Harry Alan Towers' reputation rests upon a corpus of 95 low-budget productions shot post-haste in every corner of the globe. He took an integral part, however, in the development of the protocols that now underpin much transnational film production and he must be regarded as a pioneer. Towers' slash and burn strategy focused on parasitic, back-to-back productions, funded by rights bundles that were pre-sold globally. This strategy was substantially derived from his early days in broadcasting wherein he acted as a go-between in the American and the British Commonwealth markets. Though he became adept at procuring funds from pariah regimes and black market economies, primarily he continued to act as a broker bringing together American equity investment and European finance under the auspices of EC co-production agreements. He was also quick to exploit the burgeoning niche markets becoming available in the wake of technological developments and government initiatives.

Joshua Beck, son of a Virginia plantation owner and his barn slave, flees west in 1821 after his mother dies and he's accused by his white half-brother of killing his father. He ends up in Missouri, where he volunteers for a large trapping party heading north on two keel boats. After saving the Colonel from drowning, he accompanies the land party to barter for horses with the Arikara. When a trapper tries to sneak into the village, the tribe assaults the party with arrows and bullets. While many trappers are killed, Beck saves his friend Moses. He must cross the Missouri River by himself to survive and heads north on foot. Starving, he's rescued by three Crows, Sun Walker and two cousins. After rejoining the land party that the keel boat dropped on shore far above the Arikara, they begin trapping. The Captain is mauled by a grizzly. Beck and Antoine, son of a trapper and a Mandan, search for a comrade and must escape from Pawnee pretending to be friendly. When they climb a tree to hide and sleep, a panther attacks Beck. Although woozy from a poisoned arrow that pierced his butt, he manages to win the battle. Antoine believes Beck will soon be dead and abandons him. By surviving on berries and a bison calf killed by wolves, Beck grows stronger only to meet a party of Sioux. They leave him alone due to his courage proven by the lacerations from the panther's paws. After losing his pants and hatchet to a flooded creek, he's accosted by five Gros Ventre of the prairie. They send a young brave after him in a contest. Jumping into a stream to escape, he's saved by Sun Walker, Storm Cloud and White Bear. Again, they return him to his party. Meanwhile, his half-brother Langford takes over the plantation. More interested in the local tavern and women, he murders an escort's husband, flees, and leaves the bankrupt estate to his mother and twin sister. He heads to Missouri where his uncle, an army Colonel, is stationed. After defeating the Arikara, Colonel Pennington assigns his corporal nephew to build a fort on the site of the former village. Langford soon makes a deal with the British Hudson Bay Company, fierce competitors of American trapping companies, to send furs down to New Orleans and across the Atlantic to quench the European thirst for beaver fur hats. Beck spends a summer at the Crow village where Sun Walker and her cousins live. He learns their language and customs and joins a horse raid against the Blackfoot. Sun Walker, who was brutally raped as a youth by the Blackfoot and has no interest in men, begins to grow fond of Beck, as he's been of her ever since their first meeting. But Beck feels he has a duty to help his land party reach their destination. Back with them, he continues volunteering for dangerous missions as they struggle against fire, malaria, black wolves and hostile tribes on their way to the Mandan villages and Fort Unity. Yet his biggest challenge arises when he unwittingly stops at Langford's fort.

Few if any 20th century warships were more justly acclaimed than the destroyers of the U.S. Navy's Fletcher class. Admired as they were for their advanced and rakish design, it was their record as workhorses of the Pacific War that placed them among the most battle-tested and successful fighting ships of all time. This title describes the Fletchers and their Allen M. Sumnerand Gearing-class derivatives, their machinery, armament, and construction, with a listing of all 343 ships by hull number and builder. It features an operational history of the 287 ships commissioned during World War II, which traces the evolution of night surface action tactics in the Solomon Islands and the parallel development of the Combat Information Center; the drive across the Pacific and liberation of the Philippines with tables showing the rapid introduction of new squadrons; and the radar pickets' climactic stand against kamikaze aircraft at Okinawa. With summaries of losses and decorations and specially commissioned artwork, this is a definitive book on the wartime US destroyer classes.

