The Rayl family of Lincoln, Indiana, is a family of deep Christian faith. They are also in love with basketball because of the father, Roger Rayl, who still plays pickup games against high school players in his late forties and writes about it constantly as a sports editor for the local newspaper. Roger has a great love for basketball and has passed it on to his son, Randy, who is a still-developing player and a big dreamer. Roger teaches Randy his famous hook shot, which later enables him to move from a manager to a varsity player. Roger eventually begins doing freelance writing for a national publication, which allows him to travel and cover major national tournaments. The town of Lincoln, ironically, is a baseball town with many state titles and a great coach. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is also a very important part of this book.
The County Avifaunas are a growing series of books, each of which gives details of the status and range of every species on the county list, with a detailed breakdown of rarity records. Each has introductory sections describing the county's ecology and habitats, climate, ornithological history and conservation record. This new avifauna covers Leicestershire and neighbouring Rutland, an area with a particularly strong birding tradition - the Leicestershire & Rutland Ornithological Society is one of the largest county bird clubs in Britain. The region holds some of England's most important inland reservoirs, including the largest, Rutland Water. This massive lake holds some 10,000 wintering birds of a variety of species each year, and has an impressive rarity list as well as some of England's few breeding Ospreys. The county also has important woodlands, gull roosts and river habitats. Rutland Water is the home of the British Birdwatching Fair, the most important trade fair in the birding calendar.
This is an examination of the crucial formative period of Chinese attitudes toward nuclear weapons, the immediate post-Hiroshima/Nagasaki period and the Korean War. It also provides an account of US actions and attitudes during this period and China's response.
I attended my 55th high school reunion in July of 2012 and was inspired to write "Home Town Memories of Grinnell, Iowa." This work is not intended to be an all inclusive, comprehensive, scholarly history with a preoccupation for exact dates, etc. It is simply a personal history, my recollections of the old home town during a limited period in the town's history the 40's, 50's and 60's. I have written in my own way using a flow of words that came to me as I wrote. In a town of 8,000 9,000, as Grinnell was in those days - you eventually get to know and have some contact along the way with most people. My intent was to communicate in simple, straight forward terms and was not concerned about presenting it as "a triumph in English language grammar.

