African nations have watched the recent civic dramas of the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street asking if they too will see similar civil society actions in their own countries. Nigeria—Africa’s most populous nation—has long enjoyed one of the continent’s most vibrant civil society spheres, which has been instrumental in political change. Initially viewed as contributing to democracy’s development, however, civil society groups have come under increased scrutiny by scholars and policymakers. Do some civil society groups promote democracy more effectively than others? And if so, which ones, and why? By examining the structure, organizational cultures, and methods of more than one hundred Nigerian civil society groups, Kew finds that the groups that best promote democratic development externally are themselves internally democratic. Specifically, the internally democratic civil society groups build more sustainable coalitions to resist authoritarian rule; support and influence political parties more effectively; articulate and promote public interests in a more negotiable fashion; and, most importantly, inculcate democratic norms in their members, which in turn has important democratizing impacts on national political cultures and institutions. Further, internally democratic groups are better able to resolve ethnic differences and ethnic-based tensions than their undemocratically structured peers. This book is a deeply comprehensive account of Nigerian civil society groups in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Kew blends democratic theory with conflict resolution methodologies to argue that the manner in which groups—and states—manage internal conflicts provides an important gauge as to how democratic their political cultures are. The conclusions will allow donors and policymakers to make strategic decisions in their efforts to build a democratic society in Nigeria and other regions.
First published in 1998, this book presents an overview of some recent debates on the history of religion in England from the accession of James I to the outbreak of the Civil War. Darren Oldridge rejects the polarisation of discussion on the meaning and impact of Laudianism’s innovations and the effects of the zealous Puritans. Instead, the author draws them together to emphasise how each directly influenced the other within a wider heightening of religious tension. Joshua's gallery 'Factual Nonsense' was quite unlike any other. Called a 'crazy powerhouse of ideas' it was a kind of cultural think-tank located in the then run-down East End area known as Shoreditch, which would later become a cohesive and creative hub (since rebranded as 'Silicon Roundabout'). Joshua was the driving force that turned the area's fortune and reputation around. Under the auspices of his Factual Nonsense banner, he held some of the most important and influential public art events of the late 20th Century. The first of these was an anarchic swipe at the notion of a traditional village fete called 'A Fete Worse than Death', with some of the biggest but the still yet unknown stars of the art world, including Damien Hirst and Angus Fairhurst, famously dressed as clowns and produced the first spin paintings at the Fete (for sale for the princely sum of £1). Whilst Hirst's spin machine has, from lowly beginnings at the Fete, gone on to appear recently at the World Economic Forum, a billionaire's playground, creating spin paintings for rich oligarch's wives as entertainment, Joshua was to die alone, poverty stricken back in 1996 on the cusp of international fame. Never reaping the rewards that were to come from the economic upturn and Charles Saatchi's Sensation exhibition, his death was a marker for the beginning of an era of international fame and success for his contemporaries and the end of the 'classic' avant-garde. The list of the seventy or so names of people I have interviewed for the book over the past year reads like a who's who of the contemporary art world, with contributions from the likes of Jay Jopling, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gary Hume, Gavin Turk, Maureen Paley and Sir Peter Blake. Although Joshua never achieved the recognition that he deserved in his lifetime, he was a pivotal figure in the London art scene during the early 1990's. Josh moved into Hoxton and opened a gallery there and started a veritable art movement, while the place was a neglected London backwater. His lasting legacy was to bring together a group of artists and gallerists and create what is now known as the YBA scene. The text is illustrated with previously unseen photographs, letters and extracts from Joshua's diaries, which give insight into his thought process as well as the deterioration of his mental state towards the end of his brief but eventful life.
The 1916 Rising is one of the most documented and analysed episodes in Ireland's turbulent history. Often overlooked, however, is its immediate aftermath. This significant window in the narrative of Irish revolutionary history, which saw the rebirth of the Volunteers and laid the foundations for the War of Independence, is usually covered as a footnote, or from the biographical standpoints of the leaders. Picking up where the authors' acclaimed account of the Rising, When the Clock Struck in 1916, left off, we join the men and women of the Rising in the dark abyss of defeat. The leaders' poignant final hours and violent ends are laid bare, but the perspective of those with the unpalatable task of carrying out the executions is also revealed, rectifying a historic disservice to those who reluctantly formed the firing squads. While the prisoners in Dublin awaited their grisly fates, others were deported in stinking cattle boats to camps in England and Wales. When they returned, it was to a jubilant welcome in a radically changed country. The gruesome death of Thomas Ashe in September 1917, after being force-fed in Mountjoy Prison, became a marshalling point for the republican movement, as his funeral saw Volunteers once again assembled in uniform on Dublin's streets. The next phase of the struggle was born, under new leaders who had 'graduated' from the internment camps known as 'Republican Universities', ready and eager to fill the void left by the executed visionaries. The authors sifted through thousands of first-hand accounts of the suffering endured when ordinary people set out to change history. Their stirring account will transport readers into life as it looked, sounded and even smelt to those taking part in this crucial juncture of our history.
