This volume supplements "The Quotable Newman" (Sophia Institute Press, 2012), with 136 new topics and an overlap of 39 topics. Volume II is a bit more wide-ranging and perhaps also more "fun" (in a sense) for Newman devotees. Examples of the latter aspect might include Cardinal Newman's reflections upon his own writing and books, science and Christianity, heaven and hell, and old age. The citations also tend to be relatively shorter, and to include proportionately more material from his correspondence. I found two additional volumes of "Letters and Diaries" (volumes 27 and 28): covering the years of 1874-1878. They contain a lot of excellent observations and "gems" on a variety of topics, that I was delighted to find and now to pass along, for the education and edification of the reader. Once again, theology is the overwhelming emphasis. Anyone interested in Cardinal Newman's Catholic (or Anglican) doctrinal thinking and beliefs will, I trust, enjoy and learn from what I have compiled.
In 100, carefully selected places, BBC History Magazine editor Dave Musgrove takes us on an unforgettable historical tour through British history, from the Roman invasion to 1960s Liverpool. Musgrove has asked foremost British historians such as Dominic Sandbrook, to nominate the sites they believe to be the most important in our history, and has travelled to each place to provide a visitor's point of view alongside the captivating stories that make each one great. Covering the length and breadth of the British mainland and two thousand of years of history, 100 Places that Made Britain visits renowned sites such as the Tower of London and Runnymede, as well as less well-known places like Rushton Triangular Lodge in Northamptonshire - a three-sided, three-themed house built during the Reformation and designed to represent the Holy Trinity - and Jarrow, home of the first chronicler of Anglo-Saxon Britain, The Venerable Bede. Each essay adds another layer to our understanding of Britain's story, whether it be an advance in politics, religion, law or culture. Bringing the vast history of this small island to life, 100 Places that Made Britain is a captivating historical compendium that will have every reader criss-crossing the country to explore its myriad treasures.
Maybe some people study prophecy for the thrill of the sensational, like adrenaline addicts chasing the next sky-dive rush. Certainly, promises given hundreds or thousands of years before their fulfillments are remarkable. However, sensationalism is not the intended purpose. And some people may think that prophecy is an ancillary, nonessential part of theology. But the premise of this book is that God-given prophecy has a far more profound purpose than sensationalism and plays an essential, inseparable part in the gospel message. Now if faith in Christ is all that is necessary for salvation, why is prophecy essential? The angel messenger who gave the Revelation to John answered that question. The angel told John, "These are the true sayings of God." Then John fell at the feet of the angel to worship him. The angel responded, "See you do it not, for I am your fellow servant and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" (Rev. 19:10). The angel explained that all prophecy connects to Jesus. Intrinsic to Jesus is prophecy, as is all scripture. That which predicts or speaks of His divine and human nature, His life and miracles, His death and resurrection, and His earthly and heavenly kingdom are all interconnected--they are all a part of His story, His testimony, His person. Therefore, Christ is the unspoken basis for this specific blessing given to readers of the Revelation: "Blessed are they that read and hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written in it, for the time is at hand" (Rev. 1:3). Though there is rich reward in every book of the Bible, no other gives the aforementioned promise of blessing.
The anti-Catholic is one who thinks that Catholicism is not a Christian system of theology and that to be a good Christian and get saved, one must be a bad Catholic; that is, reject several tenets of Catholicism. James White (Reformed Baptist) is the leading and most influential anti-Catholic today. He specializes in debates, preferring moderated oral debates. I prefer written debate. This book features twelve back-and-forth debates with James White and also critiques or refutations of his writings. For those who agree with me that written, back-and-forth, substantive exchanges are worthy of the name "debate," this book will be a (hopefully helpful) close examination of the flawed theology of James White and his critiques of Catholicism. I'm happy, as always, to present both sides and let the reader judge. This is the beauty of dialogue. Readers may take in the arguments and data of both proponents in a dispute and exercise critical faculties in order to decide where the truth is to be found.
Readers will discover the remarkable stories of those who have suffered for the cause of Christ throughout the course of history. This volume reveals what inspired the great heroes of faith and drove them to give their all.
A series of resources & complete liturgies for the major services of Holy Week, by a former Sacristan of Iona Abbey. What would it have been like to be a pilgrim on the crowded streets of Jerusalem for that fateful Passover? What can we learn from the man with the water jug, or the Roman centurion? What can the woman with the alabaster jar tell us, or the young man who ran away naked as Roman soldiers tried to seize him? How did that first Easter change their lives? This book began life in community on Iona, & includes an Easter pilgrimage.