This hilarious, irreverent, and profoundly honest memoir explores our cultural obsession with social media and dares to ask: Who is the real "you" and what is the story you tell others? At age 26, Dave Cicirelli found himself at a crossroads. While his friends on Facebook appeared to have lives of nonstop accomplishments, his early adulthood felt disappointingly routine. So one October morning, Dave announced on Facebook that he was dropping everything and heading west. Many thought him brave--or crazy. No one guessed he was lying. "Fake Dave" set off on a wild adventure, toilet-papering an Amish horse and buggy, freight-hopping with a farmer's daughter, and being kidnapped by a religious cult. But the online prank quickly became a social experiment. People began connecting over his journey, and some were inspired to change their own lives. But as Fake Dave's popularity grew, the real Dave became increasingly isolated, struggling with the implications of his secret. Clever, funny, and surprisingly candid, FAKEBOOK is a true memoir of our digital age. It explores what the old ideas of reputation and relationships mean in our new world of constant connection and ultimately asks: How do you draw the line between your virtual self and who you really are? And can you discover yourself on a journey that never took place?
Building A Better World is a classic resource manual for anyone who wants to work for change in our world. Dave Andrews urges us to act on our growing sense of distress about the way the world is and to take simple, radical-yet-practical steps to explore the possibility of building a new world out of the ruins of the old - creating safe sustainable spaces, where everyone is accepted as person in their own right, where people are respected for both their similarities and their differences, where there is sense of responsibility for welfare of each person, where every person has the right to participate in the decisions that impact on their lives, and where communities are committed to doing justice to the most marginalised and disadvantaged in society. As you would expect from a landmark do-it-yourself handbook written by a practitioner for practitioners, Building A Better World is filled from cover to cover with personal stories, professional tips, inspiring quotes, empowering anecdotes and lots of practice wisdom about what works and what doesn’t work in overcoming apathy, mobilising activity, subverting bureaucracies, and utilizing first order and second order strategies in the struggle to bring about a truly “PEACE”ful world - characterised by “P”articipatory politics and “E”quitable economics with “A”ppropriate technologies in “C”onscientized communities, exercising “E”nvironmental responsibilities.
An in-depth look at the Washington Post from a Pulitzer Prize–nominated Post veteran. Morning Miracle definitively answers the question “Do newspapers still matter?” with a resounding yes. What The Kingdom and the Power did for the New York Times, Morning Miracle will do for the Washington Post. A reporter for more than forty years, Dave Kindred takes you inside the heart of the legendary newspaper and offers a unique opportunity to see what it really takes to produce world-class journalism every day. Granted unprecedented access to every nook and cranny of the paper, including candid exchanges with its most celebrated journalists, such as Bob Woodward, Sally Quinn, David Broder, and former executive editor Ben Bradlee (who gave the book its title), Kindred provides a no-holds-barred look at the twenty-first-century newsroom. As it becomes more difficult to maintain journalistic integrity, stay relevant in the age of blogs, and meet Wall Street’s demands for profits, the newspaper—more than any other medium—also shoulders the tremendous responsibility of acting as a watchdog for democracy. Perhaps no one sums up the overwhelming challenges that face the Post and its power to endure better than the author himself: “It is still a miracle that you can put 700 overcaffeinated misfits in a newsroom, on deadline, adrenaline running, secrets to spill, and before midnight a messenger delivers a smoking-hot city edition to Don Graham’s manse in Georgetown.”
Countdown to Super Bowl tells the whole story of the game of the century, written by the man who followed every movement of the Jets from the first kick-off of the season, who lived, breathed, and agonized with them for the ten nerve-tingling days before the Colts went down to defeat in the Super Bowl. Here, by Dave Anderson of the New York Times, is the play-by-play, moment-by-moment saga of how Super Joe Namath and the Jets made good Namath’s boast that they would humble the NFL and vanquish the invincible Colts. This book provides all the color, the action, and the behind-the-scenes drama of the greatest upset in football history. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of that miraculous New York Jets Super Bowl win, fans can relive the stories and moments that led up to that victory. “My experience working with Skyhorse is always a positive collaboration. The editors are first-rate professionals, and my books receive top-shelf treatment. I truly appreciate our working relationship and hope it continues for years to come.” –David Fischer, author
They come by darkness, usually in the early morning hours. Sometimes they wake you, and force you to ask if they were real. Sometimes they let you sleep, but leave you unsettled in the daylight. But they do exist, in some far-flung corner of your subconscious. Some have the simple innocence of youth, naive and idealistic. But some have forsaken that guise for a darker view. You created them, from a seed of thought. They are not like you, but they are you, the part of you that never shows in the living quarters of your existence. They are the people upstairs.
The Sherlock Holmes FAQ is a one-stop guide to over a century's worth of mystery, mayhem, and most of all, deduction. Digging deep inside the manifold worlds of Sherlock Holmes, the FAQ is a dramatic and detailed digest of the Baker Street sleuth in all of his many guises, as TV and radio star, movie phenomenon, and, of course, literary giant. Chapters investigate his predecessors and his successors, and discuss the influence that Holmes has had not only on other writers, but on real-life police procedures as well. The London that he perambulated in deerstalker and cloak is laid bare, plus the life and other fascinations of Holmes' creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, are mapped out in all their foggy, darkened atmosphere. We meet giant hounds and fearful foes, common crooks and misdirected souls. Ghosts appear in these pages, and vampires, too – and more puzzles, conundrums, and mysteries than any mortal detective could ever hope to solve. But Holmes, as we shall see, was no mere mortal. And Sherlock Holmes FAQ is the story of his immortality.

In a world facing multiple existential crises, music might be seen as little more than a distraction. However, in this synthesis of ideas developed over a decade, a timely re-appraisal of the potential of musicing for human flourishing is presented, emphasising its role in the history of human evolution alongside its potential as a resource for sustainable development. A holistic philosophy of music is outlined which recognises the complex web of meaning which spreads across complementary musical dimensions of performance and participation, whilst emphasising the ‘paramusical’ benefits which arise from both. Highlighting the notion that the social bonds which arise from musicing share much of the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment and love, musicing is presented as a resource with the potential for facilitating ethical human connection. The humanistic values which are thereby materialised during musicing – love, reciprocity and justice – form the experiential grounds for inhabiting alternative social realities. The book addresses how such a holistic philosophy of music might be implemented in practice, drawing on the author’s professional praxis as a performer, educator, community musician, composer and researcher, in particular their experience of musician education at Sage Gateshead, Royal College of Music and Trinity-Laban Conservatoire in the UK.
We are caught up in the cycle of so-called "holy wars." In The Jihad of Jesus, Dave Andrews argues that while this inter-communal conflict is endemic, it is not inevitable. Depending on our understanding, our religions can be either a source of escalating conflict or a resource for overcoming inter-communal conflict; and for our religions to be a resource for overcoming conflict, we need to understand the heart of all true religion as open-hearted compassionate spirituality. In the light of an open-hearted compassionate spirituality, we can reclaim the word "jihad" from extremists who have (mis)appropriated it as a call to "holy war," and reframe it, in truly Qur'anic terms, as a "sacred nonviolent struggle for justice"; and we can reconsider Jesus, as he is in the Gospels, not as a poster boy for Christians fighting crusades against Muslims, but as "a strong-but-gentle Messianic figure" who can bring Christians and Muslims together. As this book shows, many Christians and Muslims have found Isa (Jesus) and the Bismillah (celebrating the mercy, grace, and compassion of God) as common ground upon which they can stand and work for the common good. The Jihad of Jesus is a handbook for reconciliation and action: a do-it-yourself guide for all Christians and Muslims who want to move beyond the "clash of civilizations," join the jihad of Jesus, and struggle for justice and peace nonviolently side by side.

