His dream was football. Since he was eight years old, author, Daniel Kelly, was a fan in every sense of the word. Every Sunday revolved around the game. He ate, breathed and lived for the game that he loved. He was even able to meet his favorite team and get autographs and pictures taken with many of his heroes. Over the years, his passion and obsession continued to grow. Then on his seventeenth birthday he was given a book that forever changed his life. It was a book about scouting. He couldn't put it down. He thought this is what I want to be; I want to be an NFL scout. He began recording college football games off of television and he'd race through his homework to practice writing scouting reports. When the rest of his high school typing class was working on their assignments, he was sitting in the back of the class typing up his scouting reports. He was so hoping his hard work might land him an internship, but nothing happened. Yet, he did not give up. He graduated from high school, but soon after dropped out of a small community college. He went to work for different companies, businesses and industries, but he could not deny football was still in his blood. He finally realized he had to go for it; he just had to give his dream one last chance. So, he put together a plan to do something that had never been done before. But, would it work this time? Find out how he pursued his childhood dream and became part of the NFL in Whatever it Takes.
Winner of the 2008 Premier Book Award for best biography The son of Irish immigrants who grew up along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia at the turn of the twentieth century, Jack Kelly became a three-time gold medal Olympian, a political maverick, and the millionaire father of a princess. In this classic American tale of grit and perseverance, the clash between old world privilege and new world courage is played out on many fronts—including the watery battlefield of rowing, where Kelly first chose to forge his strength of character. Author Daniel J. Boyne follows the life of Kelly as he parlays his athletic prowess to France during WWI and then ventures into Philadelphia politics during the Great Depression. Readers are introduced to other members of the Kelly clan, including Jack’s brothers, Walter and George, who ascend to international acclaim in the world of theater, not to mention his daughter Grace, who seeks to follow in their footsteps against her father’s will, and his son, Jack Kelly Jr., upon whose shoulders is laid the greatest challenge of all—to carry on the Kelly tradition of championship rowing. Featuring more than thirty gorgeous historical photographs, Kelly is an uplifting true story of a real champion’s profound success in sport and life.
Margaret Millington is a wealthy, cynical, midfifties alcoholic, suffering from depression. Peter Kearns is a thirty-one-year-old Catholic priest with a burn-scarred face he mysteriously suffered as a young child. Fate brings the two together, and they develop an unlikely friendship that allows Margaret to witness the hope that the remarkable young man offers to people in a variety of seemingly hopeless situations, ultimately giving Margaret herself a new purpose in life. When the charismatic priest is diagnosed with a terminal illness treatable only by a bone-marrow transplant from a blood relative, his prognosis appears grim. Peter was raised in a series of foster homes in Chicago, and no one knows the identity of his birth family. Did they neglect him as an infant? Worse still, did they burn him intentionally? A determined Margaret puts her vast resources to work to try to find Peters biological family in time to save his life.
“A triumph . . . A moving, beautifully written biography.” —National Review From the beginning, L. Brent Bozell seemed destined for great things. An extraordinary orator, the young man with fiery red hair won a national debate competition in high school and later was elected president of Yale’s storied Political Union, where his debating partner was his close friend William F. Buckley Jr. In less than a decade after graduating from Yale, Bozell helped Buckley launch National Review, became a popular columnist and speaker, and, most famously, wrote Barry Goldwater’s landmark book The Conscience of a Conservative. But after setting his sights on high political office, Bozell took a different route in the 1960s. He abruptly moved his family to Spain; he founded a traditional Catholic magazine, Triumph, that quickly turned radical; he repudiated on religious grounds the U.S. Constitution; he made it his mission to transform America into a Catholic nation; he led the nation’s first major antiabortion protest (featuring a militant group known as the Sons of Thunder); he severed ties with his erstwhile friends from the conservative movement, including Buckley (who was also his brother-in-law). By the mid-1970s, Bozell had fallen prey to bipolar disorder and alcoholism, leading life as if “manacled to a roller coaster.” Biographer Daniel Kelly tells Bozell’s remarkable story vividly and with sensitivity in Living on Fire. To write this book, Kelly interviewed dozens of friends and family members and gained unprecedented access to Bozell’s private correspondence. The result is a richly textured portrait of a gifted, complex man—his triumphs as well as his struggles.

An exploration of the character and evolution of disgust and the role this emotion plays in our social and moral lives. People can be disgusted by the concrete and by the abstract—by an object they find physically repellent or by an ideology or value system they find morally abhorrent. Different things will disgust different people, depending on individual sensibilities or cultural backgrounds. In Yuck!, Daniel Kelly investigates the character and evolution of disgust, with an emphasis on understanding the role this emotion has come to play in our social and moral lives. Disgust has recently been riding a swell of scholarly attention, especially from those in the cognitive sciences and those in the humanities in the midst of the "affective turn." Kelly proposes a cognitive model that can accommodate what we now know about disgust. He offers a new account of the evolution of disgust that builds on the model and argues that expressions of disgust are part of a sophisticated but largely automatic signaling system that humans use to transmit information about what to avoid in the local environment. He shows that many of the puzzling features of moral repugnance tinged with disgust are by-products of the imperfect fit between a cognitive system that evolved to protect against poisons and parasites and the social and moral issues on which it has been brought to bear. Kelly's account of this emotion provides a powerful argument against invoking disgust in the service of moral justification.