This book speaks to the majesty of the King James Bible, in both its literary contribution to the English language and how it distinguishes itself from the previous English translations and those that have been attempted since. The authors address the doctrines of Inspiration and Preservation; and that by faith, believe that only the King James Bible is worthy of being called the inspired/preserved word of God in the English language. The authors cover the Process of Bible translation by committee and the rules by which they were provided as guidance by the king at the Hampton Court conference. Specifically, the doctrinal impact of the Third Rule whereby the translators were to keep the old Ecclesiastical words such as "Church" not to be translated as "Congregation." Other words to be used were "Charity" in addition to "Love"; "Baptisms," as well as "Washings"; and the distinction between "Covenant" and "Testament" is clearly seen in the context where the words are used. In addition to the doctrinal import, there is considerable attention given to the printing technology of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries and a dissertation on the artwork of the first edition, printed in 1611. The practical results of preaching the King James Bible in places like the Philippines and other foreign lands are presented with plentiful illustrations and examples. Lastly, the authors have included the Epistle Dedicatory and Translators to the Reader that were provided in earlier editions of the King James Bible, but sadly, seldom printed in the newer editions. 2
Fifteen dialogues loosely based on encounters of a Catholic apologist with Protestants, over the course of nearly five years of Internet discussions on lists, bulletin boards, and private correspondence. The most important and fundamental issues that divide Protestants and Catholics are dealt with: the relationship of Bible and tradition, the authority of the Church, whether the Church and tradition can be infallible like the Bible, how one is saved, the relationship of faith and works, whether Catholics believe in "salvation by works," grace alone, etc.
Washed Away centers on an ordinary family man, whose faith is founded only in himself. He sustains a serious head injury during a fishing trip and is trapped on his boat, at the mercy of a raging storm on Lake Superior. The injury causes him to fall in and out of consciousness and launches him into the past, where events during the time of Christ and his own past are re-enacted. Each event has a message he will find to be of the utmost importance. As he moves between two worlds, he finds himself slowly losing his life and sanity in one while discovering hope and perhaps salvation in another.
Refreshes the parts other history books can’t reach... A bit ropy on the Renaissance? In the dark about the Enlightenment? Or, in fact, do you need a revision course on the entire history of the world and want to read a witty, irreverent, definitely not boring romp through everything that has ever happened on planet earth – from 15 billion years BC to the present day? Good. A Less Boring History of the World tells you everything you need to know from the Big Bang to Barack Obama, taking in the Byzantines, the Black Death, Bin Laden and the fall of bankers along the way, all boiled down to bite size chunks so that you can finally piece together all the different bits of history - and see how on earth we ended up in the mess we are today. A Less Boring History refreshes your memory and broadens your mind. And, if that’s not enough, it will also make you laugh. A lot.
Are you missing half the story about the last days? Virtually all attention these days is focused on the coming Antichrist—but he is only half the story. Many people are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy—a woman who rides the beast. Who is this woman? Tradition says she is connected with the church of Rome. But isn’t such a view outdated? After all, today’s Vatican is eager to join hands with Protestants worldwide. “The Catholic church has changed” is what we hear. Or has it? In A Woman Rides the Beast, prophecy expert Dave Hunt sifts through biblical truth and global events to present a well-defined portrait of the woman and her powerful place in the Antichrist’s future empire. Eight remarkable clues in Revelation 17 and 18 prove the woman’s identity beyond any reasonable doubt. A provocative account of what the Bible tells us is to come.
This book is the printed form of a Doctoral Dissertation, the focus of the Paper is the application of Ancient Near East covenant principles to exegesis of New Testament Scriptures. This is an important work, for such application demonstrates many fallacies within currently held to Reformed Theology. Application of covenant principles to interpretation of New Testament Scripture is a more complete hermeneutic than what the Reformers had, and must be incorporated into the modern codified set of Biblical Hermeneutics. Because the New Testament is not a testament but a covenant modeled after ANE covenants, understanding what a covenant is and how a covenant operates is paramount to a more complete and accurate set of interpretative rules for comprehending ancient documents. This work is no less important to preachers, teachers, scholars and theologians than is Mendenhall and Trumbull's seminal work on covenants, Kline's work on covenant law, or Sander's work on the law.