The seashore has long been the subject of fascination and study - the Ancient Greek scholar Aristotle made observations and wrote about Mediterranean sea urchins. The considerable knowledge of what to eat and where it could be found has been passed down since prehistoric times by oral tradition in many societies - in Britain it is still unwise to eat shellfish in months without an 'r' in them. Over the last three hundred years or so we have seen the formalization of science and this of course has touched intertidal ecology. Linnaeus classified specimens collected from the seashore and many common species (Patella vulgata L. , Mytilus edulis L. , Littorina littorea (L. )) bear his imprint because he formally described, named and catalogued them. Early natural historians described zonation patterns in the first part of the 19th century (Audouin and Milne-Edwards, 1832), and the Victorians became avid admirers and collectors of shore animals and plants with the advent of the new fashion of seaside holidays (Gosse, 1856; Kingsley, 1856). As science became professionalized towards the end of the century, marine biologists took advantage of low tides to gain easy access to marine life for taxonomic work and classical studies of functional morphology. The first serious studies of the ecology of the shore were made at this time (e. g.
Rapidly disappearing bison in the late 1800s prompted progressive thinkers to call for the preservation of wild lands and wildlife in North America. Following a legendary hunt for the last wild bison in central Montana, Dr. William Hornady sought to immortalize the West's most iconic species. Activists like Theodore Roosevelt rose to the call, initiating a restoration plan that seemed almost incomprehensible in that era. Follow the journey from the first animals bred at the Bronx Zoo to today's National Bison Range. Glenn Plumb, retired National Park Service chief wildlife biologist, and Keith Aune, retired Wildlife Conservation Society director of bison programs, detail Roosevelt's conservation legacy and the landmark efforts of many others.
Remember when you were a kid, and you used to go round to a friend's house to see if they were playing? Well, as adults we're not supposed to do that. Which is a shame... because Dave Gorman likes playing. He REALLY likes games. So he knocked on the biggest door you could ever imagine - the internet - and asked 76,000 people if they fancied a game. This is the story of what happened next. Dave was up for anything and gamely played them at whatever they chose. He played some classics - Monopoly, Scrabble, dominoes and cribbage. He played many games he'd never heard of before - Khet, Kubb, Tikal or Smite anyone? He played board games and physical games. He's thrown sticks, balls, frisbees and darts. He's rolled dice and he's drawn cards. From Liverpool to Hampstead and from Croydon to Nottingham, Dave travelled the length and breadth of Britain meeting strangers in strange places - their homes, at work, in the back rooms of pubs - and getting some hardcore game action. From casual players to serious game geeks, from the rank amateur to the world champion, he discovered a nation of gamers more than happy to welcome him into their midst. He's travelled all around the country and met all sorts of people - and it turns out us Brits are a competitive bunch. And it seems that playing games can teach you a lot about what makes the British tick. Of course, Dave hasn't been keeping score. Much.
Dave Evans makes a convincing case that practice learning occupies a central role in the education and training of the caring professions. In doing so, he affirms the activities of many service agency staff involved in practice teaching and assessment and offers them clear models and illustrative examples to aid their development. He also explores ways in which practice learning and assessment can be effectively developed in academic settings.

This new collection of essays and reviews from “one of the most gifted film critics in America” offers rare insight into the cinema of the 1970s and 80s (Roger Ebert). Following the first collection of Dave Kehr’s criticism, When Movies Mattered, this volume features fifty more reviews and essays drawn from the archives of both the Chicago Reader and Chicago magazine from 1974 to 1986. This collection offers in-depth analyses of films that are among Kehr’s favorites, from the sobering Holocaust documentary Shoah to the raucous comedy Used Cars. But fans of Kehr’s work will be just as taken by his dissections of critically acclaimed films he found disappointing, including The Shining, Apocalypse Now, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Whether you’re a long-time reader or just discovering Dave Kehr, the insights in Movies That Mattered will enhance your appreciation of the movies you already love—and may even make you think twice about one or two you hated.

Draven knew that meeting Darcy would change his life! He fell desperately in love with her. The introduction of a mortal into the Toreador Clan, and more importantly into the Arikeland family, was going to spell big trouble. His father Acheron strongly disapproved but his sister Imperia and brother Drakkar posed a more dangerous situation. While dealing with family issues, Draven encountered treachery and deceit among those he trusted! First, his uncle Thorne, who tainted his vampiric blood with heroin, became weak and subject to manipulation by the local mafia figure, Don Chessia. He attempted to take over the Arikeland family Corporation and insinuate himself in the casino complex that it was constructing out in the Boston Harbor islands. In addition, his wife Darcy, the only woman he loved, violated the sanctity of their marriage and engaged in an affair with a neighbor. Tied up in all this was Dravenʼs blood donor of 20 years, Elliot Jackson, who just happened to be the current mayor for the city of Boston, who betrayed his benefactor. As the story unfolds it is replete with complicated twists and turns and an unexpected ending.
