Guys, It’s Time to Get Naked! Adam and Eve started their marriage completely naked in the Garden of Eden. How about you and your wife? How intimate is your relationship? How much true nakedness—spiritual, emotional, and physical—exists in your marriage? Through their popular book and podcast The Naked Marriage, marriage teachers Dave & Ashley Willis have asked those questions, guiding couples deeper into vulnerable relationships built on faith, friendship, and mutual fulfillment. (Improved sex lives are just icing on the cake.) They wrote this devotional series—with separate editions for husbands and wives—to accompany The Naked Marriage. Over the course of seven powerful days, these stories, Scriptures, and revealing questions will help you “undress” your marriage vows. The more you understand these powerful promises, the further you’ll progress into God’s plan for your marriage: a life-giving relationship without secrets, masks, or barriers. * Be sure to grab the wife’s edition for your spouse!

Since 2005, Voice of Witness has illuminated contemporary human rights crises through its oral history book series. Founded by Dave Eggers, Lola Vollen, and Mimi Lok, Voice of Witness amplifies the voices of people impacted by—and fighting against—injustice. Voice of Witness’s work is driven by the transformative power of the story, and by a strong belief that social justice cannot be achieved without deep listening and learning from those marginalized by systems of oppression. This selection of narratives from the organization’s first ten years includes stories from occupied Palestine, Sudan, Chicago public housing, and the US carceral system, among many others. Together, they form an astonishing record of human rights issues in the early twenty-first century; a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of incredible odds; and an opportunity to better understand the world we live in through connection and a participatory vision of history.
Protestants (especially Reformed Protestants, or Calvinists) often assert that St. Augustine's views were closer to theirs than to the present-day Catholic Church. My aim is to systematically document St. Augustine's advocacy of positions that historic Protestantism has expressly rejected, and (conversely) detail his opposition to some doctrines or beliefs that it has (generally speaking) espoused. Quotations are drawn from 44 separate works of St. Augustine, arranged under 157 topics, and also arranged chronologically within topics, insofar as that can be determined. This helps to clarify any development in Augustine's views. Editorial input is kept to an absolute minimum: confined to an occasional bracketed clarification (usually a contextual matter or reference) or briefly stated fact considered to be indispensable in understanding some aspect of the quotation. I'm delighted to pass along to readers a ""capsulized version"" of St. Augustine's wonderful and eloquent theological writing.
My aim is to make it easier to quickly find biblical answers to theological questions that are of perennial importance. I presuppose the inspiration and infallibility of the Bible, and this book is for Christians who accept those notions. This volume provides Bible passages (usually one verse; sometimes a few together) that are (in my opinion) the very best "answers" to a large number of one-sentence questions. The format might remind one of the popular TV game show "Jeopardy," where the contestants are given a piece of information and have to come up with a question that it is the "answer" to. While compiling it, I looked at Bible passages and devised questions that the passages "answered." The book contains 18 broad categories and 200 numbered subcategories. The marvelous treasures in the Bible await all of us: inspired revelation from the Mind of God.
In Tudor times the ‘common sort’ were no different from us, laughing together, mocking each other and sharing bawdy tales in tavern yards, marketplaces and anywhere else that people came together. These stories were later collected in the cheap print of the period, and professional storyteller Dave Tonge has sought them out to assemble here. Within these pages hide smooth-talking tricksters, lusty knaves, wayward youths and stories of the eternal struggle to wear the breeches in the family, for a sometimes coarse but often comic telling of the everyday ups and downs in Tudor life.
Many revisions of the King James (Authorized) Bible of 1611 exist; even revisions of revisions have been done (ASV to NASB / RV to RSV / KJV to NKJV, etc.). The present work is a similar "hybrid." I don't know Greek, and am therefore not qualified in the slightest to actually translate (and did not translate a single word). But I know English (as a professional author) and know the Bible (as a longtime Christian apologist) very well. This work, accordingly, isn't technically a new translation at all, but rather a "selection" or collection of what I personally felt were the best renderings that maintained the KJV style as much as possible without the archaisms. When I updated the olde English language, I sought to maintain a "high" Victorian 18th-19th century style of (British) English. This NT "selects" from the following six translations (all in the public domain): 1) KJV (1611; rev. 1769), 2) Rheims (1582; rev. 1750), 3) Young's Literal (1887), 4) Weymouth (1903), 5) 20th Century (1904), 6) Moffatt (1922).
Over 2,000 Bible Proofs for Catholic Truths! Contrary to what many believe, Catholic doctrine is not made up by popes and theologians but is derived entirely from revelation, as this book shows. In it, veteran Catholic apologist Dave Armstrong gathers in one place countless passages from Holy Scripture that point directly to the teachings of the Catholic Church. This galaxy of more than 2,000 passages from the Bible is overwhelming evidence that on every side Catholic teachings are confirmed by Scripture. Indeed, these passages show that the Catholic Church has a more complete grasp of the meaning of Scripture than those who try to use Scripture to discredit the Church. That’s because Catholic teaching is based not on selective readings of Scripture but on understanding and veneration of the whole Bible in its organic interrelatedness. Catholic doctrines are not distilled from single passages quoted in isolation or out of context; they arise from an encounter with the whole of Scripture, wherein passages on the same theme are read in light of each other, so that together they lead the mind to a complete picture of the truth. That’s why Dave Armstrong has gathered here under 115 thematic headings all the passages in Scripture relating to key Catholic doctrines. This arrangement makes it easy for readers to consider systematically — as the Church does — all the parts of the Bible that relate to any particular Catholic belief. Whether you’re a Protestant seeking to understand Catholicism, or a Catholic wanting to defend Catholic teaching or learn more about its biblical basis, this is the one book you need.