The director of the Killology Research Group shares “a thorough examination of the emotional and physical effects of deadly conflict” (Kirkus Reviews). On Combat examines the stress resulting from engaging in deadly battle and its effects on the human body, from the heart and the nervous system to visual and auditory perception to memory. The historical perspective on the evolution of combat provided in this text further deepens our understanding of the brave men and women who train their minds and bodies to go to that place from which others flee. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a war veteran and former West Point psychology professor, presents combat coping strategies, demonstrating how one can train the mind to be inoculated against stress, fear, and even pain. This fresh and informative look at post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) details how to prevent it, how to survive it, how to come out of it stronger, and how to help others who are experiencing it. Grossman underscores the importance of post-combat debriefing, when warriors gather to share, learn from each other, and begin to heal from the horror. Based on extensive new research, Grossman’s findings are supported by revealing quotes and anecdotes from combat veterans and other leaders in the warrior community.
One hot afternoon in 1998, Dave Bidini – who loves hockey, watches it, plays it, and breathes it – found the Stanley Cup final so tedious to watch that at one point he clicked channels to Martha Stewart – and never switched back. This made him wonder where in the world the game might exist free of the complications of professional sport. He set out to find the tropic of hockey. His quest took him to a rink on the seventh storey of a mall in Hong Kong – a rink encircled by a dragon-headed roller coaster – and to the gritty city of Harbin in northern China, where a version of hockey has been played for 600 years; to Dubai in the desert of the United Emirates, where hockey is brand new and incredulous Bedouin drop by the Al Ain rink to touch the ice; and to Transylvania, where the game is a war between Romanians and ethnic Hungarians, who were introduced to hockey by a 1929 newsreel of Canadians chasing the puck. Bidini’s encounters with odd-sized rinks and players of wildly different talents and experiences have inspired him to interweave his stories of hockey in unlikely places with funny and eyebrow-raising stories about places and players back in Canada. As a bonus, readers are also treated to some striking observations about the game, its fans, and the testosterone, the profanity, and the moments of grace that enrich it.
This volume sets out the results of a detailed programme of non-intrusive geophysical survey conducted across hillforts of Dorset (UK), generating detailed subsurface maps of archaeological features, in the hope of better resolving the phasing, form and internal structure of these iconic sites.
A centuries-old belief system is put to the test as two prominent authors examine and debate the subject of Calvinism from opposing viewpoints. James White, author of The Potter's Freedom, takes the Calvinist position. Dave Hunt, author of What Love Is This, opposes him. The exchange is lively and at times intense as these two articulate men wrestle over what the Scriptures tell us about God's sovereignty and man's free will. This thought-provoking, challenging book provides potent responses to the most frequently asked questions about Calvinism. Is God free to love anyone He wants? Do you have any choice in your own salvation? It’s time to find out. Calvinism has been a topic of intense discussion for centuries. In this lively debate, two passionate thinkers take opposing sides, providing valuable responses to the most frequently asked questions about Calvinism. Only you can decide where you stand on questions that determine how you think about your salvation. Story Behind the Book The subject of Calvinism has been hotly debated for many years, and now two prominent authors and researchers will debate this controversial topic in a book debate. This project came about when Mr. Hunt wrote What Love is This- Calvinism’s Misrepresentation of God. Mr. Hunt was challenged by many on the Calvinist bench and he eventually agreed to do a debate in a book format. The books purpose is to get you to think and come to your own conclusions.
Just in time, Dave Barry supplies the wholly original, much needed history and guide to the new American politics and its three capitals, Washington, D.C., Austin, and South Florida. No surprise: it's hilarious. Understanding the urgent need for a deeply thoughtful balanced book to explain our national political process, Dave Barry has not even come close. Though he himself has covered many campaigns, run for President several times, and run for cover at the rainy inauguration of George W. Bush (the man will spare nothing for his art) Barry has instead outdone himself. Below the Beltway includes Barry's stirring account of how the United States was born, including his version of a properly rewritten Declaration (When in the course of human events it behooves us, the people, not to ask "What can our country do for us, anyway?" but rather whether we have anything to fear except fear itself...) and a revised Constitution (Section II: The House of Representatives shall be composed of people who own at least two dark suits and have not been indicted recently.). Dave also cracks the income tax code, explains the growth(s) of government, congressional hearing difficulties, and the persistent rumors of the influence of capital in the Capitol. Among other civic contributions, his tour of Washington, D.C., should end school class trips forever.
