Trois cent cinquante millions de porteurs chroniques dans le monde, environ un million de décès chaque année, un vaccin efficace mais décrié en France, des traitements de plus en plus performants mais inaccessibles dans les régions les plus touchées par l’endémie... Près d’un demi-siècle après la découverte du virus de l'hépatite B, les défis posés par l'infection restent considérables. L'estimation récente de l'Institut de veille sanitaire a montré que la prévalence de l'infection par le virus de l'hépatite B était voisine de celle de l'infection par le virus de l'hépatite C en France. Les populations migrantes et les couches les plus défavorisées de la société sont les plus touchées. Le développement récent de molécules antivirales puissantes possédant une barrière génétique élevée contre la résistance permet en théorie de contrôler la très grande majorité des hépatites chroniques B.
