Rogue Wall Street trader Marty Bekoff has achieved the impossible and stolen sixty billion dollars from his investors. Too bad the FBI is onto him. Moments before the feds take him into custody, Marty squirrels away forty million dollars in several unknown locations in the wilds of Florida. When word of the hidden loot leaks out, the chase is on. Redneck dopers, bloodthirsty mobsters, and crooked cops join the hunt for the spoils, as do octogenarian hookers and frantic ex-cons. In other words, it’s just another typical day in Florida. In the footsteps of esteemed authors Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey, Danny Corey weaves a tale of a multi-billion-dollar theft gone awry, ritual murder, meth labs and kittens. Add to that dirty cops, high-end prostitution, and the Irish and Italian mob. What could possibly go wrong?
The book opens as the Civil War is ending. The heart has been ripped out of the country and the men who fought in the war. All these men want now is to find peace and a place they can call home, if possible love. To find that, they join forces with the men they fought with and have come to trust. They know they have one another's back, and they will need it. Their story is not that unusual; they must fight prejudice and fight men of greed who have no honor and who know only how to hurt others and to steal? It is as old as the war between good and evil. You will come to hope they can bet the odds. If you feel a tear in your eye, you will not be alone. In some parts, you might laugh a little. When you reach the end of this book, you will be glad you read it.

The untold story of one of the first Black players for the St. Louis Cardinals, who dreamed of leaving a lasting impact on Major League Baseball. Charlie Peete was poised for greatness. After a meteoric rise through the minor leagues, the rookie outfielder appeared in twenty-three games for the St. Louis Cardinals during the summer of 1956 and established himself as one of the best prospects in the organization—until a cruel twist of fate intervened. On his way to Venezuela to compete in a winter baseball league, Peete and his family died in a plane crash near Caracas. Nearly seven decades later, Cardinal Dreams revitalizes the legacy of Charlie Peete with the most comprehensive account to date of his remarkable life, including personal interviews with those who knew him and played with him. Raised under Jim Crow laws in southeastern Virginia, Peete broke into professional baseball in 1950 with the Negro American League’s Indianapolis Clowns, served his country admirably for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, returned home to help integrate the Class B Piedmont League with the Portsmouth Merrimacs, and then climbed to the top of the St. Louis Cardinals organization at a time of rapid change under new ownership. Had Peete not lost his life in that plane crash, he likely would have become the first Black position player in franchise history to earn a permanent starting job. Charlie Peete’s death stunned the St. Louis Cardinals and left the baseball world to forever wonder what his career might have become. But, despite his premature and tragic ending, Peete changed the world for the better—and left a lasting impact on the sport he spent his life pursuing.

In recent decades, turnout in US presidential elections has soared, education levels have hit historic highs, and the internet has made information more accessible than ever. Yet over that same period, Americans have grown less engaged with local politics and elections. Drawing on detailed analysis of fifteen years of reporting in over 200 local newspapers, along with election returns, surveys, and interviews with journalists, this study shows that the demise of local journalism has played a key role in the decline of civic engagement. As struggling newspapers have slashed staff, they have dramatically cut their coverage of mayors, city halls, school boards, county commissions, and virtually every aspect of local government. In turn, fewer Americans now know who their local elected officials are, and turnout in local elections has plummeted. To reverse this trend and preserve democratic accountability in our communities, the local news industry must be reinvigorated – and soon.

