No contemporary figure is more demonized than the Islamist foreign fighter who wages jihad around the world. Spreading violence, disregarding national borders, and rejecting secular norms, so-called jihadists seem opposed to universalism itself. Indigenous Cultural Translation is about the process that made it possible to film the 2011 Taiwanese blockbuster Seediq Bale in Seediq, an endangered indigenous language. Seediq Bale celebrates the headhunters who rebelled against or collaborated with the Japanese colonizers at or around a hill station called Musha starting on October 27, 1930, while this book celebrates the grandchildren of headhunters, rebels, and collaborators who translated the Mandarin-language screenplay into Seediq in central Taiwan nearly eighty years later. As a "thick description" of Seediq Bale, this book describes the translation process in detail, showing how the screenwriter included Mandarin translations of Seediq texts recorded during the Japanese era in his screenplay, and then how the Seediq translators backtranslated these texts into Seediq, changing them significantly. It argues that the translators made significant changes to these texts according to the consensus about traditional Seediq culture they have been building in modern Taiwan, and that this same consensus informs the interpretation of the Musha Incident and of Seediq culture that they articulated in their Mandarin-Seediq translation of the screenplay as a whole. The argument more generally is that in building cultural consensus, indigenous peoples like the Seediq are "translating" their traditions into alternative modernities in settler states around the world.
Recent advances in sensor technology and information processing afford a new flexibility in the design of waveforms for agile sensing. Sensors are now developed with the ability to dynamically choose their transmit or receive waveforms in order to optimize an objective cost function. This has exposed a new paradigm of significant performance improvements in active sensing: dynamic waveform adaptation to environment conditions, target structures, or information features. The manuscript provides a review of recent advances in waveform-agile sensing for target tracking applications. A dynamic waveform selection and configuration scheme is developed for two active sensors that track one or multiple mobile targets. A detailed description of two sequential Monte Carlo algorithms for agile tracking are presented, together with relevant Matlab code and simulation studies, to demonstrate the benefits of dynamic waveform adaptation. The work will be of interest not only to practitioners of radar and sonar, but also other applications where waveforms can be dynamically designed, such as communications and biosensing. Long ignored by historians and repudiated in their time, practitioners of private law opened the way toward Japan’s legal modernity. From the seventeenth to the turn of the twentieth century, lawyers and their predecessors changed society in ways that first samurai and then the state could not. During the Edo period (1600–1868), they worked from the shadows to bend the shogun’s law to suit the market needs of merchants and the justice concerns of peasants. Over the course of the nineteenth century, legal practitioners changed law from a tool for rule into a new epistemology and laid the foundation for parliamentary politics during the Meiji era (1868–1912). This social and political history argues that legal modernity sprouted from indigenous roots and helped delineate a budding nation’s public and private spheres. Tracing the transition of law regimes from Edo to Meiji, Darryl E. Flaherty shows how the legal profession emerged as a force for change in modern Japan and highlights its lasting contributions in founding private universities, political parties, and a national association of lawyers that contributed to legal reform during the twentieth century.

The authors study the mapping class groups of orientable [italic]P2-irreducible 3-manifolds with compressible boundary, and extend the results proved by K. Johannson for the boundary incompressible case. The authors show that the mapping class group is finitely-generated and has a geometrically defined subgroup of finite index. The main tool used in the proof of the results is to reduce the theorems to analogous statements about incompressible neighborhoods of compressible boundary components, and, using the fact that they have a very simple structure (being products-with-handles), to apply geometric techniques. Appropriate extensions of the results of the nonorientable [italic]P2-irreducible 3-manifolds are also given.

Their primary mission: kidnap enemy soldiers--alive--for interrogation.
History of the author's family who emigrated from China in 1911 and settled in South Africa. Their family name was Fok. It was probably changed by immigration officials when they arrived.
While working for the Salina Journal I made a lot of feature pictures which I had done in high school. Reporting to work each morning, I would see what they wanted me to do. The two editors in charge would say, We dont have anything going onso go out and beat the bushes. I had roughly two hours to drive around and photograph, come back and develop the film, and give to the editors to see what they wanted. I then had to print the image and engrave it. Their comments were always the samenothing going ongo beat the bushes. I learned quickly how to find something to fill the hole on the front page without saying I could not find anything. I had to fulfill my military obligation. Over a Christmas holiday in 1960 and January of 1961, I came back to work for the Journal until October. Charlie McCarty called me stating, We do not have a photo position but we have a reporting job in the Kansas City bureau and we would like for you to take it. Sounds great - quit the Salina Journal and drove to Kansas City where I saw Joe Galloway whom I had known from the UPI days. The first day of work the boss, David Otracker, told me that Vice President, Lyndon Johnson was coming to meet with Harry Truman. During the 1960 convention, Truman refused to go because it was thought it was rigged for Kennedy. Johnson was in town to soothe Trumans feathers. I went as a reporter and UPI sent me a photographer. I wrote the story about Johnson and Truman but did not photograph it. I stayed in Kansas City until they had an opening in Oklahoma City thinking this was a good place to be but was there only two weeks. I learned there was an opening in Austin, Texas and went to work for UPI as a staff photographer at the Austin American Statesman. There was an arrangement between UPI and the newspapers purchasing the UPI telephoto network and Charlie McCarty included four photographers. The same arrangement existed at the Dallas Times Herald. When Felix McKnight was hired at the Dallas paper he brought all his people with him therefore changing the photo operations. Three UPI staffers worked for the Herald and this is where I was November 22, 1963. I photographed the Kennedys and Connollys at the intersection of Main and Hardware.

The authors compare classical and quantum dynamics in the quasiclassical region of parameters and under the condition of unstable (chaotic) classical behavior.