Part one of this work thoroughly documents the many instances of Biblical prophecy fulfilled within Scripture as well as in history outside of the Bible. Part two contains discourses on the many miracles in Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments, while challenging the naturalist explanations or atheist refutations. Part three documents the many instances of mercy bestowed upon repentant sinners. The design of the book is to prove the omniscience, omnipotence, and forgiveness of our God.
With more than four decades of experience in ministry, Rev. Dave Heney has created a proven method that offers you the confidence and skills you need to serve as Jesus served. In Luke 10 Leadership, Heney shares his four-step, bible-based plan for effective parish ministry. He builds on four simple directives from Jesus found in Luke’s gospel and shows you how to build trusting relationships, embrace the culture of your parish, tend to the wounded, and speak the Good News in ways that your flock can understand. In Luke 10:5-9, Jesus instructs seventy-two of his disciples how to go about their ministry. He tells them to: speak peace; eat and drink whatever is set before them; cure the sick; and announce to the people that the kingdom is at hand. Rev. Dave Heney, a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, translates these biblical instructions into a primer for today’s ministry leaders. Heney breaks Jesus’ teaching into four foundational pastoral skills: building trusting relationships understanding the local culture tending to the wounded speaking the Good News in language that fits the local culture Heney shows leaders—clergy and lay, paid and volunteer—how to get started in a new leadership position or give an existing role a new direction. He offers practical tips for growing leadership skills and implementing pastoral strategies in areas such as communication, planning, organization, and change. Leadership in Catholic parishes varies greatly from place to place. But no matter what your particular setting is—whether you are just beginning your ministry or starting out in a new place—this primer of pastoral skills and strategies offers simple, challenging, and transformative lessons for you.
Cardinal Newman stated "I am not a theologian" many times in his letters. In the strict "academic" or "scholarly" sense, indeed he was not. Yet in another broader sense, he certainly was one. In any event, he wrote exquisitely on theology. His personal letters were "popular" and non-technical. In effect, here he becomes a catechist and apologist. Scholars write to and for other scholars, whereas Catholic catechists, apologists, and evangelists try to reach the masses (and Catholics) with the good news of the glorious fullness of the Catholic Christian faith. Moreover, in Cardinal Newman's writing we find extraordinary prose: a feast of 19th century eloquent English style; and we encounter a saintly man. My goal is to create almost a "systematic theology" from Cardinal Newman, by use of many topical categories. This volume may be of particular usefulness for possible converts, as well as Catholics seeking to revive an uncertain or tentative personal Catholic faith. There is much precious treasure here.
A controversial psychological examination of how soldiers’ willingness to kill has been encouraged and exploited to the detriment of contemporary civilian society. Psychologist and US Army Ranger Dave Grossman writes that the vast majority of soldiers are loath to pull the trigger in battle. Unfortunately, modern armies, using Pavlovian and operant conditioning, have developed sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. The mental cost for members of the military, as witnessed by the increase in post-traumatic stress, is devastating. The sociological cost for the rest of us is even worse: Contemporary civilian society, particularly the media, replicates the army’s conditioning techniques and, Grossman argues, is responsible for the rising rate of murder and violence, especially among the young. Drawing from interviews, personal accounts, and academic studies, On Killing is an important look at the techniques the military uses to overcome the powerful reluctance to kill, of how killing affects the soldier, and of the societal implications of escalating violence.
In this book the author attempts to move beyond merely identifying and substantiating OT allusions in Revelation to considering how the presence of OT allusions and echoes affects reading Rev. 21.1-22.5 and how the OT functions within the context of the entire work. The author concludes that a variety of semantic effects are evoked by the author's continuous intertextual appeal to the OT: new creation, new exodus, new Jerusalem, new covenant, bridge, new temple-priesthood, paradise restored and renewed, inclusion of the nations, prophetic legitimization. The numerous allusions function to shape the reader's perception of eschatological hope.

This volume consists of essays on 1) the distinction between the extreme radical Catholic reactionaries and mainstream "traditionalists," 2) the New (Pauline, Novus Ordo) Mass and its liturgical abuses, and 3) genuine, orthodox (not silly liberal) ecumenism. Radical Catholic reactionaries have been misled by various errors of the nature of what is called "rigorism." This recurring problem throughout Church history is seen in groups such as the Donatists, Montanists, Jansenists, and the Old Catholics who left the Church after Vatican I (1870): an error of thinking and out-of-whack perspective; an inability or unwillingness to think with the Mind of the Church, and a lack of charity. I love traditional Catholic worship, and the Tridentine Latin Mass, and have much affinity with "traditionalists." That's not what this book critiques. Rather, it criticizes fringe views that seek to "bash" the New Mass as profoundly "inauthentic" and inferior Catholic worship, and to dismiss Vatican II and true ecumenism.
