At the end of this book you will probably be none the wiser! This book does not trivialise war but is written to be mostly light hearted, Can war be light hearted? No of course not but some of the experiences can be.

This book covers a 14-year period when the author progressed from being a boy sailor in the UK to become a chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. It offers a very interesting blend of life experiences of a growing young man through some frightening experiences and some happy times. Life as a boy sailor was exciting for him, but once the dark period of the WW2 emerged, things changed radically, and his knowledge and courage were tested in some dramatic experiences which are well described in his book. When he moved into the submarine service in late 1942, a very new experience awaited him and by then he was a married man entering fatherhood in the coming year and already wondering what to do when the war finally ended. The final chapter describes sadness and regrets as the author’s life radically changed with the pressures of finding a new profession and becoming a family member with three children and there was always a lingering regret at having taken the wrong pathway despite the emerging successes of his children.

In addition to these reflections, catalogs, school annuals, board minutes, presidential reports, internal memoranda, photo collections and other documents were consulted. Since few of these are public documents were consulted. Since few of these are public documents and the content was verified by those directly involved, we determined that it would be of limited value to footnote such sources. However, all sources remain a part of these APTS archives and are available to anyone interested in further research. The FEAST/APST story provides a striking example of God's sovereign direction of missionaries, educators, and national leaders over many years to develop an institution of exceptional quality for training of young men and women for Pentecostal ministry in their own nations. As a fundamental strategy to advance the kingdom of God around the world, the training of national leaders has remained a significant emphasis of Assemblies of God missions to this day. I pray that this accounting of the events that led to the development of FEAST/APST will serve as an inspiration to those who continue to devote themselves to Great Commission ministry. John F. However, in this synthesis of ideas developed over a decade, a timely re-appraisal of the potential of musicing for human flourishing is presented, emphasising its role in the history of human evolution alongside its potential as a resource for sustainable development. A holistic philosophy of music is outlined which recognises the complex web of meaning which spreads across complementary musical dimensions of performance and participation, whilst emphasising the ‘paramusical’ benefits which arise from both. Highlighting the notion that the social bonds which arise from musicing share much of the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment and love, musicing is presented as a resource with the potential for facilitating ethical human connection. The humanistic values which are thereby materialised during musicing – love, reciprocity and justice – form the experiential grounds for inhabiting alternative social realities. The book addresses how such a holistic philosophy of music might be implemented in practice, drawing on the author’s professional praxis as a performer, educator, community musician, composer and researcher, in particular their experience of musician education at Sage Gateshead, Royal College of Music and Trinity-Laban Conservatoire in the UK.
