Bramwell, "the pride of West Virginia's southern tip," sprang up almost overnight as a result of the 1800s coal-mining boom. It boasted more millionaires per capita than any other town in this country. These vintage photographs tell of devastation by the 1890 flood and the 1910 fire. In 1957, a warm January caused the Bluestone River to cover Main Street and limited transportation to rowboats. Herein, stories unfold of the early days when coal was king and cash flowed as freely as the river. A few old-timers remember watching the bank janitor as he pushed a cart full of money down Main Street to the train station every week. The bank financed Washington's Burning Tree Country Club and the University Women's Club. By the start of World War II, Bramwell's "millionaires" were the students attending Bramwell School. This volume includes photo memories showing how the school and community were joined at heart.
Tulips and coffee are defining cultural products of the Ottoman eighteenth century, along with their related institutions of palace and coffeehouse. These cultural products hold multiple meanings in the history and historiography of the period. For example, scholars argue that the janissary coffee house was used variously for such diverse means as headquarters for rebellion, a Sufi lodge, police station and racketeering office. 'Ottoman Tulips, Ottoman Coffee' offers a critical exploration of a range of definitive cultural phenomena of the Ottoman 18th century, including the coffee house, print culture, imperial architecture, royal pageantry and festivals. Chapters explore previously untouched subjects such as the changing forms of imperial ritual in Ottoman public circumcision celebrations as well as unravelling the historiography of the so-called 'Tulip Period'. This has traditionally been characterised by the construction and eventual destruction of the famed palace of Saadabad and the reputedly failed project of the first Ottoman printing press. The book reassesses these failures as reflective of the general ill-preparedness of the Ottoman public for enlightened reform. Most importantly this book rejects the prevailing view that the 18th century was in political and cultural decline, and argues in fact it was a period of cultural dynamism and change. 'Ottoman Tulips' breaks free of the twin teleologies of Ottoman decline and Western-induced change, reassessing the impact of Westernization and modernization in the 18th century and revealing comparisons and interactions between the Ottoman court and its Safavid counterpart.

The concepts of psychological literacy and the psychologically literate citizen promise to invigorate a new global approach to psychology education. They pose a basic question: What attributes and capabilities should undergraduate psychology majors acquire? Many psychological organizations have defined psychological literacy by guidelines and lists of student learning outcomes, but although psychology educators across the globe have been working towards helping students to acquire these attributes over the past 50 years, educators have only recently explicitly delineated attributes and learning outcomes, and sought to develop appropriate learning, teaching, and assessment strategies, including whole program approaches. The contributors to this volume argue that psychological literacy is the most important outcome of an undergraduate psychology education and that psychologically literate citizens use their knowledge of psychology to problem-solve in ethical and socially responsible ways that directly benefit their communities. The commonly held view that the interests of American business dominated U.S. foreign policy in the Caribbean during the early part of this century is challenged by Dana G. The fertile farmlands of the Mohawk Valley brought the first settlers to Whitestown, founded by Hugh White in 1784. Abundant water was available to service mills and to provide a means for shipping goods from the existing knitting mills, cheese factories, iron works, and lumberyards of Whitesboro, a village of Whitestown. Irish immigrants settled into Whitesboro after building the Erie Canal, while German immigrants brought their carpenter talents to build furniture, such as the famous Quigley rolltop desk. The Dutch sought out Wybo E. Wind, the Dutch baker who employed many in his bakery, and because of the large number of Welsh immigrants in Remsen, there was a big spillover into Whitesboro. Among the first things sought by those visiting the area is Whitesboro's diverse cuisine, boasting some of the best Italian, Greek, and Lebanese dishes, all brought by immigrants. Whiteboro's proximity to the Adirondacks allows residents to enjoy camps, summer homes, swimming, and winter activities. Why is it so difficult to provide quality mental health care for multicultural populations? How can quality care be achieved?
