While running tests on a popular microprocessor, gifted chip designer Ethan Alon makes a puzzling discovery: an undocumented section with unknown functions. Ethan and his friend Rina Hardin crack the encryption and discover a clandestine network monitoring defense systems around the world, but especially focused on the Middle East. With the help of military analyst Barrett Parker, they discover the program is the work of scientists from Project Flower-an actual Israeli-Iranian missile program from the 1970s. These scientists came to mistrust politicians and generals and designed a system to prevent or at least limit wars. Their program is astounding, but it has a flaw-the Samson Heuristic. The flaw becomes apparent when intelligence operations come undone and overtax the system. American, Iranian, and Israeli militaries are on high alert, and war seems imminent. Ethan and Rina race to fix the Samson Heuristic while in a Tel Aviv command center-under the noses of generals who know nothing of Samson. Meanwhile, Barrett and like-minded analysts build opposition to war from inside bureaus in Washington and Jerusalem. The future of the Middle East lies in the balance.

With the help of his son, Danny, Herman Rittman narrates his experience of the Holocaust. His story begins in Romania, where his happy childhood was interrupted when Hungarian officials sent the Jews to the Oradea ghetto, then to Auschwitz. Here the fourteen-year-old experienced unimaginablecruelty and countless deaths. He is sent to a gas chamber, only to have his life spared by Josef Mengele, the Angel of Death, in exchange for his participation in medical experiments. Hermans moving, evocative story is unsparing in its emotional honesty, filled with detailed vignettes about life in the death camp, his fellow prisoners, the guards and nurses, and fi nally the GIs who liberated Dachau in 1945.Herman ultimately reunites with his surviving family members in Romania, and emigrates to Palestine en route to a new life as an Israeli citizen. This story of how the authors courage, resilience, and determination helped him survive horrific circumstances is an unforgettable memoir of a terrible chapter in modern history.
Herman Rittman was born in 1930 and grew up Hungary, enjoying the simple liberties of going to school and playing with friends, even in the early years of World War II. But in 1944, the Third Reich began deporting Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz, and Herman and his family were sent there, most of them immediately put to death. For Herman Rittman, this would be only the beginning of his journey. In From Victim to Solider: My Journey from Auschwitz to Israel, a retired Israeli colonel and intelligence officer recounts his life from boyhood in Hungary to his retirement in Israel. Herman Rittman, later adopting the name Zvi in his new country of Israel, was interned in a Hungarian ghetto before being sent to Auschwitz, where after enduring months of hard labor he would be paradoxically saved from execution by the war criminal Josef Mengeleonly to be selected as a victim for the Angel of Deaths medical experiments. But after his liberation by American troops at Dachau, Zvi would go on to see the birth of the state of Israel and commit his life to fighting for its future. From Victim to Solider has many powerful and poignant moments, as any work on the Holocaust, war, and espionage would. Though many passages display Zvis dark humor, which has been with him since Auschwitz and indeed helped him through that ordeal and many more, there would be better days aheadand Zvi would be part of making those dreams into realities.
The thought of a Jewish SS officer is preposterous and off-putting, but people took extraordinary steps to protect themselves and their loved ones in Nazi Germany. In this true story, the author shares the story of Yochanan Berger, who reluctantly confessed his dark past to only a few people late in his life. Born in 1920, Berger grew up near Berlin in a strict Orthodox family, with his life shaped by faith and community until he was captivated by a young Catholic woman. They fell in love and despite objections, married. Shortly later, a friend in the national records office warned him of what was to come and gave him a new identity: Johan Ludwig. When a Gestapo officer doubted his identity and pressed him to enter the SS, Berger agreed to protect himself and his family. Upon receiving his commission, Berger was assigned to a sub-camp of Dachau where slaves made war munitions. He administered the camp as ordered but also secured care for victims of medical experiments, smuggled a baby out of the camp, and even killed a menacing SS officer. Discover the story of a man whose love for family and will to survive forced him to make unthinkable decisions.