In Search of the Truth is a bold and straightforward study of what we believe to be the most important subjects today. Satanic attack and efforts to intervene adds to that importance. As the reader will find from the very first sentence, no subject it off limits, and every effort is made to give as complete an answer as God will help us supply. The writing style of Rev. Church is an intended effort to use normal and common language we're all familiar with; and as He's said "I'll break every rule or tradition, grammar or punctuation if it will help those who read this understand the lesson we're trying to teach". One of the more important answers we give in this work is to the question of "why does it seem that God is delaying the rapture?" When we see this answer, and what it means to those who won't be allowed to go in rapture: the fear and burden so many of us carry, is going to be changed into an even greater effort to glorify and honor our God!

An inspirational, uplifting, and life-affirming memoir about passion, resilience and living life to the fullest, from Dr. Dave Williams, one of Canada’s most accomplished astronauts. I had dreamt about becoming an astronaut from the time I watched Alan Shepard launch on the first American sub-orbital flight on May 5, 1961. Eleven days before my seventh birthday, I committed to a new goal: one day, I would fly in outer space. Dr. Dave has led the sort of life that most people only dream of. He has set records for spacewalking. He has lived undersea for weeks at a time. He has saved lives as an emergency doctor, launched into the stratosphere twice, and performed surgery in zero gravity. But if you ask him how he became so accomplished, he’ll say: “I’m just a curious kid from Saskatchewan.” Curious indeed. Dr. Dave never lost his desire to explore nor his fascination with the world. Whether he was exploring the woods behind his childhood home or floating in space at the end of the Canadarm, Dave tried to see every moment of his life as filled with beauty and meaning. He learned to scuba dive at only twelve years old, became a doctor despite academic struggles as an undergraduate, and overcame stiff odds and fierce competition to join the ranks of the astronauts he had idolized as a child. There were setbacks and challenges along the way—the loss of friends in the Columbia disaster, a cancer diagnosis that nearly prevented him from returning to space—but through it all, Dave never lost sight of his goal. And when he finally had the chance to fly among the stars, he came to realize that although the destination can be spectacular, it’s the journey that truly matters. In Defying Limits, Dave shares the events that have defined his life, showing us that whether we’re gravity-defying astronauts or earth-bound terrestrials, we can all live an infinite, fulfilled life by relishing the value and importance of each moment. The greatest fear that we all face is not the fear of dying, but the fear of never having lived. Each of us is greater than we believe. And, together, we can exceed our limits to soar farther and higher than we ever imagined.

Medieval historians have for some time recognized the significance of personal naming processes and patterns for the illumination of social relations such as kinship and spiritual kinship or godparenthood. Increasingly, they are employing the investigation of personal naming (anthroponymy) as part of their elucidation of cultural change-attempting, through changes in patterns of personal naming, to discern cultural transitions and transformations. Recent coordinated research on the European continent has produced major collaborative discussion of the cultural implications of naming in France, the Iberian peninsular, and 'Italy'. The fruits of new research into the 'Germanic' lands have also richly enhanced our understanding of cultural change there. So it is predicated that a new trans-European culture arose in the centuries about and after the year 1000. Omitted from this coordinated understanding of the arrival of a new European cultural tradition (as it came to persist) is the British archipelago. We are, however, far from devoid of scholarly examination of the culture of personal naming in the British Isles. An older generation of linguists produced a basic foundation, although it has not remained free of some criticism. Subsequently, several scholars have independently advanced the interpretive analysis (Clark, Fellows Jensen, Insley, and McClure). At one level, then, this book attempts a synthesis of that previous, highly valuable, but diffuse, research, to make it more widely known, understood and accessible. At another level, nonetheless, it engages with what has become a prevailing narrative of cultural change in England after the Norman Conquest: the rapid transformation of English naming (and culture) through the assimilation of a new, dominant, extraneous influence. By reinserting the detail and complexity, it is hoped to demonstrate that far from a single uniform (homologous) culture, there existed residual, even resistant, and 'regional', cultures. The account, it is hoped, presents a cohesive, new narrative of the cultural implications of personal naming in England, whilst also addressing important issues of gender, politics, and social organization.

