What happens when the intellectual giant of twentieth-century literature, James Joyce, is made an object of consideration and cause of desire by the intellectual giant of modern psychoanalysis, Jacques Lacan? This is what Joyce and Lacan explores, in the three closely interrelated areas of reading, writing, and psychoanalysis, by delving into Joyce’s own relationship with psychoanalysis in his lifetime. The book concentrates primarily on his last text, Finnegans Wake, the notorious difficulty of which arises from its challenging the intellect itself, and our own processes of reading. As well as the centrality of the Wake, concepts of Joycean ontology, sanity, singularity, and sexuality are excavated from sustained analysis of his earliest writings onward. To be ‘post-Joycean’, as Lacan describes it, means then to be in the wake not only of Joyce, but also of Lacan’s interventions on the Irish writer made in the mid-70s. It was this encounter that gave rise to concepts that have gained currency in today’s psychoanalytic theory and practice, and importance in wider critical contexts. The notions of the sinthome, lalangue, and Lacan’s use of topology and knot theory are explored within, as well as new theories being launched. The book will be of interest to psychoanalysts, literary theorists, and students and teachers of literature, theory, or the works of Joyce and Lacan.

This study reconstructs F.W.J. Schelling's philosophy of language based on a detailed reading of §73 of Schelling's lectures on the Philosophy of Art. Daniel Whistler argues that the concept of the symbol present in this lecture course, and elsewhere in Schelling's writings of the period, provides the key for a non-referential conception of language, where what matters is the intensity at which identity is produced. Such a reconstruction leads Whistler to a detailed analysis of Schelling's system of identity, his grand project of the years 1801 to 1805, which has been continually neglected by contemporary scholarship. In particular, Whistler recovers the concepts of quantitative differentiation and construction as central to Schelling's project of the period. This reconstruction also leads to an original reading of the origins of the concept of the symbol in German thought: there is not one 'romantic symbol', but a whole plethora of experiments in theorising symbolism taking place at the turn of the nineteenth century. At stake, then, is Schelling as a philosopher of language, Schelling as a systematiser of identity, and Schelling as a theorist of the symbol.

This book narrates the peripeteia of the young president and his mentor. It depicted the journey of a Buddhist monk who had been a spiritual advisor to a young pop music singer. When she announced her desire to enter the race for the presidential election of the United States, he supported her and used his knowledge to bring her into the White House. Unfortunately, the mentor and his mentee parted ways during her administration of the country following an altercation between a staff member of the White House. The spiritual guru left the United States and led a peripatetic lifestyle before settling in Greenland with the Inuit population. He converted these people to Buddhism and imposed a vegetarian lifestyle while they had been living on meat for generations. The Eskimos suddenly died of malnutrition leaving the guru devastated. He contemplated suicide when the spirit of God spoke to an Iowa pastor to bring him back home. Once back, the young president sent him to Oral Robert University in Tulsa to study Christianity and become a pastor. He later returned to the White House and served as an advisor to the young president. The book closes the debate about Hell and clarifies why Jesus did not and could never go to Hell. It explains why a frantic arms race of nations and excessive war are the primary causes of the world’s unrest. The book is also about the hypocrisy of the political class that struggles to connect the dots between the past deeds of their ancestors and the present moment. They want a big military and a sophisticated highway system but are reluctant to pay for them, hence the title “Have It Both Ways.”.
