Herman Rittman was born in 1930 and grew up Hungary, enjoying the simple liberties of going to school and playing with friends, even in the early years of World War II. But in 1944, the Third Reich began deporting Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz, and Herman and his family were sent there, most of them immediately put to death. For Herman Rittman, this would be only the beginning of his journey. In From Victim to Solider: My Journey from Auschwitz to Israel, a retired Israeli colonel and intelligence officer recounts his life from boyhood in Hungary to his retirement in Israel. Herman Rittman, later adopting the name Zvi in his new country of Israel, was interned in a Hungarian ghetto before being sent to Auschwitz, where after enduring months of hard labor he would be paradoxically saved from execution by the war criminal Josef Mengeleonly to be selected as a victim for the Angel of Deaths medical experiments. But after his liberation by American troops at Dachau, Zvi would go on to see the birth of the state of Israel and commit his life to fighting for its future. From Victim to Solider has many powerful and poignant moments, as any work on the Holocaust, war, and espionage would. Though many passages display Zvis dark humor, which has been with him since Auschwitz and indeed helped him through that ordeal and many more, there would be better days aheadand Zvi would be part of making those dreams into realities.

Of course life in Israel is also about life in the Middle East which is a volatile part of the world. The issue about war due to religion and politics has been going on for a long time; but each story; long or short, attempts to explain to the reader at why Israel is so special from various view points. The short stories are like an appetizer to give you some creativity in your free time because they will also make you laugh from time to during difficult situations or circumstances.

Some semi-public, exclusive male settings, most noticeably in the military, encourage the production of intimacy and desire. Yet whereas in most instances this desire is displaced through humor and aggressive gestures, it becomes acknowledged and outright declared once associated with sites of heroic death. In his provocative study of interrelations between friendship in everyday life and national sentiments in Israel, the author follows selected stories of friendship ranging over early childhood, school, the workplace, and some unique war experiences. He explores the symbolism of friendship in rituals for the fallen soldiers, the commemoration of Prime Minister Yzhak Rabin, and the national infatuation with recovering bodies of missing soldiers. He concludes that the Israeli case offers an extreme instance of a much broader cultural phenomenon: declaring the friendship for the dead epitomizes the political “blood pact” between men, taking precedence over the traditional blood ties of kinship and heterosexual unions. The book underscores nationalism as a homosocial-based emotion of commemorative desire.
