Two distinctive views emerge concerning the presumed battle between Lodge's creative and critical work. One holds that Lodge’s fiction is antimodernist and therefore lags behind his criticism, which displays a theoretical interest in the modernist and – though to a lesser extent – in the postmodernist text. According to the opposite view, time and again there have been strong elements of modernism and postmodernism in Lodge’s novels. In order to bring together the two lines of Lodge’s work, this study shall focus on some aspects in his fiction that are also discussed in his criticism. Given this interdependence, his declared interest in what he calls the ‘art-and-reality novel’ can be regarded as a major starting-point. The emphasis falls on various forms of interplay in the fields of literature, criticism and reality. Accordingly, it should be possible to apply Lodge the theorist to Lodge the novelist and thus bridge or at least explain the alleged division in his work.

Several important breakthroughs in trans port physiology have arisen from microelectrode studies. Undoubtedly, there is a progressively wide-spread use of conventional and ion-selective microelectrodes. Due to their particular dimension and properties micro electrodes are exclusive ly applied to measurements on living matter. This must have many consequences to my thoughts on experiments with microelectrodes. In this book, my concern is fo cussing on the description of an intracellular method that should lead to reliable in formation on cellular parameters. The methodical basis for any meaningful applica tion is treated extensively. However, technical perfection and accurate results are not the only concern when working on animals and human beings. Rather, my thoughts are governed by the intellectual and moral mastery of the experimental ap proach on living subjects. A measurement with microelectrodes usually necessitates the sacrifice of an ani mal. This is an immense fact, and means that the knowledge gained by the experi ment must justify the death of a living subject.

The book considers the lot-sizing and scheduling problem for flexible flow line production facilities. Flexible flow lines are flow lines with parallel machines on some or all production stages. They can be found in a vast number of industries. A three-phased solution approach is presented that solves the integrated lot-sizing and scheduling problem in a hierarchical manner. The approach is able to handle several important features relevant in industrial practice, such as back-orders and setup carry-over. The developed solution procedures solve practically sized problems in a relatively short amount of time. One of the procedures is based on a novel mixed integer programming (MIP) model, which employs integer variables instead of binary variables. This makes it possible to find (near-)optimal solutions using standard algorithms such as CPLEX. Another procedure uses two nested Genetic Algorithms. An application of the framework in the semiconductor industry is given.
