Dave Andrews’s latest book, To Right Every Wrong, is the last in the Dave Andrews Legacy Series. It is a funny, sad, brutally honest retrospective, reflecting on what it has meant for him and his family to seek to live a lifetime dedicated to love and justice. The reflections in this book, subtitled The Making and Unmaking of One Improbable Minor Prophet, come in three parts—the personal, the prophetical, and the paradoxical. The personal part explores Andrews’s experience of the radical, compassionate spirituality that he shares with wife, Angie, and which has shaped their way of life as a family in community with marginalized and disadvantaged groups of people. The prophetical part explores Andrews’s embrace of the “strange,” “crazy,” “improbable” call he felt to be a prophet, which he has sought to flesh out in classic prophetic roles—as an interrogator, a protester, a practitioner, and an inspirator—in contemporary prophetic contexts characterized by poverty and violence. The paradoxical part explores Andrews’s making and unmaking as a minor prophet, critically constructing and deconstructing the more confrontational aspects of the prophetic roles he has played in order to be able to practice more sensitive pastoral care.

The biography of Danny Blanchflower In these days of player' agents, corporate hospitality, share options and television bonuses, it's often the football, the glory and the romance of the game, that gets overlooked. Back in the 1950s and 1960s there was no footballer in love with his trade than Danny Blanchflower. An elegant and inspirational midfield force, he captained the Spurs 1961 Double-winning side and led Northern Ireland, against the odds, to the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup. Equally eloquent off the field, he was no stranger to controversy, writing about the game with a great clarity and passion, and working tirelessly as an innovator, forever trying to transform football as a spectacle for player and fan alike. Drawing on extensive interviews with family, friends and colleagues (including Jackie Blanchflower, Sir Stanley Matthews, Johnny Haynes, Geoff Hurst, Pat Jennings and Derek Dougan), Dave Bowler skilfully recounts the story of one of football's greatest thinkers and iconoclasts.

At the London Olympics in 2012 Team GB achieved a third place finish in the medals table. A key factor in this achievement was the high standard of contemporary British sports coaching. But how has British sports coaching transitioned from the amateur to the professional, and what can the hitherto under-explored history of sports coaching in Britain tell us about both the early history of sport and about contemporary coaching practice? A History of Sports Coaching in Britain is the first book to attempt to examine the history of British sports coaching, from its amateur roots in the deep nineteenth century to the high performance, high status professional coaching cultures of today. The book draws on original primary source material, including the lost coaching lives of key individuals in British coaching, to trace the development of coaching in Britain. It assesses the continuing impact of the nineteenth-century amateur ethos throughout the twentieth century, and includes important comparisons with developments in international coaching, particularly in North America and the Eastern Bloc. The book also explores the politicisation of sport and the complicated interplay between politics and coaching practice, and illuminates the origins of the structures, organisations and philosophies that surround performance sport in Britain today. This book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the history of sport, sports coaching, sports development, or the relationships between sport and wider society.
New, updated edition of an important and timely critique of Anti-Jewish sentiment on the left. There is a sickness at the heart of left-wing British politics, and in recent years it has silently spread, becoming ever more malignant. Today, it seems hard to believe that until the 1980s, the British left was broadly pro-Israel. And while Jeremy Corbyn's leadership may have thrown a harsher spotlight on the crisis, it is by no means a recent phenomenon. The widening gulf between British Jews and the anti-Israel left, now allying itself with Islamist extremists who demand Israel's destruction, did not happen overnight or by chance: political activists made it happen. This book reveals who they were, why they chose Palestine and how they sold their cause to the left. Based on new academic research, Dave Rich's nuanced and thoughtful guide brings fresh insight to an increasingly fraught debate. As the question becomes more urgent than ever, this new, fully updated edition, taking in events since 2016, provides an essential guide to the left's increasingly controversial 'Jewish problem'.
