There are hundreds of records that I have loved over the course of my life. Some of these records have faded into the depths of my subconscious. Fortunately, most of them have stayed with me year after year remaining fresh in my memory, alive in my heart. I compiled my first “Favorites List” in 1983, and it contained about 600 recordings. Most of the records on the original list are still there today. My current list consists of about 900 recordings. And the list is still growing as I continue to be introduced to more music. You may be familiar with Rolling Stone’s 2004 cover story, “The 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time.” This is certainly a comprehensive compendium on the subject, so why should I bother writing this book? Because I’m taking a different approach, a personal approach. There’s a difference between the “greatest songs” as determined by professional music critics, and someone’s “favorite records.” I’m not a music critic or a musicologist. I’m just a guy who loves good music. Nonetheless, I believe my opinions have value because of the strong connection I have with each record. The primary purpose of this book is to draw us together using our favorite music as the catalyst. In the process of getting to know someone, a commonly asked question is: “What kind of music do you like?” His or her answer usually reveals something about their personality. Not only will you learn what my favorite records are, you will learn about me, why I like these songs and how I came to discover them. I’m hoping to create conversations, not only between you and I, but between all American music lovers. Thousands upon thousands of songs have been recorded over the past 60 years. I’ve been an avid listener for most of my life, but there are still a lot of “hidden treasures” out there I’d love to find. I’m hoping you, by sharing your favorites with me, will help me to find them. I’m also hoping that I will inspire you to listen to some of my favorites. There is a treasure trove of great music out waiting to be enjoyed!

A guide to resources for use with K-12 students, this selective volume lists substantial, easily accessible resources on African-American visual artists. In total, 639 resources, referencing 1,174 individual artists are annotated and include works about the artists as well as the contexts in which the artist is situated. The publications are generally contemporary sources (after 1981), but earlier materials do exist, providing a baseline for the study of African-American art and its historical development. An introductory essay documents the successes and struggles of African-Americans in the art world followed by detailed annotations, which are arranged in five sections: General, Survey, Children's Books, Artists, and Artist Groups and Movements. The General, Survey, and Children's Books annotations provide important information including the author name, publication date, title, publisher, and an overview of contents. The Artists and Artist Groups and Movements sections function as indexes to the previous three sections. A final section lists addresses of institutions that hold important African- American art collections.

But the practice of spatial concentration—gathering people and things in specific ways, at specific places, and for specific purposes—has a history in Latin America that reaches back to the conquest. In this paradigm-setting book, Daniel Nemser argues that concentration projects, often tied to urbanization, laid an enduring, material groundwork, or infrastructure, for the emergence and consolidation of new forms of racial identity and theories of race. Infrastructures of Race traces the use of concentration as a technique for colonial governance by examining four case studies from Mexico under Spanish rule: centralized towns, disciplinary institutions, segregated neighborhoods, and general collections. Nemser shows how the colonial state used concentration in its attempts to build a new spatial and social order, and he explains why the technique flourished in the colonies. Although the designs for concentration were sometimes contested and short-lived, Nemser demonstrates that they provided a material foundation for ongoing processes of racialization. This finding, which challenges conventional histories of race and mestizaje (racial mixing), promises to deepen our understanding of the way race emerges from spatial politics and techniques of population management.

In its examination of two of Plato's key works, Soul, World, and Idea: An Interpretation of Plato's Republic and Phaedo reveals the key role that images and our capacity for image-making play in the relationship among soul, world, and Idea. This bookbegins and ends with a reading of the Republic. Daniel Sherman turns midway to the Phaedo to further analyze the nature of the soul and its relation to the nature of the Ideas, then returns to apply the conclusions to the rest of the Republic. Sherman's focus is on the ontological and epistemological argument, including attention to the dramatic detail. He argues that the ontology of the Ideas in the Republic and the Phaedo is inseparable from the ontology of human being, that is, from the structure and life of the soul. On this interpretation, the Ideas are seen as indeed objective but as in a sense also a product of a permanent dialectical relationship. The Ideas, though something more than concepts, do not have any real independent existence outside of this human dialectical triad of world, soul and Idea. The stability of the Ideas need not be grounded in a static otherworldliness, and the condition of meaning is not temporally prior to human existence in general. The result is a new interpretation concerning the realm of the Ideas, the immortality of the soul, and the lived in world of their interaction in the production of interpretive images. Sherman argues that the platonic soul is immortaland the Ideas eternal wholly and solely in human (dialogical) activity--the rest is muthologia--and that the world of our experience is a product of an ongoing act of interpretation or dianoetic dialegesthai. This reinterpretation of the platonic Ideas will be especially interesting to students and scholars of classics, ancient philosophy, and continental philosophy.