In 1936, the Baseball Hall of Fame was established to honor the legends of the sport. The first inductees were some of the greatest names of the dugout, including Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. Less than ten years later, in 1945, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted its first members. The Soccer Hall of Fame was established in 1950, followed by the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959, and the Football Hall of Fame in 1963. In all, more than 1,400 inductees—players, teams, and behind the scenes personnel—have been enshrined in these five halls of fame. The Sports Hall of Fame Encyclopedia is a comprehensive listing of each inductee elected into one or more of these major sports halls of fame. From Hank Aaron to Fred Zollner, this book contains biographical information, sport and position(s) played, and career statistics (when applicable) of each of the more than 1,400 honorees. The book also includes specific appendixes for each shrine, in which inductees are listed alphabetically and by year of induction. Also included are appendixes briefly describing the history of each hall of fame.
Hearts of Darkness is the story of a generation's coming of age through the experiences of its three most atypical pop stars. James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Cat Stevens could never have been considered your typical late-sixties songwriters – self-absorbed and self-composed, all three eschewed the traditional means of delivering their songs, instead turning its process inward. The result was a body of work that stands among the most profoundly personal art ever to translate into an international language, and a sequence of songs – from “Sweet Baby James” and “Carolina in My Mind ” to “Jamaica Say You Will” and “These Days ” to “Peace Train” and “Wild World” – that remain archetypes not only of what the critics called the singer-songwriter movement, but of the human condition itself. Author Dave Thompson, himself a legend among rock biographers, takes on his subjects with his usual brio and candor, leaving no stone unturned in his quest to shine a light on the dark side of this profoundly earnest era in popular music. Penetrating, pointed, and laced with vivid insight and detail, Hearts of Darkness is the story of rock when it no longer felt the need to roll.
Millions of Canadians crave a good mental challenge, and in order to feed their hunger many turn to the daily crossword puzzle in their local newspaper. Often, however, before they even get to 1-Across, they must stop thinking "in Canadian" and shift cultural gears. It is a sad reality that Canada just doesn't figure highly in what is undoubtedly one of our favourite pastimes: solving the daily crossword. The crosswords in this book contain plenty of references to this country: its heroes and rogues, its geography, sports, history, arts, - its "Canadian-ness." Here the solver might discover a Knowlton, a Gzowski, an Iqaluit, or maybe even a Come By Chance. Our Canadian spelling is recognised as well, in words such as "colour" and "centre", and there is also a sprinkling of French, in keeping with the bilingual nature of this land. These puzzles appeal to a broad range of solvers, from the dabbler at testing the waters to the seasoned crossword pro looking for a serious cranial workout. Many puzzles are themed and titled. Other, perhaps more challenging puzzles are themeless. While the puzzles vary in difficulty and style, they share one critical thing. They'll make you Think Canadian!
The Child Ballads are a series of over 300 traditional ballads from England and Scotland that, along with their American variants, were anthologized by folklorist Francis James Child in the nineteenth century. An Evolving Tradition is the story of the Child Ballads—the world’s best-known and most highly regarded repository of traditional English folk songs, and the wellspring for approximately 10,000 recordings over the last century, from obscure musicological archives to classic releases from Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Led Zeppelin. Drawing on interviews with numerous scholars and musicians, author Dave Thompson explains what a ballad is, outlines their dominant themes, and recounts how these ballads survived to become a mainstay of field recordings made by Cecil Sharp, Alan Lomax, and others as they traveled the English and American countryside in search of old songs. Thompson traverses the entire spectrum of rock, pop, folk, roots, experimental music, industrial, and goth to reveal the remarkable legacy and incalculable influence of the Child Ballads on all manner of modern music.
Hide in Plain Sight offers a powerful examination of the effects of Hollywood's blacklist era, taking up the question of how blacklistees fared after they were driven out of the mainstream. A good number entered careers in television, with many finding work in children's and family programs, writing for shows like Rocky and Bullwinkle, Lassie, and Flipper. Many also wrote adult sitcoms such as Hogan's Heroes,The Donna Reed Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, M*A*S*H, Maude, and All in the Family. Ultimately, many returned to Hollywood in the sixties and seventies to work creatively on films that contained a dose of the radical politics found in communism, films that influenced the creative outburst of that decade. The list of impressive films from the survivors of HUAC includes Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, and Midnight Cowboy. Hide in Plain Sight completes Paul Buhle and Dave Wagner's trilogy, which includes Tender Comrades (1998) and Radical Hollywood (2002). Together these books provide a thorough and disturbing portrait of the McCarthy era's impact on an important aspect of American culture and society.