When you stay in one job for a quarter century, it helps to have good reasons for doing so. Here are a few: Heloise, Arianna Huffington, Gary Larson ("The Far Side"), Lynn Johnston ("For Better or For Worse"), Mort Walker ("Beetle Bailey"), Abigail Van Buren ("Dear Abby"), Ann Landers, Hillary Clinton, Walter Cronkite, Martha Stewart, Coretta Scott King, Herblock, Charles Schulz ("Peanuts"), Stan Lee ("Spider-Man"), Garry Trudeau ("Doonesbury"), and Bill Watterson ("Calvin and Hobbes"). The part-humorous Comic (and Column) Confessional chronicles Astor's twenty-five years as newspaper-syndication reporter for Editor & Publisher magazine with candor - and anecdotes about famous people such as those named above. The important period in media history covered shows how the digital revolution, media mergers, and the shrinking newspaper business changed journalism forever.
An adopted post war baby boomer from a Sussex council estate, Dave Spencer was born at a time when reminders of World War II still littered the 50s landscape. Nature was still bountiful, but the landed gentry were selling our heritage before conservation had teeth. His was the first television generation: weaned on the Flower Pot Men, he grew up in an increasingly commercial and libertarian society, which exploded into the colourful 60s. Ill at ease amongst former public school boys, a lurch to the left saw him taking several unsuitable apprenticeships, before a rude awakening led a confrontation with the law and a taste of life on the road. Dave took a ferry across the Mersey and a hippy hike from Cornwall to Manchester, then a final fling in Sussex led to an encounter with a longhaired milkman, in a story which mixes religion, drugs, politics and passion.

Wounded Eagle is a fictional account of actual events that took place during the US-USSR Cold War of the late 1970s. The title was a top secret code word used to describe situations which reduced or eliminated advance warning of an aircraft attack on the US Capital. Such warnings are provided based on a network of long range radar sensors deployed on or near the US coastline. Digital data from these sensors are combined and integrated into overall aircraft status pictures covering hundreds of miles over the ocean and an equal distance inland. The FAA and NORAD use these data jointly for real-time air route traffic control and early warning of intrusion or attack of the homeland. The Fort Lee AFS Direction Center in central Virginia provided data to NORAD to accomplish those functions for the Mid-Atlantic States including Washington, DC. At 0430 hours (EDT) on Monday, 8 August 1977, the NORAD Command Post within the Cheyenne Mountain Complex was notified that an air conditioning failure in the Fort Lee AFS Direction Center had caused severe damage to their air defense computers. The loss of all data from Fort Lee forced the NORAD Command Director to declare Wounded Eagle.
Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic is a complete re-evaluation of the loss of Titanic based on evidence that has come to light since the discovery of the wreck in 1985. This collective undertaking is compiled by eleven of the world's foremost Titanic researchers – experts who have spent many years examining the wealth of information that has arisen since 1912. Following the basic layout of the 1912 Wreck Commission Report, this modern report provides fascinating insights into the ship itself, the American and British inquiries, the passengers and crew, the fateful journey and ice warnings received, the damage and sinking, rescue of survivors, the circumstances in connection with the SS Californian and SS Mount Temple, and the aftermath and ramifications that followed the disaster. The book seeks to answer controversial questions, such as whether steerage passengers were detained behind gates, and also reveals the names and aliases of all passengers and crew who sailed on Titanic's maiden voyage. Containing the most extensively referenced chronology of the voyage ever assembled and featuring a wealth of explanatory charts and diagrams, as well as archive photographs, this comprehensive volume is the definitive 'go-to' reference book for this ill-fated ship.

JT is the fictional memoir of an emotionally troubled, yet wickedly likable, amateur vigilante. With a complex and quirky mixture of psychological suspense, romance, heartache, and wry humor, JT brazenly illustrates some of the horrid consequences of childhood abuse and trauma in adult survivors. It also invites us to reconsider an important and deceptively complicated question: What is justice? WARNING: This book contains explicit adult themes, including vulgar language, borderline-pornographic sexuality, graphic depictions of violence, irresponsible drug use, and a grandmother who gives her middle finger to the world. Caveat emptor.

