In the early months of the Spanish Civil War, Canadian-American archaeologist Dr. Grace “Shale” Clifden and her inexperienced field crew of well-met Canadians—Dorothy Livesay, P. K. Page, and Sheila Doherty—are documenting a rare discovery of prehistoric cave art in Galicia when they are kidnapped. A local Spanish commander, a Nationalists, loyal to Franco and the Fascists, believes they are foreign spies and takes them to his ancestral home, locking them in underground cells. There, he enlists his brother, Dr. Alexandre Castro, a psychology professor at the University of Madrid, to interrogate the women, but instead, he secretly forms a bond with them. Unlike the commander, Alexandre is a loyalist, supporting the Republicans, nevertheless, he is eager to escape the clutches of the State Intelligence Service—who plan to force him to devise forms of psychological torture. Alexandre convinces his brother to let him chaperone the women while they finish their research, as the Smithsonian will pay the commander a hefty sum for it. After Shale and the women have compiled their findings, Alexandre helps them escape Spain to London with him. But while in London, they learn of other Canadians who have bravely volunteered to help fight for democracy in Spain despite the dangers, and now, they, too, want to help the cause. Knowing the war is escalating, Alexandre, Shale and the women are determined to rescue archives and artifacts from the University of Madrid and help the National Junta for Protection of Artistic Treasure transfer Spain’s great art collection to Geneva. As they do so, they must be braver than ever, as the devastating Battle of Madrid is upon them.

This handbook provides the reader with an historical and contemporary overview of the service by women in all branches of the U.S. military, tracing the causes and effects of evolving policies, issues, structural barriers, and cultural challenges on the record and in the future of the accomplishments by women warriors. Women in the United States Armed Forces: A Guide to the Issues covers over a century of accomplishments of military women, from the Civil War to the current wars in the Middle East. Readers will learn, for example, that during World War II, 565 women in the Women's Army Corps stationed in the Pacific theater received combat decorations, proving that women had the courage, strength, and stamina to perform in a combat environment. They will also learn that, perhaps surprisingly, it wasn't until the mid- to late 1970s that women had their first opportunities to serve at sea and as aviators (crew as well as pilots), albeit on noncombatant ships and aircraft. The book's final four chapters discuss the issues that continue to plague women in the military, including sexual harassment, noting that women's performance in America's two-front wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made a positive difference in attitudes. The handbook closes with an epilogue that is at once a summary of the issues and a call for action.
Cordova is built upon a rich foundation of bounties from both the sea and the land; add to that the traditions of many cultures of people and the result is a novel Alaskan community. Natives lived near the shores of the lake, and coastal areas of Prince William Sound guaranteed a food source with the return of the salmon each spring. Salmon also attracted others; by 1887, two canneries were operating in the Odiak Slough area. By 1915, Cordova became known as the "Razor Clam Capital of the World." High in the Wrangell Mountains lays the rich Kennecott copper lode; Cordova's deepwater port was selected as the most accessible terminus for copper ore shipment. A 196-mile railroad delivered the first train loaded with copper ore to Cordova in 1911, beginning an era of prosperity and growth. Cordova has since survived the loss of the railroad, devastating fires, nature's earthquakes, and man-made oil spills.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the ordinations of “The Philadelphia Eleven,” this expanded and revised edition serves as the definitive account of the courageous women who shattered stained glass ceilings and sparked a global movement to revolutionize faith and society. Nearly fifty years after eleven audacious women made history as the first female priests ordained in the Episcopal Church, Darlene O'Dell revisits their inspiring journey in a revised and expanded edition of her acclaimed The Story of the Philadelphia Eleven. Through extensive interviews and tireless archival research, this definitive account was the first to vividly resurrect the pivotal moment that tore down barriers and changed the Episcopal Church forever. Both critics and scholars hailed the book, calling it “a needed history and a brilliantly told tale” (Mary E.Hunt) and “enthralling reading…O'Dell certainly has the novelist's gift of making her story come alive and in maintaining her readers' interest” (Bernard Palmer). Now fresh interviews unveil dozens of never-before-told perspectives, while updated chapters lend contemporary relevance to a history we can't afford to forget. Additionally, the author has included exclusive conversations with one of the “Washington Four,” a chapter on the impactful Barbara Harris, and insights into the wider Anglican church's role in what is now universally considered a landmark event. This edition doesn't just look back; it casts a critical eye on what's changed and what hasn't, questioning the patriarchy that persists in faith institutions and how these ordinations echo in today's political culture. Both an intimate character study and a sweeping examination, The Story of the Philadelphia Eleven is a renewed call to understand our past in order to better navigate our collective future.

