Long after the passage of civil rights laws, blacks and Latinos possess barely a nickel of wealth for every dollar that whites have. Why have we made so little progress? Legal scholar Daria Roithmayr provocatively argues that racial inequality lives on because white advantage functions as a powerful self-reinforcing monopoly, reproducing itself automatically from generation to generation even in the absence of intentional discrimination. Drawing on work in antitrust law and a range of other disciplines, Roithmayr brilliantly compares the dynamics of white advantage to the unfair tactics of giants like AT&T and Microsoft. With penetrating insight, Roithmayr locates the engine of white monopoly in positive feedback loops that connect the dramatic disparity of Jim Crow to modern racial gaps in jobs, housing and education. Wealthy white neighborhoods fund public schools that then turn out wealthy white neighbors. Whites with lucrative jobs informally refer their friends, who refer their friends, and so on. Roithmayr concludes that racial inequality might now be locked in place, unless policymakers immediately take drastic steps to dismantle this oppressive system.

Daria Frezza covers six tumultuous decades of transatlantic history to examine how European theories of mass politics and crowd psychology influenced American social scientists' perception of crowds, mobs, democratic "people," and its leadership. In the last decades of the nineteenth century, the development of an urban-industrial mass society and the disordered influx of millions of immigrants required a redefinition of these important categories in American public discourse. Frezza shows how in the Atlantic crossing of ideas American social scientists reelaborated the European theories of crowd psychology and the racial theories then in fashion. Theorists made a sharp distinction between the irrationality of the crowd, including lynchings, and the rationality of the democratic "public." However, this paradigm of a rational Anglo-Saxon male public in opposition to irrational mobs--traditionally considered to be composed of women, children, "savages"--was challenged by the reality of southern lynch mobs made up of white Anglo-Saxons, people who used mob violence as an instrument of subjugation over an allegedly inferior race. After World War I, when the topic of eugenics and immigration restrictions ignited the debate of exclusion/inclusion regarding U.S. citizenship, Franz Boas's work provided a significant counterbalance to the biased language of race. Furthermore, the very concept of democracy was questioned from many points of view. During the Depression years, social scientists such as John Dewey critically analyzed the democratic system in comparison to European dictatorships. The debate then acquired an international dimension. In the "ideological rearmament of America" on the eve of World War II, social scientists criticized Nazi racism but at the same time stressed how racism was also deeply rooted in America. This is a fresh and provocative look at the parallels between the emergence of America as a world power and the maturing of the new discipline of social science.

Advances in the neurocognitive sciences, aided by increased imaging power, have extensively confirmed that during early development specific areas of a child’s brain are designed to process specific functions — neurologic, cognitive, linguistic, motoric, and visuospatial, among others — and that this processing involves globally complex interconnections with other areas distributed throughout the brain: a lesion in a given area interferes with the functioning and coherence of the system as a whole. This volume discusses the consequences of early brain injury to many parts of the brain, including the basal ganglia, with their related disorders of aphasia, OCD, and AD/HD, as well as white matter and its associated neuropsychological impairment of intelligence, language, and visuoperception. The corpus callosum and cerebellum are studied as they relate to learning motor sequences and language as well as communication disorders and social behavior. This book also looks at mirror neurons as they affect the understanding of others’ intentions and the development of empathy and gestural and other forms of language. The implications of these findings are examined since they have a critical effect on the rehabilitative and educational efforts that are being designed to mitigate the effects of early brain lesions on the growing child.

The opening section of the volume is dedicated to the structure and function of cerebellum: the specific development of the cerebellum, unlike other structures of the central nervous system, begins at a later stage of foetal development and lasts longer, even after birth, thus making the cerebellum particularly vulnerable to a wide range of insults, both genetic and acquired. Of particular interest are chapters that focus on cerebellar disorders, which may occur in isolation, or else as part of more complex malformations of the posterior fossa or in association with other supratentorial anomalies. Such conditions may be encountered both as part of ‘static’ congenital encephalopathies as well as in the frame of neurodegenerative or neurometabolic disorders. The recent advances in neuroimaging and genetics have enabled us to characterize and define the genetic basis of an increasing number of paediatric cerebellar disorders. The last part of the volume is dedicated to care and rehabilitation in cerebellar diseases : their correct diagnosis is pivotal in order to address patients to the appropriate genetic testing, plan clinical management and therapeutic strategies, and provide adequate genetic counselling.