They called themselves Seawolves . . . The men of SEALs, PBRs, and SF called them saviors . . . Created in 1967, the HAL-3 helicopter squadron--aka Seawolves--provided quick-reaction close air support to SEALs, PBR River Rats, and Special Forces advisers and their troops. During the five years of the unit's existence, the seven detachments of Seawolves amassed stunning statistics: 78,000 missions, 8,200 enemy kills, 8,700 sampans sunk, and 9,500 structures destroyed. These 200 men collected a total of 17,339 medals. This is the story of one of those men. . . . Taking enemy fire while braced against the rocket pod of a Huey gunship and shooting an M-60 freehand in 110 mph winds was just part of Dan Kelly's job in Vietnam. As a gunner in the all-volunteer Seawolves, he served with distinction until three bullets bought him a trip home. Here is his amazing story of the Seawolves--a harrowing tale of unsung heroism and undaunted courage in combat.
There were no dry runs for Seawolves in Vietnam. They put their lives on the line—every time. In the Viet Cong-infested Mekong Delta, where small SEAL teams were always outgunned and outnumbered, discovery brought swift, deadly consequences— and a radio call for backup from the United States Navy’s very best: the Seawolves. The whir of approaching rotor blades signaled their arrival as they tore through the jungle at treetop level, gunners hanging off the skids, shooting M-60s, raining down their lethal mix of high explosives and incendiary death. Seawolf Dan Kelly describes the origins of this extraordinary outfit. Put through a training program unlike any other, these men emerged to perform unparalleled feats of courage. The stories of these elite warriors capture America’s real heroes in all their guts and glory, and demonstrate why the Seawolves are known as the most successful and most decorated unit in the Vietnam War.
The Lord inspired me to bring Revelation to life in this fashion with the hope of giving readers a better understanding of what is and is to come. This is not a concoction and might be the first and only book that is dramatized this way because of the fear many have concerning what is written in Revelation 22:18""19. The enemy capitalizes on this fear because he is aware that it will prevent man from knowing the truth of the end. He knows that this will allow him to manipulate and deceive the world, and cause more people to join him in the lake of fire. But we need not fear if we are led by the Holy Ghost. So take the time to read this book today and see how God puts the events in sequence so as to reveal the truth of the end through John's eyes. I would love to hear from you. If you have a comment, an encouraging word, or would like to help me bring this gospel to the world, please email me at genrev2212@gmail.com
I believe and I am sure that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God. I know that he is coming back again to receive us unto himself, but he wants you to be a part of his family. So then, if you believe in the Bible... this book is for you, if you believe in Jesus... this book is for you, if you want to be a part of his family... this book is for you, if the call of God is on your life... this book is for you, and if you want eternal life... this book is for you. I pen these words by the leading of the Holy Spirit who dwells within me. I would encourage you to read and determine whether or not this is of God or just vain imagination and I pray that you will be able to understand this mystery. If you wish or you are led to send a review, an encouraging word or a testimony you can send it to e-mail: genrev2212@gmail.com, which is short for: • Genesis 22:12 which states, "And he said, 'Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son thine only son from me.'" (This is an indication of how we are to serve God... wholeheartedly) • Revelation 22:12 which states, "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give everyman according as his work shall be." (And this is the promise of sure reward for such wholehearted service). • At God's mail. Come! (This tells of the message sent from God to the sinful world and the invitation given for man to repent and be a part of his kingdom because the end of all things is at hand). I hope that these words will bless your heart and will cause you to glorify his name. Amen.
Falling Down is a true story of a teenager who went down the wrong path and a family who struggled to keep up. It is meant to serve as proof to those families and children who cannot see a way out of a difficult situation that they are in and that they are not alone. There is reason to keep going and what they are going through is temporary. "I was not allowed to have anything that I could use to hurt myself or use to runaway, which included my shoes. The one thing I remember most was the ridiculous slippers they gave us to wear. Bright yellow foam with big smiley faces on them. As if I didn't feel crazy enough." Daniel Kelly is now a middle school teacher in North Carolina. He also mentors at-risk teens in the hopes that they do not follow the same road he did. A portion of all proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to organizations that provide support to at-risk youth.