Watch Dave Mearns and Brian Thorne′s video on YouTube to hear the story behind the writing of the Third Edition, and to find out about Dave′s time spent under the stewardship of Carl Rogers. SAGE celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Counselling in Action series in November 2008. To view the video - click here ---------------------------------------------------------- REVIEWS `Thank you for revising the bible! I am a tutor on a so-called "integrative counselling course" and I thoroughly endorse the idea that Carl Rogers would have welcomed this honesty and new interpretatation of his model. Your SAGE book is indeed a bible and I have repeatedly recommended it to the students′ - lecturer, YouTube `For students and those new to person-centred counselling, there is a clear exposition of person-centred theory. For experienced practitioners, there are new and challenging theoretical developments within the person-centred approach. If new to counselling, this is a ′must have′. If wondering whether to invest in this edition when there is a already a copy of the earlier one on the shelf, the challenge of the new theoretical material is persuasive, but if that is not enough, then the updated practice guidance, the practical questions and answers, and the comprehensive references must make this new edition another bestseller′ - Therapy Today ---------------------------------------------------------- It is now almost twenty years since the first edition of Person-Centred Counselling in Action appeared. In that time this SAGE bestseller has maintained enormous popularity with trainees and practitioners and has achieved world-wide acclaim. This substantially revised Third Edition provides an excellent introduction to the theory and practice of person-centred counselling while incorporating exciting new developments in the approach. Dave Mearns and Brian Thorne have preserved the compelling and accessible style of its predecessors. At the same time they provoke reflection on many of the key issues which concern not only person-centred practitioners but those across the whole counselling and psychotherapy field. New to this edition is: - the inclusion of "relational depth", a key development for the person-centred approach and counselling generally - extended discussion of the counsellor′s use of self - a new chapter containing the authors′ answers to frequently-asked-questions - the inclusion of diversity issues covering religion, gender and sexual orientation - further reading suggestions. Much has changed in the person-centred orientation since the death of Carl Rogers in 1987. Not only have new schools of thought emerged with different emphases and therapeutic possibilities but the authors of this book have themselves been responsible for significant advances in key areas of person-centred theory and practice. These developments are fully reflected in the revised text. Continuing to offer a clear exposition of the theory and practice of the approach, Person-Centred Counselling in Action, Third Edition will be invaluable for those embarking on their first stages of training. Well-established practitioners and even seasoned scholars will continue to find much to interest and stimulate them. Praise for previous editions: `An important book... a most sophisticated text. Mearns and Thorne have written a book for all counsellors and psychotherapists. The reader will be left both grateful and hungry for more′ - British Journal of Guidance and Counselling `The discussion of empathy, acceptance and congruence is central and should be required reading for all trainees working to understand the richness of these core concepts... outstanding′ - Counselling and Psychotherapy, The Journal of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy `Without doubt the clearest description of the person-centred approach to counselling that I have read, apart from Carl Rogers′ own writings. I felt that I had got to know both Dave Mearns and Brian Thorne through their offering the reader their own congruence and I found this aspect of the book at times quite moving′ - Social Work Today `Gives real insight into person-centred counselling... This is a gentle book; an absolute delight to read (I couldn′t put it down) as it held me in the realm of my own feelings. I would like to thank both authors for sharing so much of their intimate selves. I recommend this book to trainee counsellors, trained counsellors, clients and those involved in the helping professions. It is a book that has influenced me and that I would not want to be without′ - BPS Counselling Psychology Review `Excellent "all rounder" for practitioners to learn and build upon counselling skills with young offenders′ - lecturer, Guidance, Youth and Youth Justice, Nottingham Trent University `An excellent text. Student friendly and covering all main issues′ - lecturer, Psychology Swansea Institute of HE `Stimulates a re-exploration of the doctor-patient relationship′ - British Medical Journal `I felt understood by this book!′ - Ann Weiser, PCA Letter Network `This book could very sensibly be placed on the reading lists of all counselling trainers and trainees.... this is the most informative and useful book I have read in a long time and I have no doubt that if Carl Rogers were still alive today, he would not only agree but also acknowledge experiencing some envy′ - Changes `The skilful conveying of tenderness and building of trust are well explained and described with lots of case study examples′ - Guidance Matters `Excellent book - a useful and practical way to underpin current emphasis on humanism in nursing′ - lecturer, West London NHS Mental Health Trust `Continues to be an excellent, easy introduction but with depth. Deserves to be a bestseller!′ - lecturer, Preston College `The book conveys the profound respect for the person, for his/her autonomy and uniqueness, which is inherent in the Rogerian approach′ - British Journal of Medical Psychology `A marvelous book; highly recommended. Someone has finally written an easily accessible book about the theory and practice - mostly practice - of the kind of therapy that makes the most sense to many focusers. Hurrah!′ - The Focusing Connection `Truly allows the reader to enter the world of the person-centered counsellor′ - Contemporary Psychology `Person Centred Counselling in Action, written by Dave Mearns and Brian Thorne was originally published in 1988 about a year after the death of Carl Rogers. It has helped to maintain and stimulate interest in this approach and has become a best-seller in the Counselling in Action series′ - The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy
Durable marriages are built on our responses to defining moments--those experiences, events, and decisions that determine (and sometimes alter) our whole direction. But not all of those moments are going to be big. In fact, big moments are actually made up of many smaller moments, and it's how we react in those everyday, seemingly insignificant moments that determines how we'll act in the big, life-transforming ones. This 31-day devotional is designed to help you and your spouse prepare for those moments. Grounded in Scripture, each devotion includes a brief point of reflection, along with an application or a prayer designed to show you how to meet Jesus in every moment of your marriage, no matter how long you've been married.
Defining momentswe all have them. All of us can look back and remember moments when events occurred and decisions were made that drastically altered the course of our lives. Defining moments shape our perception of the world, and they become major forces in defining who we are and what we are capable of. They become the scales by which we measure our worth. Our reality is anchored in our interpretation of those moments, and how we respond to them often determines how we respond in life. Mankinds fall from glory in the garden of Eden was a catastrophic event of epic proportions, one of the great defining moments in human history. It altered the course of humanity and redefined who we were at our core. Before the Fall, we were sons and daughters in paradise; after the Fall, we were orphans and strangers in exile. Our interpretation of that one event has shaped our self-identity. And our interpretation of Gods words and actions in the midst of the event has shaped our perception of who he is and the nature of his heart toward us. Redefined chronicles a journey back to the time of the orphaning of the human heart. It dares to reinterpret the story in the light of the smile of Abba God. It offers the hope that if Adams darkest moment can be redefined, then our darkest moments can as well. But the ramifications are huge. For the life of Christ and his work on the cross will never look the same to us again. And our excuses for remaining powerless against the enemy will be lost forever.