In Monrovia Modern Danny Hoffman uses the ruins of four iconic modernist buildings in Monrovia, Liberia, as a way to explore the relationship between the built environment and political imagination. Hoffman shows how the E. J. Roye tower and the Hotel Africa luxury resort, as well as the unfinished Ministry of Defense and Liberia Broadcasting System buildings, transformed during the urban warfare of the 1990s from symbols of the modernist project of nation-building to reminders of the challenges Monrovia's residents face. The transient lives of these buildings' inhabitants, many of whom are ex-combatants, prevent them from making place-based claims to a right to the city and hinder their ability to think of ways to rebuild and repurpose their built environment. Featuring nearly 100 of Hoffman's color photographs, Monrovia Modern is situated at the intersection of photography, architecture, and anthropology, mapping out the possibilities and limits for imagining an urban future in Monrovia and beyond.
This book is about salvation within unity, and a reminder to all should be our remission for our sins in knowing spiritual guidance must be accepted and maintained for the continual growth for all humans is and will be the balance needed to weed out the greed of destruction. We must maintain obedience to the prosperity of growth, not greed. None are god to another, but we do have heroes who do godly things for others. We are the flesh, living with and in the spirit of borrowed time. If we all say Amen, then God’s will, will be done.
Set apart from my mother's womb, called me through His grace, was pleased to reveal His Son to me that I might preach.--Galatians 1:15-16.The story you are about to read is one of how God used a cheap little maiden "claiming" colt to bring honor to Himself. It is also a story of how He revealed Himself to those whose lives were connected to the colt. It is a story of lives touched, prayers answered, and God's saving grace. A reflection of God using this colt to show His awesome presence in the daily life of two trainers, two jockeys, an owner, and myself. (What I was to this colt is still an unknown to me, yet the lessons I learned from this experience were, are, and always will be a blessing to me.)This is a story about a dark bay colt named Pluie's Stock by Pluie's Sylvester and about how God used him to uncover truths about Himself. Pluie is a plain but honest horse. He does not have a valuable pedigree, as you can see from his sire, a son of Verbatim. His breeding fame is linked to his dam, an unaccomplished daughter by Key to the Mint, the winner of the racing's hallowed Eclipse Award, American champion, three-year-old male (1972). Pluie, however, did not yet have racing credentials of significance himself. When he arrived in Texas, Pluie had a 0 for 6 race record, his best effort being a second-place finish going a mile.Racing in Faith is also a story about forgiveness and restoration when two friends, caught off guard from what was supposed to be a blessed event that turned into one of agony. But God, in His loving covenant to His faithful, straightened out the crooked road yielding a partnership between the friends and lifting up the team around Pluie's Stock. God can use the unusual to reveal Himself to His children. Psalm 72:18 reminds us "the God of Israel who alone works wonders." It is a story of how a minute and thirty-nine seconds transformed my life, affirmed God's love of me, and gave me an unending desire to help others know God.As you read of Pluie's races, defeats, and triumphs, you will see God at work. When you read of other's doubts, suspicions, and criticisms of Pluie's care and racing career, you will see how dramatically God intercedes in our daily affairs. This is a simple yet profound story of God, His sovereignty, His majesty, His love, His mercies, His provision, His sufficiency, His blessings, and His desires for each of us.It is my deepest prayer that you will get a glimpse of the magnificence of God as you read Pluie's story. I suspect if you read this story with an open heart, God will manifest Himself to you too.
A sharp, funny, and engaging introduction to socialist ideas, movements, and solutions for a world in crisis. Now with 50% more socialism! Socialism…Seriously is a warm and witty introduction to the radical traditions of protest and politics that stretch from Karl Marx through today’s movements for democracy, equality, and a livable planet. In this thoroughly revised and expanded edition, Danny Katch uses humor and imagination to take an unflinching look at the rising threats posed by climate change, billionaire oligarchs, and the far right—and makes a compelling case that a socialist world is both necessary and possible. Katch separates the lies spun by capitalism’s defenders from the system’s brutal realities, and is candid about debates and challenges facing the socialist movement today. This book is for people who want to take a deeper look at what socialism is… but maybe not that deep. Sincere, irreverent, informative, and playful, Socialism… Seriously is a unique and timely contribution to our movements for justice.
Sports and film are media that create time. They are temporal not only in the sense that they are defined and regulated by certain temporalities as a result of processes of social negotiation, but also in the sense of modulating and intervening in these processes in the first place. They are determined by multiple temporalities referring to and aligning along perceptual corporeality; but at the same time, they also produce time through and along temporalities of bodily expression and perception. Thus, as much as we perceive and understand sports and film by means of our culturally coded conceptions of time, this comprehension is itself already the product of these media’s fabrication and modulation of certain audiovisual imaginations of time. This book examines these imaginations with regard to US team sports feature films, understanding the former as the latter’s constitutive conflict which makes these films graspable as a genre in the first place. By addressing temporality as an ever-new crystallization of a heroic past and an unattainable future in a saturated yet volatile present, this conflict connects substantially to the American Dream as an idea of community-building historicity. Departing from a non-taxonomic approach in genre theory and such philosophical recognition of the American Dream as less an ideological narrative but more a social and socially effective imaginary embedded in an audiovisual discourse of time, this book demonstrates the interrelation of sports, cinema and “American” subjectivization along close readings of the poetics of affect of five exemplary sports films (FIELD OF DREAMS, WE ARE MARSHALL, KNUTE ROCKNE ALL AMERICAN, JIM THORPE – ALL-AMERICAN, MIRACLE).