Still broadcast in syndication across the U.S., the urbane British program "The Avengers" went through many changes in the course of its run. I want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, and who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it." John Henry Newman To raise up Catholics who "know their creed so well that they can give an account of it," John Henry Newman-the 19th century British Cardinal recently pronounced "Blessed" by Pope Benedict XVI-preached thousands of sermons, wrote scores of books, and published countless articles explaining our Catholic faith, with particular attention to the relationship between faith and reason. So prodigious was Cardinal Newman's output that only a few souls have read all he wrote. Yet so keen was his intellect-and so profound his love for our Lord - that even those who've read just a few pages have profited greatly, growing quickly in knowledge, understanding, and renewed faith in God. Now comes Dave Armstrong, himself drawn forth from Protestantism by the power of Cardinal Newman's words. Eager to share Newman's wisdom with others, Armstrong has mined from over forty of Cardinal Newman's works to produce substantive passages on more than 100 topics ranging from Angel(more...)

After being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, Dave Jiang started asking some hard questions: "Why Me?" "Was the universe just random, or was there reason and purpose behind it?" "What happens at death?" In the midst of five brain surgeries, radiation treatment and miraculous recovery after 28 days unconscious in a coma, he became motivated to search for something beyond human invention, control and understanding. Disregarding any and all preconceived notions and beliefs from the cultural and religious establishment, his search for empirical and historical evidence for an extraterrestrial deity led him to seek out Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Moslems, as well as scientists and intellectuals. Researching modern and historically verifiable ancient texts while undergoing myriad medical procedures and enduring increasing pain and impairments, something made itself apparent, leading to viable answers and meditations about "Blind Faith", divine sovereignty, the nature of suffering, eternal joy and punishment, and divine calling. Despite never graduating high school, Dave Jiang (barely) completed a Bachelor's Degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL after cramming a four-year degree into 6 years. After being employed in corporate America by IBM for 2 years, he spent the next 12 years on full-time campus staff with Campus Crusade for Christ. He is currently engaged in an independent ministry working among professional and civic organizations, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, art galleries, campuses, churches, and the occasional evangelistic stand-up comedy gig in bars and nightclubs. Interacting primarily among those disenchanted by the traditional church, he seeks to bring the abundant, pleasurable and joyful life promised by Jesus to those outside the religious establishment. Financed entirely through investments from organizations and individuals, and from holdings in the securities markets, God has granted him the freedom to pursue whatever ministry opportunities he sees God presenting and calling him to. Within the context of the Duthc civil religion and the diverse reactions to it by contemporary Catholic believers, this book investigates the extent to which religious attitudes, i.e. attituted towards God, Jesus, Spirit, salvation, and church, . have an effect on ethnocentrism
It has been my strong desire for some time now to revise my book in order to emphasize ecumenism and unity proportionately a lot more than in the first (2004) edition. I'm much more interested in finding common ground. I've also learned a thing or two about Orthodoxy over the past decade. I wanted this volume to be able to read by Orthodox and also Eastern Catholics, without having seizures or going into apoplectic fits (caused by my ignorance or overly polemical or biased writing). I exaggerate, of course, but perhaps not by much! Toward that end I have enlisted a very qualified Eastern Catholic friend to contribute significant portions to the revised edition: Fr. Deacon Daniel G. Dozier. The revision remains an apologetic for Catholicism and respectful critique of Orthodoxy, but now it also includes friendly ecumenical discussion and dialogue: feedback and input from the Eastern theological perspective. The overall tone, tenor, and goal is considerably different. Unity is stressed as much as apologetics.
This book was a long time coming. God had to take me through a lifetime of learning to prepare me for writing this book. There are three areas that He impressed upon me to write about. The first was to write about the life lessons that He has taught me. Things like how to be a better, more loving husband, how to take control of my life by planning for and accomplishing things, and how to use the gifts He has given me. The second was to make apologetics understandable. Apologetics is rationally and credibly defending the faith. I’ve has a passion for this ever since I’ve been a believer. Christianity is not just subjectively true. It’s objectively true. It is factually true and can be proven so beyond a reasonable doubt. The third was to highlight some of the lesser-known Christians and how God used them to make a difference in our world.