Written in an accessible style, this book provides a historically grounded critique of American policing and offers implementable solutions, providing students a comprehensive understanding of modern policing. Contemporary policing is in crisis, a situation that has led to persistent calls to reform it. Unfortunately, many proposed solutions focus on piecemeal changes that ignore a fundamental problem—policing relies on a largely reactive approach that does not in any systematic or comprehensive way focus on crime prevention. Most of what the police do, such as responding to 911 calls for service and employing directed patrols or hot spots policing, fails to address the causes of crime. Compounding this problem is the absence of any institution or agency charged with prioritizing the prevention of crime and for ensuring that police efforts support this goal. A central distinguishing feature of this book is its comprehensive approach and the emphasis on policing as part of a much broader set of changes that must occur both to improve policing and to improve public safety and justice. This approach includes retaining what works, eliminating what does not, drawing on evidence-based policy from around the world, and creating systemic changes that institutionalize better policing, accountability, and evaluation processes for ensuring that the police are effective. The Reinvention of Policing can be used in courses focused on policing policy and practice, specifically when discussing the nature of policing, how policing may reflect and contribute to inequality and injustice, or how it might improve these social problems.

This book critiques the Rawlsian concepts of “justice as fairness” and “public reason” from the perspective of Christian political theory and practice. The Rawlsian paradigm has become pervasive in multiple disciplines outside political philosophy and is unconsciously embedded in a great deal of Christian public discourse; this calls for a new level of analysis from Christian perspectives. This is the first volume to examine Rawls based on Christian principles drawn from theological ethics, social thought, political theory and practical observation. In addition to theoretical perspectives, the book connects its critique of Rawls to specific hot-topic practical questions in three areas: social issues (abortion, marriage, etc.), economic issues (wealth creation, poverty programs, etc.), and the increasing difficulty of political compromise and peaceful coexistence in the context of the culture war. The book includes some of the leading Christian political theorists in America.
This compact history traces the computer industry from its origins in 1950s mainframes, through the establishment of standards beginning in 1965 and the introduction of personal computing in the 1980s. It concludes with the Internet’s explosive growth since 1995. Across these four periods, Martin Campbell-Kelly and Daniel Garcia-Swartz describe the steady trend toward miniaturization and explain its consequences for the bundles of interacting components that make up a computer system. With miniaturization, the price of computation fell and entry into the industry became less costly. Companies supplying different components learned to cooperate even as they competed with other businesses for market share. Simultaneously with miniaturization—and equally consequential—the core of the computer industry shifted from hardware to software and services. Companies that failed to adapt to this trend were left behind. Governments did not turn a blind eye to the activities of entrepreneurs. The U.S. government was the major customer for computers in the early years. Several European governments subsidized private corporations, and Japan fostered R&D in private firms while protecting its domestic market from foreign competition. From Mainframes to Smartphones is international in scope and broad in its purview of this revolutionary industry.
Tracks the evolution of the international cellular industry from the late 1970s to the present. The development of the mobile-phone industry into what we know today required remarkable cooperation between companies, governments, and industrial sectors. Companies developing cellular infrastructure, cellular devices, cellular network services, and eventually software and mobile semiconductors had to cooperate, not simply compete, with each other. In this global history of the mobile-phone industry, Daniel D. Garcia-Swartz and Martin Campbell-Kelly examine its development in the United States, Europe, Japan, and several emerging economies, including China and India. They present the evolution of mobile phones from the perspective of vendors of telephone equipment and network operators, users whose lives have been transformed by mobile phones, and governments that have fostered specific mobile-phone standards. Cellular covers the technical aspects of the cellphone, as well as its social and political impact. Beginning with the 1980s, the authors trace the development of closed (proprietary) and open (available to all) cellular standards, the impact of network effects as cellular adoption increased, major technological changes affecting mobile phone hardware, and the role of national governments in shaping the industry. The authors also consider the changing roles that cellular phones have played in the everyday lives of people around the world and the implications 5G technology may have for the future. Finally, they offer statistics on how quickly the cellular industry grew in different regions of the world and how firms competed in those various markets. Cellular is published in the History of Computing Series. This distinguished series has played a major role in defining scholarship in the history of computing. Hallmarks of the series are its technical detail and interpretation of primary source materials.

This award-winning horror anthology is the “yardstick by which future ghost fiction will be measured”—featuring Tanith Lee, Joyce Carol Oates, and others (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Award-winning anthologist Ellen Datlow—praised by William Gibson as “the genre’s sharpest assembler of strange, dark fictions”—is determined to prove that ghost stories still possess the power to chill modern readers to the marrow. So she reached out to a list of varied and talented authors and invited them to scare the heck out of her. The resulting anthology redefines the ghost story, venturing beyond the accustomed tropes and into horror’s true realm: the unknown. The Dark takes a nuanced and disquieting look at the tormented and unquiet dead; the darkness in us, the living; and the sometimes tenuous boundary between the two. Under the covers of The Dark, you will find a gathering of sixteen unique ghost stories, deftly penned by authors versed in the argot of the damned, including Ramsey Campbell, Jeffrey Ford, Glen Hirshberg, Kelly Link, Sharyn McCrumb, Lucius Shepard, and Gahan Wilson. This is the stuff nightmares are made of. Winner of the International Horror Guild Award for Best Anthology of the Year
