The concept of national character is contentious in the social sciences. It has been strongly rejected in the hereditarian or racist forms in which it was couched by earlier writers. Seen in modern perspective, it poses fundamental problems for social-scientific theory and research: To what extent do conditions of life in a particular society give rise to certain patterns in the personalities of members? To what extent, that is, does the sociocultural system produce distinctive forms of social character, basic personality structure, or modal personality? What are the consequences, if any, of this patterning in personality for stability or change in the social order? Until now, there have been relatively few formal definitions of national character or discussions of the proper scope and limits of this field of study. Inkeles surveys various explicit and implicit definitions of national character, tracing developments through the twentieth century. The term national character can be defined as a way of looking at culture and the culturally patterned behavior of individuals, or as a particular way of examining the coherence of culturally defined values or behavior patterns. Inkeles's approach is to examine the regularity of certain personality patterns among individual members of a society. He asserts that modal personality may be extremely important in determining which new cultural elements are accepted in a particular culture, which institutional forms persist in a society, and changes in the character of such institutions. Inkeles reviews previous studies done on the subject of national character. He canvasses attitudes, values systems, and psychological states of different nations, and seeks to discover a set of values in the complex, regionally diverse, and educationally stratified United States. He concludes that, despite many recent advances in the field, there is much to be done before we have a clear picture of the degree of differentiation in the personality structure of modern nations. National Character will be of great interest to psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, and political theorists.

The history of David’s Jerusalem remains one of the most contentious topics of the ancient world. This study engages with debates about the nature of this location by examining the most recent archaeological data from the site and by exploring the relationship of these remains to claims made about David’s royal center in biblical narrative. Daniel Pioske provides a detailed reconstruction of the landscape and lifeways of early 10th century BCE Jerusalem, connected in biblical tradition to the figure of David. He further explores how late Iron Age (the Book of Samuel-Kings) and late Persian/early Hellenistic (the Book of Chronicles) Hebrew literary cultures remembered David’s Jerusalem within their texts, and how the remains and ruins of this site influenced the memories of those later inhabitants who depicted David’s Jerusalem within the biblical narrative. By drawing on both archaeological data and biblical writings, Pioske calls attention to the breaks and ruptures between a remembered past and a historical one, and invites the reader to understand David’s Jerusalem as more than a physical location, but also as a place of memory.
The process of understanding a text from the narrator's point of view is crucial for the tasks of interpreting and translating the Bible. If the translator's understanding of a narrative from the narrator's point of view is erroneous, then the wholeprocess of translating the message into another language may also fall into error. This poses Bible translators a difficult challenge: 'How can we understand the narrator's point of view of the biblical stories which are culturally, geographically, and historically remote from our own?' Understanding a text from the narrator's point of view must precede the translation process. In this work Hankore presents an argument for the intended utterance of Genesis 28:10-35:15 before proposing in briefhow to translate it. By following this process, Hankore shows that a correct understanding of the concept of the ancient Israelite vow in the framework of a social institution is fundamental to reading and translating Genesis 28:10-35:15, and goes on to show how this same votive framework assists an explanation of the relevance of Genesis 34 to the Jacob story.
Kiyosi Itô's greatest contribution to probability theory may be his introduction of stochastic differential equations to explain the Kolmogorov-Feller theory of Markov processes. Starting with the geometric ideas that guided him, this book gives an account of Itô's program. The modern theory of Markov processes was initiated by A. N. Kolmogorov. However, Kolmogorov's approach was too analytic to reveal the probabilistic foundations on which it rests. In particular, it hides the central role played by the simplest Markov processes: those with independent, identically distributed increments. To remedy this defect, Itô interpreted Kolmogorov's famous forward equation as an equation that describes the integral curve of a vector field on the space of probability measures. Thus, in order to show how Itô's thinking leads to his theory of stochastic integral equations, Stroock begins with an account of integral curves on the space of probability measures and then arrives at stochastic integral equations when he moves to a pathspace setting. In the first half of the book, everything is done in the context of general independent increment processes and without explicit use of Itô's stochastic integral calculus. In the second half, the author provides a systematic development of Itô's theory of stochastic integration: first for Brownian motion and then for continuous martingales. The final chapter presents Stratonovich's variation on Itô's theme and ends with an application to the characterization of the paths on which a diffusion is supported. The book should be accessible to readers who have mastered the essentials of modern probability theory and should provide such readers with a reasonably thorough introduction to continuous-time, stochastic processes.
Daniel Lowery commences this work by suggesting that history is a subjective enterprise—it is controlled by those who record it. The power of the present decides what is counted as history, and how the rest of us are told about the past shapes our view of it and, concomitantly, our outlook for the future. In this sense, then, history fundamentally shapes the future. Few questions are more basic to human existence than Who am I? Where did I come from? What is my place in this world? The earliest chapters of Genesis have oriented hearers and readers for millennia in their attempts to address these concerns. And so, in several respects, Genesis shapes the future. In this study, Lowery sets out to understand more accurately ancient Near Eastern language and claims about origins, specifically claims found in Gen 1–11. He uses Gen 4:17–22 as a test case representing the Hebrew tradition explaining how the world came to be civilized. Lowery observes that this passage serves a function within the larger narrative of Gen 1–11 akin to other ancient Near Eastern traditions of civilized beginnings. Moreover, it occupies a place in the overarching “narrative of beginnings” corresponding to what we find elsewhere throughout the ancient world. Lowery focuses mainly on Mesopotamia, leaving other cultures for later study. This study aims to demonstrate that much of the language of Gen 1–11 is similar in many ways to its Mesopotamian counterparts. More explicitly, here is an exploration of the nature of the language and terms of Gen 1–11 to ascertain what truths it communicates and how it communicates them. At its core, this is a study of the genre and generic claims of protohistory as found in Gen 1–11.
