Fans of Jon Land's Caitlin Strong series and of James Rollin's Seichan will identify with and devour the Danya Biton series. Capitalizing on a peaceful protest for Native American rights, a small, extremist militia swiftly seizes Alcatraz Island and holds more than 200 people hostage. Their demand: return all lands taken from Indigenous Peoples through broken treaties, or an armada of drones will render the San Francisco Bay Area a glowing ruin, uninhabitable for decades. Former Mossad assassin Danya Biton and her friend Toby Riddle are thrown headlong into the conflict. As the authorities debate the cost of acquiescing to the demands versus the loss of civilian lives, Danya—on the run from agencies on both sides of the Atlantic—offers the only hope for rescuing the hostages and preventing an unprecedented disaster... but she may have to sacrifice herself to save the others. Leonard Livingstone, the reluctant proprietor of a detoxification spa in Logy Bay Newfoundland, hosts German clients, world renown water enthusiasts. His son, Bud, is putting together a summer season of theatre, sponsored by local businesses. Unknown to Leonard and Bud, the German water enthusiasts are the center of a environmental uprising in Indonesia, managed out of Uruguay, watched by local police forces. The collection of narratives is assembled after the main event in the story, and include tales of the riches of Treasure Island and its connection to St. John's Newfoundland, the oldest city in North America, and Britain's first colony. The theft of the Irish Crown Jewels, and the discovery of an ancient Anglo-Saxon burial site are recounted. A comedic take on historical and science fiction, Troubles in the Colony explores the stories of Newfoundland.
Dave Barry makes his fiction debut with a ferociously funny novel of love and mayhem in south Florida. In the city of Coconut Grove, Florida, these things happen: A struggling adman named Eliot Arnold drives home from a meeting with the Client From Hell. His teenage son, Matt, fills a Squirtmaster 9000 for his turn at a high school game called Killer. Matt's intended victim, Jenny Herk, sits down in front of the TV with her mom for what she hopes will be a peaceful evening for once. Jenny's alcoholic and secretly embezzling stepfather, Arthur, emerges from the maid's room, angry at being rebuffed. Henry and Leonard, two hit men from New Jersey, pull up to the Herks' house for a real game of Killer, Arthur's embezzlement apparently not having been quite so secret to his employers after all. And a homeless man named Puggy settles down for the night in a treehouse just inside the Herks' yard. In a few minutes, a chain of events that will change the lives of each and every one of them will begin, and will leave some of them wiser, some of them deader, and some of them definitely looking for a new line of work. With a wicked wit, razor-sharp observations, rich characters, and a plot with more twists than the Inland Waterway, Dave Barry makes his debut a complete and utter triumph.

The rags-to-riches tale of one of the most remarkable figures in horse racing history. Readers will be left breathless at the edge of their seats by the amazing stories in You Bet Your Life: My Incredible Adventures in Horse Racing and Offshore Betting, the story of celebrated jockey Dave Stevenson. A runaway barn hand who became a legendary champion and hero in his native Canada, Stevenson's life is incomparable in its color, scope, and excitement. Throughout, You Bet Your Life is the ride of a lifetime. Its pages transport readers back in time to the golden era of American and Canadian horseracing greatness, traveling across North America and then around the world, all the while meeting an abundance of colorful characters: from legendary figures such as the Dowager Queen of England, Pablo Escobar, and champion thoroughbreds Secretariat and Seabiscuit, to charlatans and cheats, horses and owners, and jockeys and trainers that populated the underbelly and the pinnacle of the horseracing world. Relayed in stunning detail and brimming with emotional episodes, Stevenson's memories bring readers to the front lines, so close to the action that you'll swear you can feel the force of the filly's kick, taste the grit of the racetrack, hear the roar of the crowd, and smell the alluring perfume of wealthy women. Will Dave Stevenson's story enthrall and inspire you from its opening pages? You Bet Your Life it will.
Finally, Jackson Donne has it figured out. After leaving the private investigation business, he's looking toward the future — and getting married to Kate Ellison. Donne is focused on living the good life — planning the wedding, a big Hawaiian honeymoon — until he receives an anonymous email with a link and an old picture of him on the police force. Once Donne clicks the link, nothing else in his life matters. Donne sees a live-stream of the one thing he never expected. Six years ago, his fiancée, Jeanne Baker died in a car accident with a drunk driver. Or so Donne thought. He’s taken to a video of Jeanne bound to a chair, bruised and screaming, but very much alive. Donne starts to investigate, but quickly finds he’s lost most of his contacts over the years. The police hold a grudge going back to the days when he turned in his corrupt colleagues, and neither they nor the FBI are willing to believe a dead girl’s been kidnapped. Donne turns to former NARCO department partner Bill Martin — the only man to love Jeanne as much as he did — for help. And that decision could cost him everything.
The renowned instructor behind elite pros such as Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh shows you how to conquer the ten shots you fear the most. Some golfers stand over shots with so much fear in their hearts that they can't bear to swing their clubs. Others, filled with anxiety, butcher shots they might otherwise hit reasonably well. After conducting worldwide surveys to determine which shots golfers fear the most, master golf instructor Dave Pelz has focused his skilled research and development on creating a methodology and conditioning process proven to teach golfers how to conquer their top 10 most feared shots. The first book to use the "Golfer's Eye View(tm)"-a technique developed for Pelz by "hall of fame" golf photographer Leonard Kamsler-Dave Pelz's Golf without Fear features Pelz's signature combination of science and savvy. Coaching readers through their shots, Pelz offers a visual method of instruction, with close-up images of the problems that caused their fears, the solutions to those problems, and step-by-step instructions for how to execute those shots with confidence in the future. He retrains golfers to apply precise, clearly defined body positions and setups, in addition to specific techniques for the moment when contact with the ball occurs, making Dave Pelz's Golf without Fear a trove of score-saving lessons. With full-color photography throughout, this is a powerful course in making winners out of even your worst shots.

