In 1948, the Australian government banned the production, importation and exhibition of horror films in a move to appease religious communities and entertainment watchdogs. Drawing upon previously unseen government documents, private letters and contemporary newspaper accounts, this book is the first to extensively cover the history of censorship and the early production of horror movies in Australia. Beginning its examination in the late 19th century, the book documents the earliest horror films like Georges Melies' The Haunted Castle (1896), and how Australians enjoyed such films before the ban. The book then explains how certain imports, like 1954's Creature from the Black Lagoon, were able to circumvent the ban while others were not. It also reveals how Australian television, though similarly impacted by government censorship, was occasionally able to broadcast films technically banned from cinematic release. The work concludes with a look at the first Australian horror films produced after the ban was formally lifted in 1969, like Terry Bourke's Night of Fear (1973).

SoCal’s plan is to displace the Hope sisters and their community, clear-cut their forest, and build California’s first geothermal bedroom community. All Karen and Nellie have going for them is good intentions, a loyal staff, and Nqong, an Australian aborigine sage who has lived like a hermit in the Matilija mountains most of his life, tending to the healing waters and caring for a yearly swarm of exotic yellow beetles, who might just save the day.

Our Constitution contains a great deal of language that is vague, broad, or ambiguous, making its meaning uncertain. Many people believe this uncertainty allows judges too much discretion. They suggest that constitutional adjudication is just politics in disguise, and that judges are legislators in robes who read the Constitution in accordance with their own political views. Some think that political decision making by judges is inevitable, and others think it can be restrained by "strict constructionist" theories like textualism or originalism. But at bottom, both sorts of thinkers believe that judging has to be either tightly constrained and inflexible or purely political and unfettered: There is, they argue, no middle ground.Farber and Sherry disagree, and in this book they describe and defend that middle ground. Fazio examines the significance of the US-Australian Korean engagement, 1947–53, in the evolution of the relationship between the two nations in the formative years of the Cold War. In the aftermath of World War Two, divergent American and Australian strategic and security interests converged and then aligned on the Korean peninsula. Fazio argues that the interactions between key US and Australian officials throughout their Korean engagement were crucial to shaping the nature of the evolving relationship and the making of the alliance between the two nations. The diplomacy of Percy Spender, John Foster Dulles, and James Plimsoll was particularly crucial. He demonstrates that the American evaluation of the geo-strategic significance of Korea was a significant factor in the making of the ANZUS alliance and events in Korea remained central to the evolving US-Australian relationship. Their Korean engagement showed the US and Australia had similar and overlapping, rather than identical interests, and that their relationship was much more nuanced and problematic than commonly perceived. Fazio challenges the Australian mythology on the origins of the ANZUS Treaty and presents a cautionary insight into the limits of Australia’s capacity to influence US policy to benefit its interests. An insightful read for diplomatic historians, providing greater depth to understanding the broader historical context of the trajectory of the US-Australian relationship and alliance since the beginning of the Cold War.

Lethal Dose of Salvation is about Oscar Ireland, a cathedral groundskeeper, who, while in church praying, is shot in the head. By the time his wife arrives at the hospital, she is horrified to discover that the love of her life is in a coma. Within his comatose state, Oscar awakens in a garden. Up ahead he sees one of the many mansions in heaven. Befuddled, confused, he enters the seven-story building. After mingling on the first floor with the regular dead, he meets Daniel, his guardian angel. Oscar decides to move onward and upward to the second floor that houses the Prayer Chamber. Soon he moves up to the third floor where the members of the Historical Committee conduct their business. Since he is not yet physically dead, those he encounters cannot see him, which adds to his frustration. On the fourth floor is the Artistic Committee; fifth floor, Biblical Committee. Thanks to his guardian angel and the information he acquires from visiting the various offices, he discovers he is in the building where the committee members must decide who among the living are worthy of receiving inspiration. The sixth floor contains the Administration Committee. They correlate all the information gathered from the floors below. Enclosed on the seventh floor are the sacred offices of the Holy Trinity. While his soul is pulling him upward to see God, his heart tries to keep him tethered to his grieving wife back on earth. Oscar's personal struggle is between the promise of wisdom and the power of love. It is a realistic look at an inconceivable concept: how inspiration is transmitted from God to man, and one man's quest to see God while still alive. Mystical and surreal, yet it never loses its human perspective. Perhaps the most dramatic aspect of salvation is the unbreakable bond between a man and a woman.
