, offered unique perspectives on various aspects of society which were distinct from the Founding Fathers’ European heritage. China provided an alternative set of social and political frameworks which supported the Founding Fathers’ efforts to craft a unique heritage for their young nation. These Founders sought to establish a political identity that was distinct from European aristocratic traditions.

David Bidini, rhythm guitarist with the Rheostatics, knows all too well what the life of a rock band in Canada involves: storied arenas one tour and bars wallpapered with photos of forgotten bands the next. Zit-speckled fans begging for a guitar pick and angry drunks chucking twenty-sixers and pint glasses. Opulent tour buses riding through apocalyptic snowstorms and cramped vans that reek of dope and beer. Brilliant performances and heart-sinking break-ups. Bidini has played all across the country many times, in venues as far flung and unalike as Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and the Royal Albert Hotel in Winnipeg. In 1996, when the Rheostatics opened for the Tragically Hip on their Trouble at the Henhouse tour, Bidini kept a diary. In On a Cold Road he weaves his colourful tales about that tour with revealing and hilarious anecdotes from the pioneers of Canadian rock - including BTO, Goddo, the Stampeders, Max Webster, Crowbar, the Guess Who, Triumph, Trooper, Bruce Cockburn, Gale Garnett, and Tommy Chong - whom Bidini later interviewed in an effort to compare their experiences with his. The result is an original, vivid, and unforgettable picture of what it has meant, for the last forty years, to be a rock musician in Canada.

The purpose of this book is to explore the ways in which the London Underground/ Tube was "mapped" by a number of writers from George Gissing to Virginia Woolf. From late Victorian London to the end of the World War II, "underground writing" created an imaginative world beneath the streets ofLondon. The real subterranean railway was therefore re-enacted in number of ways in writing, including as Dantean Underworld or hell, as gateway to a utopian future, as psychological looking- glass or as place of safety and security. The book is a chronological study from the opening of the first underground in the 1860s to its role in WW2. Each chapter explores perspectives on the underground in a number of writers, starting with George Gissing in the 1880s, moving through the work of H. G. Wells and into the writing of the1920s and 1930s including Virginia Woolf and George Orwell. It concludes with its portrayal in the fiction, poetry and art (including Henry Moore) of WW2. The approach takes a broadly cultural studies perspective, crossing the boundaries of transport history, literature and London/urban studies. It draws mainly on fiction but also uses poetry, art, journals, postcards and posters to illustrate. It links the actual underground trains, tracks andstations to the metaphorical world of "underground writing" and places the writing in a social/political context.
Broadmoor Village, the little community that embodies the American ethic of independence, survives despite neighboring annexations, budget crises, and even Mother Nature. This subdivision was built in San Mateo County by the Stoneson Company just after World War II, targeting returning veterans and their families. Established before Henry Doelger made neighboring Westlake, Westmoor, St. Francis, and other communities since annexed by Daly City, Broadmoor has repeatedly chosen to stay unincorporated and independent. This attitude has shaped Broadmoor through the years to assert its autonomous stature while surrounded by larger cities.
Going beyond a biography, this text uses the life of blacklisted Hollywood writer and director Abraham Lincoln Polonsky to help us understand the relationship between art and politics in American culture and to uncover the effects of US anticommunism and anti-Semitism.
There are many great rivalries in Division I college football, but only one can say it has been played the longest: Minnesota and Wisconsin. Since 1890, the Golden Gophers and Badgers have faced each other in the annual game known as the Border Battle. Early teams competed for the coveted "Slab of Bacon" trophy until 1948, when the winning team would take home Paul Bunyan's Axe, a tradition that continues to this day. Images of Sports: Minnesota-Wisconsin College Football Rivalry features magnificent games through the years, plus stories and images of remarkable players and coaches. Included are the historic national championships, Rose Bowls, All-Americans, and even fantasy teams, plus the involvement of presidents Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy in this enduring football rivalry.

This extraordinary investigation of the death of the author's grandson yields a powerful memoir of addiction, grief, and the stories we choose to tell our families and ourselves. Jared Kindred left his home and family at the age of eighteen, choosing to wander across America on freight train cars and live on the street. Addicted to alcohol most of his short life, and withholding the truth from many who loved him, he never found a way to survive. Through this ordeal, Dave Kindred's love for his grandson has never wavered. Leave Out the Tragic Parts is not merely a reflection on love and addiction and loss. It is a hard-won work of reportage, meticulously reconstructing the life Jared chose for himself--a life that rejected the comforts of civilization in favor of a chance to roam free. Kindred asks painful but important questions about the lies we tell to get along, and what binds families together or allows them to fracture. Jared's story ended in tragedy, but the act of telling it is an act of healing and redemption. This is an important book on how to love your family, from a great writer who has lived its lessons.