Proverbs and the Formation of Character presses the wisdom of Proverbs into active duty in the trenches of everyday life and puts the principles of character formation in working clothes. The wisdom Proverbs describes is not designed to master life's challenges but to learn to manage them and adapt. In learning to adapt, individuals grow and mature spiritually. Relying on solid biblical scholarship, Dave Bland brings to the fore the neglected sentence literature in Proverbs 10-29 and the vital resources they contribute to the process of character formation. Contrary to popular opinion, the book of Proverbs, even though addressed to youth, is not a book solely for the young, but for those of all ages who desire to continue to grow personally, as well as in their relationship with others and God. The wise in the book of Proverbs employ a plethora of resources to help train up young and old alike to grow into the character of God. Among others, these resources include the value of interacting with others, a healthy understanding of conflict, an appropriate perspective on wealth, a new appreciation for and reliance on the role of the neglected proverb in the education process, and the vital role of family and the faith community.

An adopted post war baby boomer from a Sussex council estate, Dave Spencer was born at a time when reminders of World War II still littered the 50s landscape. Nature was still bountiful, but the landed gentry were selling our heritage before conservation had teeth. His was the first television generation: weaned on the Flower Pot Men, he grew up in an increasingly commercial and libertarian society, which exploded into the colourful 60s. Ill at ease amongst former public school boys, a lurch to the left saw him taking several unsuitable apprenticeships, before a rude awakening led a confrontation with the law and a taste of life on the road. Dave took a ferry across the Mersey and a hippy hike from Cornwall to Manchester, then a final fling in Sussex led to an encounter with a longhaired milkman, in a story which mixes religion, drugs, politics and passion.

Big ideas in the mathematics curriculum for older school students, especially those that are hard to learn and hard to teach, are covered in this book. It will be a first port of call for research about teaching big ideas for students from 9-19 and also has implications for a wider range of students. These are the ideas that really matter, that students get stuck on, and that can be obstacles to future learning. It shows how students learn, why they sometimes get things wrong, and the strengths and pitfalls of various teaching approaches. Contemporary high-profile topics like modelling are included. The authors are experienced teachers, researchers and mathematics educators, and many teachers and researchers have been involved in the thinking behind this book, funded by the Nuffield Foundation. An associated website, hosted by the Nuffield Foundation, summarises the key messages in the book and connects them to examples of classroom tasks that address important learning issues about particular mathematical ideas.

These are the guitars so famous that their names are often household words: B. B. King's Lucille, Eric Clapton's Blackie, Stevie Ray Vaughan's First Wife, Billy F Gibbons' Pearly Gates, Neil Young's Old Black, and many more. Here's the first-ever illustrated history of the actual guitars of the stars that made the music. Other best-selling guitar histories look at the rank-and-file models, but this book is unique in profiling the actual "star guitars"--the million-dollar babies, such as the 1968 Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix burned at Woodstock, which sold at Sotheby's auction house in 1993 for $1,300,000. Amateurs buy guitars to emulate the stars--Clapton's Strat, Slash's Les Paul--and this book explains the stars' modifications, thus showing how others can recreate those famous tones.
(FAQ). The Twilight Zone is among the most beloved shows in American television history, a pioneering fantasy behemoth that bridged the cultural gap between the 1950s and 1960s with thought-provoking mystery, mind-boggling theorems, and occasionally outright horror. The Twilight Zone FAQ takes the reader back to that halcyon era, looking back on the show and its impact as a force for societal change, via reflections on the manifold topics and controversies that the show took on from the space race to the Red Menace, from paranoia to madness and beyond. Dave Thompson traces the history of the show from its earliest flowering in the mind of then-unknown Rod Serling through its slow birth, shaky beginning, and breathless five-season run and he shows how it became the blueprint for so much of the fantasy television that has followed. Chapters deal with the comic books, novels, and many other spin-offs, including the movie, the TV revamps, and even the amusement park ride. In addition, this FAQ offers a full guide to every episode, providing details on the cast and music and pinpointing both the best and the worst of the series, all adding up to a brightly opinionated time machine that catapults the reader back to the true golden age of American television.