Mills dominated life in Carrboro during the first half of the 20th century. Closure of the last mill in the early 1960s spawned a cultural renaissance, stimulated by the arrival in 1978 of French artist Jacques Menarche, whose ArtSchool became today's ArtsCenter. The opening of the Farmers Market and the Weaver Street Market has contributed enormously to the vitality of Carrboro. The community has changed from a blue-collar town to one of artists and professionals. To acknowledge this change, the town is working to establish an Arts and Creativity District, extending west from the Chapel Hill boundary. A new ArtsCenter is planned for the performance, education, and coordination of activities in the area. This book documents Carrboro's exciting journey from the past into the future.
This new collection of essays and reviews from “one of the most gifted film critics in America” offers rare insight into the cinema of the 1970s and 80s (Roger Ebert). Following the first collection of Dave Kehr’s criticism, When Movies Mattered, this volume features fifty more reviews and essays drawn from the archives of both the Chicago Reader and Chicago magazine from 1974 to 1986. This collection offers in-depth analyses of films that are among Kehr’s favorites, from the sobering Holocaust documentary Shoah to the raucous comedy Used Cars. But fans of Kehr’s work will be just as taken by his dissections of critically acclaimed films he found disappointing, including The Shining, Apocalypse Now, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Whether you’re a long-time reader or just discovering Dave Kehr, the insights in Movies That Mattered will enhance your appreciation of the movies you already love—and may even make you think twice about one or two you hated.
Medieval historians have for some time recognized the significance of personal naming processes and patterns for the illumination of social relations such as kinship and spiritual kinship or godparenthood. Increasingly, they are employing the investigation of personal naming (anthroponymy) as part of their elucidation of cultural change-attempting, through changes in patterns of personal naming, to discern cultural transitions and transformations. Recent coordinated research on the European continent has produced major collaborative discussion of the cultural implications of naming in France, the Iberian peninsular, and 'Italy'. The fruits of new research into the 'Germanic' lands have also richly enhanced our understanding of cultural change there. So it is predicated that a new trans-European culture arose in the centuries about and after the year 1000. Omitted from this coordinated understanding of the arrival of a new European cultural tradition (as it came to persist) is the British archipelago. We are, however, far from devoid of scholarly examination of the culture of personal naming in the British Isles. An older generation of linguists produced a basic foundation, although it has not remained free of some criticism. Subsequently, several scholars have independently advanced the interpretive analysis (Clark, Fellows Jensen, Insley, and McClure). At one level, then, this book attempts a synthesis of that previous, highly valuable, but diffuse, research, to make it more widely known, understood and accessible. At another level, nonetheless, it engages with what has become a prevailing narrative of cultural change in England after the Norman Conquest: the rapid transformation of English naming (and culture) through the assimilation of a new, dominant, extraneous influence. By reinserting the detail and complexity, it is hoped to demonstrate that far from a single uniform (homologous) culture, there existed residual, even resistant, and 'regional', cultures. The account, it is hoped, presents a cohesive, new narrative of the cultural implications of personal naming in England, whilst also addressing important issues of gender, politics, and social organization.
Dave "Ask Dave" Smith, retired Chief Archivist of The Walt Disney Company, has been fielding Disney trivia questions for over 30 years. And now, the most intriguing of those questions and answers have been compiled in this secret-filled book!
