In John’s gospel, he describes the Feasts of the Lord in a subtle yet profound way. His gospel account reveals that Jesus taught the meanings of the Old Testament feasts as they were being celebrated. By this, we can see that John’s gospel is written in chronological order. John also wove the theme of the Jewish wedding into his gospel to reveal that it is part of the meaning of the feasts. When we learn more about these revelations from John’s gospel, the rest of the New Testament is easier to understand because the Feasts of the Lord affect us both personally and prophetically. Jesus literally fulfilled the first four feasts – Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits and Pentecost – over two thousand years ago. We can be assured that He will fulfill the remaining three feasts of Trumpets, Atonement and Tabernacles when He returns.

The present monograph is intended to provide a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the optimization of elliptic systems. This area of mathematical research, which has many important applications in science and technology. has experienced an impressive development during the past two decades. There are already many good textbooks dealing with various aspects of optimal design problems. In this regard, we refer to the works of Pironneau [1984], Haslinger and Neittaanmaki [1988], [1996], Sokolowski and Zolksio [1992], Litvinov [2000], Allaire [2001], Mohammadi and Pironneau [2001], Delfour and Zolksio [2001], and Makinen and Haslinger [2003]. Already Lions [I9681 devoted a major part of his classical monograph on the optimal control of partial differential equations to the optimization of elliptic systems. Let us also mention that even the very first known problem of the calculus of variations, the brachistochrone studied by Bernoulli back in 1696. is in fact a shape optimization problem. The natural richness of this mathematical research subject, as well as the extremely large field of possible applications, has created the unusual situation that although many important results and methods have already been est- lished, there are still pressing unsolved questions. In this monograph, we aim to address some of these open problems; as a consequence, there is only a minor overlap with the textbooks already existing in the field.

The economics of voting is about whether and to what extent self-interest may be relied upon in voting. The central proposition in economics is that the world’s work gets done satisfactorily when each person does what they think is best for themselves. The commonsense view of the matter is that this outcome alone would be chaos. This book examines voting in four key terms: self-interest, bargaining, duty and rights. Self-interest creates a voting equilibrium on various issues, notably the redistribution of income. Bargaining has a larger role to play in voting than in commerce, as it becomes essential in the formation of platforms of political parties and for the passage of laws. A duty to vote arises from the fact that a person’s vote has only an infinitesimal chance of influencing the outcome of an election. Rights are a democracy’s first line of defense against exploitation that, unless constrained, the majority rule voting enables voters to expropriate the corresponding minority, undermining democracy completely. Four key questions are asked in this book. When is there self-interest in majority rule voting comparable to the general interest in markets? To what extent does ‘government by majority rule voting’ depend upon bargaining as well as voting? Can willingness to vote be attributed to self-interest or is a sense of duty required? Does democracy require property rights? Through an examination of these terms, this book argues that they are indispensable requirements for the maintenance of government by majority rule voting. This book is essential for those who study political economy, economic theory and philosophy as well as political theory.

Continuing unrest among the southern states has emboldened slaves to flee north with bounty hunters in pursuit, and life in Somerset is about to change. Paddy O'Toole is the owner and driver of a stage coach that makes shuttle runs along the Chicago Road between the towns of Jonesville and Clinton. Paddy's favorite stop is the Somerset Inn where Shella Heflin, its famous cook, works with young Mary Bunday in the kitchen. Ransom Foster, Paddy's dear friend and frequent passenger, is extremely fond of Mary Bunday. Whenever Ransom is on the stage, Paddy times his arrival at the Somerset Inn for just before dark so the young lovers can be together. Paddy, the optimist, loves everyone dearly and is always willing to help. At home in Jonesville, he spends most of his spare time with his friend Chauncy Coolahan, the town's only undertaker.
