Making Music With Samples is packed with creative, hands-on tips - aimed at getting the reader actively enjoying the art of sampling as quickly and easily as possible - interspersed with snippets of essential theoretical stuff: whether it's the science of sound, or copyright legalities. Starting with the absolute basics of what sampling is, author Dan Duffell progresses from simpler, widely-used tools like small loop-based samplers, through the various platforms available to the sample user - the different methods and equipment required to create and manipulate samples, including: hardware samplers, sampling/keyboard workstations, computer setups, software samplers, drum samplers, etc. He then describes the setting up procedures needed to get you started - connections and installation, signal levels and so on - at the same time providing some relevant background information on how a sampler actually works. Next: choosing source material - whether created you, or from sample CDs like the one attached, or from other people's recordings - which inevitably also raises the thorny subject of copyright and licensing: sampling and the law. Then there's a section depicting the basic layout and operation of some well-known software and hardware samplers, and a look at Sampling & Synthesis and Modular Systems...

How to Read Middle English Poetry guides readers through poetry between 1150 and 1500, for study and pleasure. Chapters give down-to-earth advice on enjoying and analyzing each aspect of verse, from the choice of single words, through syntax, metre, rhyme, and stanza-design, up to the play of larger forms across whole poems. How to Read Middle English Poetry covers major figures?such as Chaucer, Langland, the Pearl Poet, and Robert Henryson?but also delves into exciting anonymous lyrics, romances, and drama. It shows, too, how some modern poets have drawn on earlier poems, and how Middle English and early Scots provide crucial standpoints from which to think through present-day writing. Contextual sections discuss how poetry was heard aloud, introduce manuscripts and editing, and lay out Middle English poetry's ties to other tongues, including French, Welsh, and Latin. Critical terms are highlighted and explained both in the main text and in a full indexed glossary, while the uses of key tools such as the Middle English Dictionary are described and modeled. References to accessible editions and electronic resources mean that the book needs no accompanying anthology. At once thorough, wide-ranging, and practical, How to Read Middle English Poetry is indispensable for students exploring Middle English or early Scots, and for anyone curious about the heart of poetry's history.
In 1948, the Australian government banned the production, importation and exhibition of horror films in a move to appease religious communities and entertainment watchdogs. Drawing upon previously unseen government documents, private letters and contemporary newspaper accounts, this book is the first to extensively cover the history of censorship and the early production of horror movies in Australia. Beginning its examination in the late 19th century, the book documents the earliest horror films like Georges Melies' The Haunted Castle (1896), and how Australians enjoyed such films before the ban. The book then explains how certain imports, like 1954's Creature from the Black Lagoon, were able to circumvent the ban while others were not. It also reveals how Australian television, though similarly impacted by government censorship, was occasionally able to broadcast films technically banned from cinematic release. The work concludes with a look at the first Australian horror films produced after the ban was formally lifted in 1969, like Terry Bourke's Night of Fear (1973).
Stylistics is the linguistic study of style in language. It aims to account for how texts project meaning, how readers construct meaning and why readers respond to texts in the way that they do. This book is an introduction to stylistics that locates it firmly within the traditions of linguistics. Organised to reflect the historical development of stylistics from its origins in Russian formalism, the book covers key principles such as foregrounding theory, as well as more recent developments in cognitive stylistics. It includes an examination of both literary and non-literary texts, and substantial coverage of methodologies for stylistic analysis. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on the practicalities of producing stylistic analyses that are objective, replicable and falsifiable. Comprehensive in its coverage and assuming no prior knowledge of the topic, Stylistics will be essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students new to this fascinating area of language study.
Unraveling Environmental Disasters, Second Edition provides scientific explanations of the most threatening current and future environmental disasters, including an analysis of ways disasters could have been prevented and how to minimize risk of similar disasters in the future. In this new edition the authors provide foundational knowledge on why certain environmental disasters occur and ways of reducing the risk of recurrences. Anyone involved in teaching or working in the main sciences of physics, chemistry, and biology, or in the applied sciences, including engineering, design, planning, and homeland security, should read the book to become acquainted with these very important issues. Evaluates natural hazards and disasters with an emphasis on lessons learned for better future forecasting Considers the impact of human systems on environmental disasters, treating disasters as complex systems Provides detailed predictions, based upon sound science, on why disasters occur Includes fully updated chapters on food, health, and water Focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects of each disaster Includes disasters related to climate change and pollution
