The textual and contextual connections between John Rawls's intellectual figure and American pragmatism (broadly conceived) have become topics of discussion only recently. This is at least in part due to the fact that Rawls seemed to have taken a "pragmatic turn" in his intellectual trajectory—from A Theory of Justice (1971) to Political Liberalism (1993). John Rawls and American Pragmatism: Between Engagement and Avoidance intervenes in these discussions with two unconventional claims corroborated by archival research. First, Daniele Botti shows that Rawls's thinking owes more to the American pragmatists' views than is generally recognized. Second, and in the light of the pragmatist sources of Rawls's thinking, Botti argues that we should reverse the common narrative about Rawls's alleged pragmatic turn and interpret it as a quite "un-pragmatic" one. By making the case for interpreting Rawls as an American pragmatist, this book profoundly transforms not only a widely held interpretation about Rawls's intellectual trajectory, but also our understanding of American philosophical vicissitude in the second half of the twentieth century.

This monograph provides an introduction to the design and analysis of Hybrid High-Order methods for diffusive problems, along with a panel of applications to advanced models in computational mechanics. Hybrid High-Order methods are new-generation numerical methods for partial differential equations with features that set them apart from traditional ones. These include: the support of polytopal meshes, including non-star-shaped elements and hanging nodes; the possibility of having arbitrary approximation orders in any space dimension; an enhanced compliance with the physics; and a reduced computational cost thanks to compact stencil and static condensation. The first part of the monograph lays the foundations of the method, considering linear scalar second-order models, including scalar diffusion – possibly heterogeneous and anisotropic – and diffusion-advection-reaction. The second part addresses applications to more complex models from the engineering sciences: non-linear Leray-Lions problems, elasticity, and incompressible fluid flows. This book is primarily intended for graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics and numerical analysis, who will find here valuable analysis tools of general scope.

This book introduces the basic ideas to build discontinuous Galerkin methods and, at the same time, incorporates several recent mathematical developments. The presentation is to a large extent self-contained and is intended for graduate students and researchers in numerical analysis. The material covers a wide range of model problems, both steady and unsteady, elaborating from advection-reaction and diffusion problems up to the Navier-Stokes equations and Friedrichs' systems. Both finite element and finite volume viewpoints are exploited to convey the main ideas underlying the design of the approximation. The analysis is presented in a rigorous mathematical setting where discrete counterparts of the key properties of the continuous problem are identified. The framework encompasses fairly general meshes regarding element shapes and hanging nodes. Salient implementation issues are also addressed.

Attraverso una disamina dettagliata, meticolosa, o sarebbe piu corretto dire, "scientifica" dell'Antico Testamento, l'autore porta a compimento, dapprima un'opera di sensibilizzazione riguardo alle tematiche religiose sempre piu distanti dall'agenda tematica dei giovani; successivamente opera, attraverso un'approfondita lettura, una sorta di abbattimento degli antichi dogmi preconfezionati dalla solita intellighentia, da sempre poco avvezza all'autocritica. [...] Ma il dettaglio piu interessante lo si puo trovare nelle tavole che contengono la traduzione degli scritti: esse racchiudono in se l'intera poetica distaccata del testo.