“Covering many of the biggest names and greatest events in sports, it’s a wonderful collection of yarns and reminiscences, told in Perk’s inimitable style” (Postmedia News). Dave Perkins was once told by a bluntly helpful university admissions officer: “You don’t have the looks for TV or the voice for radio. You should go into print.” Which he did, first at the Globe and Mail, and then for thirty-six well-traveled years at the Toronto Star. In Fun and Games, Perkins recounts hysterical, revealing, and sometimes embarrassing personal stories from almost every sport and many major championships. After forty years of encountering a myriad of athletes, fans, team managers, and owners, Perkins offers unique observations on the Blue Jays and Raptors, fifty-eight major championships’ worth of golf, ten Olympic Games, football, hockey, boxing, horse racing, and more. Learn why Tiger Woods asked Perkins if he was nuts, why he detected Forrest Gump in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and why Super Bowl week is the worst week of the year. Perkins exposes the mistakes he made in both thought and word—once, when intending to type “the shot ran down the goalie’s leg,” he used an “i” instead of an “o”—and to this day, he has never found a sacred cow that didn’t deserve a barbecue. “Few can spin a yarn with the wit and clever turns of phrase that Perky can.” —Shi Davidi, Sportsnet “Anyone who has ever spoken to Dave Perkins, or read Dave Perkins, remembers his voice. This book is a delightful way to experience it all again, through the wise, funny man’s eyes.” —Bruce Arthur, Toronto Star sports columnist
The Nephalim is a story about how religion can go very wrong, but with a twist. In this tale it’s the angels who seem to be misled and, because of the teachings of a newer cleric in their midst, have split their numbers. Some are in favour of an outright conquest of earth, while others oppose such an action. Those in favour quote a prophesy giving free access to, and control over earth, and move to speed things along. Those opposed will protect man as best they can. This is a story of man and angel working side by side to oppose a powerful force that would oppress mankind.

Face-to-face communication is quickly becoming a lost art in this age of e-mail, texting and voicemail. But ultimately, when it comes to engaging an audience or making a compelling sales presentation, business is still driven by personal communication. High technology sets the stage, but speaking face-to-face seals the deal. Lack of communicative ability plagues many corporations, and the professionals that rise to the top are overwhelming those that develop communication approaches that achieve results. But, communicating with influence takes work and requires constant attention. This text will assist you in understanding types of communication, explain how successful communication takes place, and suggest ways of improving communication.
Remember when you were a kid, and you used to go round to a friend's house to see if they were playing? Well, as adults we're not supposed to do that. Which is a shame... because Dave Gorman likes playing. He REALLY likes games. So he knocked on the biggest door you could ever imagine - the internet - and asked 76,000 people if they fancied a game. This is the story of what happened next. Dave was up for anything and gamely played them at whatever they chose. He played some classics - Monopoly, Scrabble, dominoes and cribbage. He played many games he'd never heard of before - Khet, Kubb, Tikal or Smite anyone? He played board games and physical games. He's thrown sticks, balls, frisbees and darts. He's rolled dice and he's drawn cards. From Liverpool to Hampstead and from Croydon to Nottingham, Dave travelled the length and breadth of Britain meeting strangers in strange places - their homes, at work, in the back rooms of pubs - and getting some hardcore game action. From casual players to serious game geeks, from the rank amateur to the world champion, he discovered a nation of gamers more than happy to welcome him into their midst. He's travelled all around the country and met all sorts of people - and it turns out us Brits are a competitive bunch. And it seems that playing games can teach you a lot about what makes the British tick. Of course, Dave hasn't been keeping score. Much.
A quarter-Canadian from Cleveland explores his roots--and melts your face with joy. Most American children are taught that their country is the "best." But this idea never stuck with Dave Hill, despite being born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His grandfather, you see, was from Canada. And every Sunday at dinner he'd remind Dave and anyone else within earshot that it was in fact Canada, this magical and mysterious land just across the mighty Lake Erie, that was the "best." So while Dave's peers kept busy with football and baseball, Dave got into hockey, developed a preference for Canadian bacon, and was well-versed in the Canadian healthcare system by age nine (okay, the last one is not true). In later years he even visited Canada a couple of times. And then, inspired by a publisher's payment of several hundred dollars (Canadian) in cash, he travelled all over the country, reconnecting with his heritage in such places as Montreal, Moose Jaw, Regina, Winnipeg, Merrickville and of course Clinton, Ontario, meeting a range of Canadians, touching things he probably shouldn't and having adventures too numerous and rich in detail to be done justice in this blurb. The result, he promises, is "the greatest Canada-based literary thrill ride of your lifetime.
