Why do modern Americans believe in something called a sense of humor and how did they come to that belief? Daniel Wickberg traces the cultural history of the concept from its British origins as a way to explore new conceptions of the self and social order in modern America. More than simply the history of an idea, Wickberg's study provides new insights into a peculiarly modern cultural sensibility.The expression "sense of humor" was first coined in the 1840s and the idea that such a sense was a personality trait to be valued developed only in the 1870s. What is the relationship between Medieval humoral medicine and this distinctively modern idea of the sense of humor? What has it meant in the past 125 years to declare that someone lacks a sense of humor? How is the joke, as a twentieth-century quasi-literary form, different from the traditional folktale? Wickberg addresses these questions, among others, using the history of ideas to throw new light on the way contemporary Americans think and speak.The context of Wickberg's analysis is Anglo-American; the specifically British meanings of humor and laughter from the sixteenth century forward provide the framework for understanding American cultural values in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The genealogy of the sense of humor is, like the study of keywords, an avenue into a significant aspect of the cultural history of modernity. Drawing on a wide range of sources and disciplinary perspectives, Wickberg's analysis challenges many of the prevailing views of modern American culture and suggests a new model for cultural historians.

Each year, Ralis seemed to pick up the information faster and faster, or maybe Landon was teaching slower and slower. After a while, Landon would just give Ralis a book, he’d read it, get asked a few questions, Ralis would get them all right and Landon would take a nap while Ralis practiced on his own after studying from a new book. “Your mind is like a little sponge Ralis, keep filling it up!” With time and patients, Landon managed to help Ralis control his emotions, so he wouldn’t get all worked up if something went wrong, at first, Ralis’ aim wasn’t very good and he loved to watch things like jelly or butter splatter. But, when Landon forced him to clean up his messes by using ‘Grasping’ or ‘Holding’ spells on him, Ralis was out matched. After some time, Ralis learned better aim and self control.

The author's approach can be compared to viewing a majestic mountain range in its totality: the highest peaks take on even greater majesty when seen in their natural context of foothills and lesser peaks. This is how Haydn and Mozart were viewed by their contemporaries, whose world of perception Heartz recreates, using, among other things, the visual art of the period. His focus is on music as a part of cultural history at a particular time and place. During this past January, I admitted my wife of fifty-five years, Nancy Austin, to a memory care facility as she increasingly needed special care with the diagnosis of dementia. Within six weeks, a lockdown occurred during which our family saw her only through a windowpane. Talking with her depended on the availability of staff cell phones, always unpredictable. The grandchildren, children, and friends tried to touch her, a scene repeated often, leading to painful and frustrating moments. I decided to write a series of essays about Nancy for our children and grandchildren, which they never knew, memories that reached out wrapped in love and respect for others during the ensuing weeks and months of the pandemic. Soon other relatives and friends wanting to read them finally led to their publication. The reader may find similar experience, if not the same kind of storylines, as the pandemic is teaching us how to touch our loved ones.

Inside the Great House explores the nature of family life and kinship in planter households of the Chesapeake during the eighteenth century—a pivotal era in the history of the American family. Drawing on a wide assortment of personal documents—among them wills, inventories, diaries, family letters, memoirs, and autobiographies—as well as on the insights of such disciplines as psychology, demography, and anthropology, Daniel Blake Smith examines family values and behavior in a plantation society. Focusing on the emotional texture of the household, he probes deeply into personal values and relationships within the family and the surrounding circle of kin. Childrearing practices, male-female relationships, attitudes toward courtship and marriage, father-son ties, the character and influence of kinship, familial responses to illness and death, and the importance of inheritance—all receive extended treatment. A striking pattern of change emerges from this mosaic of life in the colonial South. What had once been a patriarchal, authoritarian, and emotionally restrained family environment altered profoundly during the latter half of the eighteenth century. The personal documents cited by Smith clearly point to the development after 1750 of a more intimate, child-centered family life characterized by close emotional bonds and by growing autonomy—especially for sons—in matters of marriage and career choice. Well-to-do planter families inculcated in their children a strong measure of selfconfidence and independence, as well as an abiding affection for their family society. Smith shows that Americans in the North as well as in the South were developing an altered view of the family and the world beyond it—a perspective which emphasized a warm and autonomous existence. This fascinating study will convince its readers that the history of the American family is intimately connected with the dramatic changes in the lives of these planter families of the eighteenth-century Chesapeake.

This Book has stories about Little Bobby and me, along with numerous others and some of the calls that we went on during the period of time of about 13 years with the Squad and also away from it. I first met the Mascot in June of 1955 to about 1963 when our lives took different paths, and we drifted away from each other for the next 47 or so years, except for special occasions when we met up at certain functions, including many major calls of the later 60s, and 70s, the riots in 1967, when Martin Luther King was killed, the 14th Street Bridge plane crash in the Potomac River.