I said, Mom, Im just so sorry for hurting you. My words were kind, and I again tried to explain why I had done what I did. All of a sudden, buried tears deep inside my heart began to pour out. Through my crying I said, Mom, I love you so much. Do you know that? She responded quietly, I have had my doubts, sometimes. As the conversation continued, we both talked and listened to each other. It was one of those mother-daughter times we will both treasure for the rest of our lives. My mom hugged me, and I quickly hugged her right back. A tremendous weight had lifted from my soul. We connected, we forgave, and we loved. God helped us both, and His love is so amazing! In December of 2013, my heart was overflowing with joy, and I once again felt inspired to write. I was in prayer, and I asked God a question. How can I show people that I have really changed? I felt Gods answer, and it was pretty simple. Just show them what you do every day.

What may we say about the significance of particular moral actions for one’s relationship with God? In this provocative analysis of contemporary Catholic moral theology Darlene Fozard Weaver shows the person as a moral agent acting in relation to God. Using an overarching theological context of sinful estrangement from and gracious reconciliation in God, Weaver shows how individuals negotiate their relationships with God in and through their involvement with others and the world. Much of current Christian ethics focuses more on persons and their virtues and vices exemplified by the work of virtue ethicists or on sinful social structures illustrated in the work of liberation theologians. These judgments fail to appreciate the reflexive character of human action and neglect the way our actions negotiate our response to God. Weaver develops a theologically robust moral anthropology that advances Christian understanding of persons and moral actions and contends we can better understand the theological import of moral actions by seeing ourselves as creatures who live, move, and have our being in God.

Despite the rampant growth in publishing, locating these often-scattered and inaccessible materials remains a challenge. This resource guide provides easy access to the available literature. Topical chapters on the most often researched themes are included, such as core historical literature, books for children and young adults, hot-button issues (passing, identification, appearance, fitting in, and blood quantification), interracial dating and marriage, families, adoption, and issues pertaining to race and queer sexuality. Each chapter includes a brief discussion of the literature on the topic, including historical context and comments on the breadth and depth of the available literature, and followed by annotations of books, popular and scholarly journals, magazines, and newspaper articles, videos/films, and websites. Other useful sections include a chapter on the depiction of interracial relationships in film, teaching an interracial issues course, and how to search for materials given changing terminology and classification issues. Indexes by race and non-print media are included.

How do you go to sleep, if you're not sure you're going to wake up? While most of the population of the Spinning Wheel, a Chapter colonization ship, sleeps in their cryo bays, Zellendine and Troylus go through the motions of their shift awake, keeping the ship going. But the first tendrils of the Grimm star, the star that will be their sun on their new planet, are shining in the windows, and with the light comes more changes than they are prepared for. First, a baby is born dead from one of the mechanical wombs on board with no warning that something is wrong. Second, some of the people in the next shift, waking up from their cryo bay for the hand off period on the ship, are stuck in deep, steady REM sleep. And third, while Troylus is on a starwalk to close the shields over the windows because a strange anomaly is detected in front of the ship, the anomaly… attacks. He doesn’t have a better description for it. And he doesn’t have any way to explain what he does in response to save Zellendine on the other side of the window, watching on in horror. Only one more period in cryo before they are scheduled to arrive on their long awaited new planet, but can they even survive until they are supposed to go to sleep again? And if they do, will they ever wake up?