As soon as the newspapers hit the streets on October 1, 1888, Elizabeth Stride became world renowned as the third victim of Jack the Ripper. Reportedly, Stride was killed only an hour before fellow victim Catherine Eddowes, becoming a key player in the legendary "double event" of Jack the Ripper's brief but notorious killing career. This book tells the complete life story of Elisabeth Gustafsdotter, beginning with her birth in Sweden during the winter of 1843. The author describes Stride's reported "habitual drunkenness," her brief career as a prostitute, and the public aftermath of her untimely death. Period photos and sketches are included throughout the work, along with several appendices and an index.
The success stories speak for themselves in this book from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial health. Ramsey debunks the many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. "Don't even consider keeping up with the Joneses," Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. "They're broke!" The Total Money Makeover isn't theory. It works every single time. It works because it is simple. It works because it gets to the heart of the money problems: you. This 3rd edition of The Total Money Makeover includes a fresh cover design, all new personal success stories, and naysayers, and more.

Based on exclusive, fresh reporting, the thrilling, definitive inside story of the pursuit, capture, and killing of legendary South Boston mob boss, James “Whitey” Bulger, detailing as never before his years on the run, how he evaded capture, and his brutal murder in prison. For the first time, Boston reporters Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge draw on exclusive interviews and exhaustive investigative reportage to tell the complete story of Whitey Bulger, one of the most notorious crime bosses in American history—alongside Al “Scarface” Capone and Vito Genovese—and a longtime FBI informant. The leader of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang and #1 on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, Bulger was indicted for nineteen counts of murder, racketeering, narcotics distribution, and extortion. But it was his sixteen-year flight from justice on the eve of his arrest that made him a legend and exposed deep corruption within the FBI. While other accounts have examined Bulger’s crimes, this remarkable chronicle tells the story of his life on the run, his capture, and his eventual murder inside one of America’s most dangerous prisons—”Misery Mountain”—in 2018. Interweaving the perspectives of Bulger, his family and cohorts, and law enforcement, Hunting Whitey explains how this dangerous criminal evaded capture for nearly two decades and shines a spotlight on the dedicated detectives, federal agents, and prosecutors involved in bringing him to justice. It is also a fascinating, detailed portrait of both Bulger’s trial and his time in prison—including shocking new details about his death at Misery Mountain less than twenty-four hours after his arrival. Granted access to exclusive prison letters and interviews with dozens of people connected to the case on both sides, Sherman and Wedge offer a trove of fascinating new stories and create an incomparable portrait of one of the most infamous criminals in American history. Hunting Whitey includes an 8-page photo insert.