Hide in Plain Sight completes Buhle and Wagner's trilogy on the Hollywood blacklist. When the blacklistees were hounded out of Hollywood, some left for television where many worked on children's shows like "Rocky and Bullwinkle." A number wrote adult sitcoms such as The Donna Reed Show, and M*A*S*H while some of them ultimately returned to Hollywood and made great films such as Norma Rae, and Midnight Cowboy. This is a thoughtful look at the rising fear of communism in America and the aftermath of the horror that was the McCarthy period, from two expert historians of the blacklist period.

Brucelli and the Old Professor: Anatomy of a Miracle is a story of a dedicated couple, a classic blunder, and redemption set in a world of less than honorable legal professionals who become enwrapped in a baseball controversy. With a flick of the tongue, friction occurs, and the verbal spark leaps from alarm to tinder. The seemingly insignificant extinguishable verbal gaffe starts to grow. Fueled by mean-spirited antagonists and pervasive hot air, the unwise avowal escalates into a fully-fledged fire. Eventually, it consumes the initiator of the spark. On October 28, 2004, at 9:46 a.m., eastern daylight time, a living legal allstar comes close to committing occupational suicide. This novel is a combination of courage and integrity, overcoming the intimidation of an icon and his brainless followers. Although a baseball issue promulgates the plot, Brucelli and the Old Professor: Anatomy of a Miracle is not a sports novel per se.
Going beyond a biography, this text uses the life of blacklisted Hollywood writer and director Abraham Lincoln Polonsky to help us understand the relationship between art and politics in American culture and to uncover the effects of US anticommunism and anti-Semitism.
The world needs great individual educational changemakers capable of identifying problems and creating bold, scalable solutions. But the world also needs Dream Teams —groups of talented administrators, teachers, staff, students, and community members who are passionate about making things better for kids, believe that school-based change is the means to this end, and are willing to roll up their sleeves and work together to achieve it. This book is for Dream Teams in the making. In it, rising global education leaders Aaron Tait and Dave Faulkner share the models and methods of 10 brilliant leadership teams at urban, suburban, and rural schools in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Informed by these successes, the authors provide specific, sometimes audacious advice for navigating what they call the Change Leader Journey: how to move from Dream Team assembly and problem analysis all the way through to solution generation, piloting, promotion, and evaluation. Innovative educators come in all forms, and they require lots of options. Here, you'll find a collection of practical ideas and tools designed to fuel transformational leadership without sacrificing instructional excellence or anyone's sanity. Whether your team is a group of fearless rebels, more cautious types, or somewhere in between, Tait and Faulkner's flexible approach can help you figure out where you want your school to go, build a more collaborative and creative culture, and generate the solutions that best serve your students.
Biography of Ernie Goodman, a Detroit lawyer and political activist who played a key role in social justice cases. In a working life that spanned half a century, Ernie Goodman was one of the nation's preeminent defense attorneys for workers and the militant poor. His remarkable career put him at the center of the struggle for social justice in the twentieth century, from the sit-down strikes of the 1930s to the Red Scare of the 1950s to the freedom struggles, anti-war demonstrations, and ghetto rebellions of the 1960s and 1970s. The Color of Law: Ernie Goodman, Detroit, and the Struggle for Labor and Civil Rights traces Goodman's journey through these tumultuous events and highlights the many moments when changing perceptions of social justice clashed with legal precedent. Authors Steve Babson, Dave Riddle, and David Elsila tell Goodman's life story, beginning with his formative years as the son of immigrant parents in Detroit's Jewish ghetto, to his early ambitions as a corporate lawyer, and his conversion to socialism and labor law during the Great Depression. From Detroit to Mississippi, Goodman saw police and other officials giving the "color of law" to actions that stifled freedom of speech and nullified the rights of workers and minorities. The authors highlight Goodman's landmark cases in defense of labor and civil rights and examine the complex relationships he developed along the way with individuals like Supreme Court Justice and former Michigan governor Frank Murphy, UAW president Walter Reuther, Detroit mayor Coleman Young, and congressman George Crockett. Drawing from a rich collection of letters, oral histories, court records, and press accounts, the authors re-create the compelling story of Goodman's life. The Color of Law demonstrates that the abuse of power is non-partisan and that individuals who oppose injustice can change the course of events.

I’m a product of the American divorce rate. Nothing tragic. Nothing obscure or awful. Just good old-fashioned family failure. Then in my early adulthood, I found myself repeating the very same home I grew up in and assimilating into American statistics myself. In response to the wreckage, I began driving. When I thought I was at the end of it all, I discovered that I was really at the beginning of a grand adventure. I was off to find my father. And finding my father would lead to finding security. Security is perhaps one of our greatest needs as humans. Romantics say love is our greatest need. Philosophers say knowledge is our greatest needs. Mystics say transcendence is our greatest need. But what if security is in-fact our greatest need? Who would we be as a people, as a church, and as a nation if we felt a sense of security in our lives? Not superficial security where life is predictable, but a sacred security. One that’s firm in our identity. Affirmation by a father is something we all need, whether we want to admit it or not. Not having my father around in my most critical adolescent years created an insecurity in me that I eventually transferred over to my faith. I even transferred it over leaders and other authorities in my life. A breeding ground for insecurity. It wasn’t until I found the secrets of beauty and adversity, and found the Father in the wild, that I became healthy and whole. This journey is an introspective look at faith and freedom, and finding a father, with crisis as a catalyst. It’s a journey across the wilderness of America, through prairies and mountains, across National Parks and along interstates, and ultimately the highways of the heart and mind.