A city boy, I had little association with animals, with the exception of a male English bulldog, Fella, who was my best friend until I was fi ve years old. We played together, napped together and ate from the same bowl together when our mother wasn't looking. His broad tongue covered my whole head in two swipes and many giggles. I was fi ve years old when he died but I remember him as though it was yesterday. Th e picture on the front cover is my Fella. He, above all others instilled in me a love for all animals. I grew up in Canada, receiving a doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College. At the age of nineteen I dedicated the next two years of my life to my church, serving as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in France and Switzerland. In the fi nal week of my mission, I had an experience I have recorded in these pages that softened my heart and my head and led me down a path to my future life's work. Th e subsequent adventures are recorded in large part in this book. Life changing adventures and lessons learned in the small family farm barns, often in the dead of night, of central New York and northern Vermont, and within the welcome warmth of my clinic. A word of caution: if a cow has a bad cough from pneumonia, DO NOT stand behind he
Growing up in the eighties in East London was no picnic. Proper hard bastards, wannabe villains and cockney wide boys everywhere you went, all looking to make their mark. With trouble at home and more at school, Danny Dyer didn't have many options. He was a rascal, running with a tough crowd, getting himself into scrapes with the Old Bill, on the verge of becoming just another nobody. Until he started to act. It came naturally to him. He landed role after role, working with big stars, making a name for himself. And then came Human Traffic, and his career went into overdrive. Fame opened doors into the best clubs, the best booze and even better drugs. But with the highs came the lows, and as the drinks flowed, the work dried up. Shut out of an industry that didn't understand him, that heard his reputation before bothering with his talent, he had no choice but to turn it around and sort himself out. This is the real story - straight up. Funny, honest, full of swagger, and jammed full of antics and anecdotes, this memoir tears it up proper and delivers on every page.

Card play at bridge embraces both declarer play and defense. Hundreds of books have been written about it. Our approach here, as in our previous books, is to focus on a particular deal type. Repeated experience with a theme makes it easier to recognize deal types and employ the appropriate techniques for each. A common and important line of play is elimination play, eliminating the side suits to removes an opponent’s safe exit cards before throwing him in to make a fatal lead. More than most other deal types, endplays require planning and preparation. In this as in our previous books, we show deals as they were misplayed at rubber bridge or its sister form of contest, team play at IMPs. Usually you will see a deal in which declarer falls short of his contract by one trick. Do not concern yourself with overtricks. In the forms of contest assumed here, making and breaking contracts is the objective. Take each misplayed deal as a challenge to find a better line---usually one that works, but no guarantees. An 80% play fails 20% of the time, but is significantly better than a 60% play and much better than a 40% play.
Every basketball team has its star player. From 1967 to 1970, Louisiana State University saw the rise of a legend: "Pistol Pete" Maravich, one of the greatest basketball players in LSU history and arguably the greatest to ever play college basketball. Known for his dazzling ball handling, creative passing, and extraordinary shooting, he averaged 44.2 points per game at LSU -- without the benefit of a three-point line -- and remains the NCAA's all-time leading scorer. Danny Brown, a journalism student at LSU during most of Pete's college years, took hundreds of photographs at LSU basketball games as part of his course work. In Shooting The Pistol, Brown offers more than eighty photographs -- most never before published -- of Pete in action, along with game statistics and personal recollections, to form the single most complete portrait ever made of Maravich at LSU. Danny first met Pete not on the basketball court, but during Air Force ROTC training, where Danny was Pete's squadron sergeant. Upon learning that the tall, scrawny guy with the shaved head and the purple-and-gold beanie cap was scoring 40 points a game on the freshman team, Danny replied, "That kid can play basketball?" Danny eventually became friends with Pete and his father, Coach "Press" Maravich, and his images pay tribute to an amazing athlete and a magical time in LSU sports history. Brown's photographs provide intimate courtside views of Pete's gravity-defying, play-making skills. Many capture Pete in midair, where he seemingly floats, his off-balance body positions resembling moves in an athletic ballet. Famous for his ability to stop on a dime, Pete -- as Brown's pictures demonstrate -- often caught opponents flat-footed as he quickly maneuvered for an opening to the basket or sent a sudden "no-look" pass to a teammate. The volume culminates in Brown's near-perfect photographs of Pete's shot that broke the NCAA scoring record during the 1970 Ole Miss game and of the ensuing game-stopping victory celebration. While the majority of the images here show number 23 in motion, several reveal the personal side of the shy star, including a rare game attendance by his mother and quieter off-court moments with his father. Throughout, Brown weaves a rich conversational commentary -- anecdotes about Pete, circumstances surrounding the more notable photographs, and descriptions of the games and Pete's performance.Seeing LSU's basketball phenomenon Pete Maravich through Danny Brown's lens will transport fans back in time, under the goal, to witness firsthand the making of college sports history.