Using a simple yet rigorous approach, Algebraic and Stochastic Coding Theory makes the subject of coding theory easy to understand for readers with a thorough knowledge of digital arithmetic, Boolean and modern algebra, and probability theory. It explains the underlying principles of coding theory and offers a clear, detailed description of each code. More advanced readers will appreciate its coverage of recent developments in coding theory and stochastic processes. After a brief review of coding history and Boolean algebra, the book introduces linear codes, including Hamming and Golay codes. It then examines codes based on the Galois field theory as well as their application in BCH and especially the Reed–Solomon codes that have been used for error correction of data transmissions in space missions. The major outlook in coding theory seems to be geared toward stochastic processes, and this book takes a bold step in this direction. As research focuses on error correction and recovery of erasures, the book discusses belief propagation and distributions. It examines the low-density parity-check and erasure codes that have opened up new approaches to improve wide-area network data transmission. It also describes modern codes, such as the Luby transform and Raptor codes, that are enabling new directions in high-speed transmission of very large data to multiple users. This robust, self-contained text fully explains coding problems, illustrating them with more than 200 examples. Combining theory and computational techniques, it will appeal not only to students but also to industry professionals, researchers, and academics in areas such as coding theory and signal and image processing.
What makes a powerful and results-driven Professional Learning Community (PLC)? The answer is collaborative work that expands the emphasis on student learning and leverages individual teacher efficacy into collective teacher efficacy. PLC+: Better Decisions and Greater Impact by Design calls for strong and effective PLCs plus—and that plus is YOU. Until now, the PLC movement has been focused almost exclusively on students and what they were or were not learning. But keeping student learning at the forefront requires that we also recognize the vital role that you play in the equation of teaching and learning. This means that PLCs must take on two additional challenges: maximizing your individual expertise, while harnessing the power of the collaborative expertise you can develop with your peers. PLC+ is grounded in four cross-cutting themes—a focus on equity of access and opportunity, high expectations for all students, a commitment to building individual self-efficacy and the collective efficacy of the professional learning community and effective team activation and facilitation to move from discussion to action. The PLC+ framework supports educators in considering five essential questions as they work together to improve student learning: Where are we going? Where are we now? How do we move learning forward? What did we learn today? Who benefited and who did not benefit? The PLC+ framework leads educators to question practices as well as outcomes. It broadens the focus on student learning to encompass educational equity and teaching efficacy, and, in doing so, it leads educators to plan and implement learning communities that maximize individual expertise while harnessing the power of collaborative efficacy.
The revised edition of the essential resource on macroeconometrics Structural Macroeconometrics provides a thorough overview and in-depth exploration of methodologies, models, and techniques used to analyze forces shaping national economies. In this thoroughly revised second edition, David DeJong and Chetan Dave emphasize time series econometrics and unite theoretical and empirical research, while taking into account important new advances in the field. The authors detail strategies for solving dynamic structural models and present the full range of methods for characterizing and evaluating empirical implications, including calibration exercises, method-of-moment procedures, and likelihood-based procedures, both classical and Bayesian. The authors look at recent strides that have been made to enhance numerical efficiency, consider the expanded applicability of dynamic factor models, and examine the use of alternative assumptions involving learning and rational inattention on the part of decision makers. The treatment of methodologies for obtaining nonlinear model representations has been expanded, and linear and nonlinear model representations are integrated throughout the text. The book offers a rich array of implementation algorithms, sample empirical applications, and supporting computer code. Structural Macroeconometrics is the ideal textbook for graduate students seeking an introduction to macroeconomics and econometrics, and for advanced students pursuing applied research in macroeconomics. The book's historical perspective, along with its broad presentation of alternative methodologies, makes it an indispensable resource for academics and professionals.