She became a soloist there at 18, and then spent three years with the Scottish Ballet before joining the ENB in 1996. Her innate tenacity has seen Daria through some tough times. Her father, a factory mechanic and her greatest fan, died from lung cancer when she was newly arrived in London and didn't have many friends. When her only brother Radek was killed in a motorcycle accident, she cried all day then had to go on stage to dance Giselle. That was the greatest pain she has ever known, she says. It gave her a determination to enjoy life and keep ballet in perspective. Similarly when she fell pregnant with her first child, Daria explains how those around her where shocked that she was not more concerned with the upcoming performance of Sleeping Beauty. In her wonderful and insightful autobiography Daria reveals what life is like behind the scenes and how you really can have it all.

Writing Architecture in Modern Italy tells the history of an intellectual group connected to the small but influential Italian Einaudi publishing house between the 1930s and the 1950s. It concentrates on a diverse group of individuals, including Bruno Zevi, an architectural historian and politician; Giulio Carlo Argan, an art historian; Italo Calvino, a fiction writer; Giulio Einaudi, a publisher; and Elio Vittorini and Cesare Pavese, both writers and translators. Linking architectural history and historiography within a broader history of ideas, this book proposes four different methods of writing history, defining historiographical genres, modes, and tones of writing that can be applied to history writing to analyze political and social moments in time. It identifies four writing genres: myths, chronicles, history, and fiction, which became accepted as forms of multiple postmodern historical stories after 1957. Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, Ruhr-University of Bochum, language: English, abstract: In May 2013, Cheerios released a television commercial portraying an interracial family which consisted of a white mother, a black father and their biracial daughter. The commerical sparked a controversy over race and what an American family should look like. For its representation of an interracial family it received such a strong racist backlash on social media that the YouTube channel of the company had to be disabled. The seminar paper aims to develop a lesson plan on the sensitive topic of racism and its impact on individuals, families and society, using the Cheerios commerical from 2013 and the debate it sparked on social media. The author starts by depicting the commercial and its reactions following the release. In the next step, brief information on the history of interracial relationships and current data on interracial marriages in the US is given. Then, the author focuses on short films and commercials by presenting their definitions and arguments for their integration in the TEFL classroom. The paper concludes with a realization of the lesson and an explanation of the didactic decision.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, , language: English, abstract: William Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily is often regarded as a “story of horror”, with gothic elements due to its creepy and shocking final scene. Moreover, different themes such as the loss of beloved ones, isolation and the refusal to accept change are covered in this story. There is also a variety of popular readings of A Rose for Emily emphasizing “the conflict between the North and the South” or “the conflict between individual and the community, between the past and the present, between men and women”. The question is of how the author depicts such complexity of character, emotion and setting? Faulkner himself said that “in a short story [...] almost every word has got to be almost exactly right” (Petry 54). As a result almost every word in a short story has a greater meaning, which is achieved using imagery and symbolism. Imagery is the representation of experiences of the senses, which uses descriptive, but also figurative language, whereas symbolism is used by “writers to invest objects, actions or ideas with a symbolic meaning”. The symbols convey special meanings to the reader, standing for one single idea or many. This paper will analyze the function and use of imagery and symbolism in A Rose for Emily focusing on the functions of the house, how the picture of Emily is drawn, the function of the town, the characterization of the men in the protagonist ́s life, then the aspect of time and finally the attempt to analyze the symbol of the rose in the title trying to reveal a much imagery and symbolic meaning as possible. It will be shown, that a Rose for Emily is complex and rich in imagery, symbolism and ambiguity used by Faulkner to characterize people, describe relations and atmosphere.