This anthology—the second of an initial two volume set—specifically covers Small Wars Journal writings on Al Qaeda and the Islamic State spanning the years 2012-2014. This set is meant to contribute to U.S. security debates focusing on radical Islamist global insurgency by collecting diverse SWJ essays into more easily accessible formats. Small Wars Journal has long been a leader in insurgency and counterinsurgency research and scholarship with an emphasis on practical applications and policy outcomes in furtherance of U.S. global and allied nation strategic interests. The site is able to lay claim to supporting the writings of many COIN (counterinsurgency) practitioners. This includes Dr. David Kilcullen whose early work dating from late 2004 “Countering Global Insurgency” helped to lay much of the conceptual basis focusing on this threat and as a result greatly helped to facilitate the writings that were later incorporated into these Al Qaeda and Islamic State focused anthologies. This volume is composed of sixty-six chapters divided into sections on a) radical Islamist OPFORs (opposition forces) and context and b) U.S.—allied policy and counter radical Islamist strategies. The work also contains a preface by Matt Begert, a foreword by Dr. Daveed Gartenstein-Ross and Bridget Moreng, an introduction, a postscript, an extensive notes section, and editor and contributor biographies on sixty-four individuals as well as an acronyms listing and an initial ‘About SWJ’ and foundation section.

Arnold: Schwarzenegger and the Movies" is the first comprehensive, in-depth book to examine one of modern cinema's most celebrated and divisive screen presences. Tracing Schwarzenegger's entire film career and life from teenage bodybuilder to Governor of California, Saunders blends close textual readings of the major films, including "Pumping Iron", "Conan the Barbarian", The "Terminator" series, "Twins" and "True Lies", with salient historical context and biographical detail, demonstrating continually the importance of broader social and political factors in defining Arnold's unique significance. Representing far more than just a muscular spectacle, Saunders argues, Schwarzenegger found powerful ideological and spiritual relevance to his age by embarking on a quest to restore collective faith in his adopted nation - and, moreover, by exploiting his own, mythic importance to a post-war America struggling to come to terms with its own contemporary narrative.

Complete with more than one hundred photographs, Golf Rx is a practical guide that brings the wisdom of one of America's leading sports-medicine authorities to golfers of any level or age.
World's Best Hobby is an unusual title for a memoir, which is exactly what this book is. It's my life in the fascinating hobby of Amateur Radio. Much of my professional life is spent producing documentary and reality programs for television (including more than a few about Ham Radio) where I learned that the purpose of a title is to attract an audience and if it was also true, all the better. The challenge with documentary films is to make them entertaining first and foremost, and informational if possible. I've tried very hard to make this book entertaining, and from feedback I've gotten (from Hams and wannabee Hams who found it posted online as I was writing it) I've succeeded, at least to some extent. I tried to make the book fun because Ham Radio is fun. And Ham Radio has more facets than a cheap diamond, as you'll discover as you dig into World's Best Hobby. Enjoy! PS. Let me know what you think of World's Best Hobby - especially if you like it. 73, Dave Bell, W6AQ
How to Win fills an important gap in the current leadership literature in that it gets 'down and dirty' with the very real issues that first-time managers face in today's workplace. These new leaders don't craft long-term strategies or issue inspiring missives to hundreds of eager troops. Neither do they testify before congressional committees nor appear as public spokespersons for this or that glamorous product. They are the managers who strive each day, often with limited resources, to meet the high production standards set by those in the c-suite. From how to manage relationships with direct reports (who used to be that manager's peers), to how to delegate tasks, to how to build effective teams and better manage one's time, How to Win takes the reader into the daily exchanges between a new manager and her veteran coach, as they explore the various roles all managers are expected to play."--Publisher's description.
In this book the author attempts to move beyond merely identifying and substantiating OT allusions in Revelation to considering how the presence of OT allusions and echoes affects reading Rev. 21.1-22.5 and how the OT functions within the context of the entire work. The author concludes that a variety of semantic effects are evoked by the author's continuous intertextual appeal to the OT: new creation, new exodus, new Jerusalem, new covenant, bridge, new temple-priesthood, paradise restored and renewed, inclusion of the nations, prophetic legitimization.
